I am not at all sold on E Staal being better than Nash.

I don't see it either. I actually think Nash is the better player. Maybe a few years ago this was true, but E.Staal has not looked good this year, even compare to Nash who has been the ire of this fanbase this year.

Staal is every bit the whipping boy on the Canes board that Nash is here. Someone even said he's going to be a casual fan only as long as he's captain.

Staal is just a down right power center...kinda like toews...i would give some young kids for him in a heart beat..
Nash-Staal-MSL
Poo-Stepan-Kreider
Hags-Brass-Zucc
4th line

And Richards gets bought out...all will be good

With Hall throwing a hissy fit, could he be the target for a trade?

He would garner quite a hefty return, but I think he's perfect for this team. A bigger, more skilled replacement for Callahan.

Imagine having him and Kreider flanking the LWs for the next decade.

Match-Up Nightmare.

Hall threw a hissy fit? I missed that. Link?

But, Oilers aren't going to trade Hall. And even if they did, Kreider would 100% be going the other way.

I just saw it. He didn't throw the bottle at Eakins, he threw it on the ground out of frustration.

Nash for E. Staal would be a straight up trade, not an asset filled move.

Regardless, no way Nash waives his NMC.

I'd love to do this though. Staal is easily the better player. Regardless of the consistency issues.

How does that address Carolina's payroll concerns? They're contracts are nearly identical.

He does seem to fit the current stategy, but unlike the last 2 guys that threw a hissy fit, Hall hasn't demanded a trade to the Rangers yet.

Every time i see E. Staal it makes me think of Dark Helmet:

Not sure if i am ready for that on a regular basis, haha

Speculation: Eric staal's future hanging in the balance with Carolina

http://snyrangersblog.com/2013-14/2013-14-players/marc-staal/marc-staal-future/buzz-carolinas-decisions-to-make-this-summer-and-what-that-could-mean-for-marc-and-eric-staal/

Brooks basically saying it makes more sense for Eric to join Marc here in NYR rather then Marc going to Carolina due to salary cuts coming this summer...

Kreider-Staal-Nash would be awesome... Better than Stastny that's for sure

That line is humongous big

Acquiring E. Staal would be a prototypical Sather move for sure. I wouldn't trade Stepan. I would trade Miller to make it happen, but we need to send some salary the other way, even with a Richards buyout cap space will be tight.

I'd go Brassard, Hagelin, and Fast for E. Staal. Nash or MSL has to move to the left side to make it work. A lineup of

Nash-Stepan-MSL
Pouliot-Staal-Zuccarello
Kreider-Miller-Kristo
Boyle-Moore-Carcillo

with our defense, is a contender. The only complaint I would have with that lineup is losing Hagelin and thrusting Pouliot into a top 6 role, but I suppose that all-American line could be our 2nd line most nights if they play well enough.

*DISCLAIMER* I wouldn't trade that much for Staal and his cap hit, just saying that's what it would take to make a deal.

Unless Carolina is buying him out I wouldn't touch E Staal with a ten foot pole. He's got a ridiculous cap hit of 8.25 million.

I don't want Eric Staal here at his current cap hit. 8.25 per year for a guy who has showed signs of slowing down this season. So yeah, there's the possibility Sather is gonna do something.

Use Henrik to woo Christian Folin -UFA that will be BIG

Henrik we need your help! Tell Christian Folin to join our team. Talk to him about Sweden & going for gold!
We could really use U of Mass (Lowell) free-agent defenceman Christian Folin, but 15 to 20 NHL teams could be lining up for the tough-nosed Swedish sophomore who’s acknowledged to be the flavour of the day on the list of available college players.

Folin is 6’3″ and 210 pounds and has a big shot and lots of sandpaper to his two-way game for Lowell. Lowell will likely be in the NCAA Final 16 tournament, and then Folin, 23, whose dad Martin played pro soccer, will work through all of his NHL offers.

He would be a great pick up. :handclap:

Larry Brooks and Darren Dreger have reported the Canes are looking to cut the payroll. The floor will be $52M-$53M. Jim Rutherford will retire or move upstairs with Ron Francis replacing him if ownership OK's it. Cam Ward and his contract are available if another team is interested. Ward is owed $6.7M and $6.8M in the next 2 years. That team has made once since 2006. That was in 2009. Five straight years of no playoffs. Carolina has $49M(cap) committed for next season. Eric Staal makes $9.25M and $9.5M in the next 2 years. $1.65M increase for Skinner. Faulk is a group II with no arg rights.

6 years/$36M for Staal. NMC in the first 3 years. Limited NTC in last 3 years. Staal gives the Rangers a list of teams they can't trade him to. 6 teams. The Rangers agree to make the NMC effective immediately.

$8M annual salaries in the first 3 years. $4M in the last 3 years. The Rangers pay $24M of the $36M in the first 3 years. Dan Girardi has $20M of the $33M in the first 3 years.

Hearing Ward to Winnipeg this summer.

I don't see how you can realistically add Staal while still keeping Nash. Too much money tied up in too few players. If Staal comes in, Nash has to go one way or another.

Also, I don't envision Nash and Staal being very effective on the same line. They're both shooters. MSL and Staal would be a no brainer, IMO.

You could make it work capwise

If they buyout Staal we could give him 7 million a year.

Hagelin-Staal(7)-MSL
Kreider(2.5)-Stepan-Nash
Brassard(3.7)-JTM-Zucc(3.5)
Carcillo(1.2)-Moore(1.3)/OL-Fast/Dorsett

McD-G
Staal-Diaz(1.5)
Moore(1.3)-Klein

1.08 in Cap space

Do the Canes realistically have the money for that? Serious question as I have no clue.

I got a feeling from reading that article that they would use their compliance buyout on him. I could just be interpreting it wrong

0% chance they use a compliance buy out on him. To think so is ludicrous.

Why wouldn't they buy him out? I can't see any team taking on that 8.25 mil cap hit.

I guess you can say that we traded for Rick Nash and his 7.8 mil cap hit, but I don't think the Blue Jackets had a compliance buyout to use on him.

Seriously?

1) He still has tremendous value
2) They are trying to save money, paying him X millions of dollars up front for walking away is the exact opposite of that

The Blue Jackets would have used a compliance buyout on Nash? They didn't even want to trade him, on top of the fact that there were many teams that wanted him, at that cap hit...
