My gut says Callahan resigns before the deadline, but maybe they are waiting for Vanek to be dealt so teams move towards Callahan as a plan B.

I don't get people saying that they want to move Callahan so they don't lose him for nothing, then want to acquire Cammalleri. That makes no sense. Cam is a better scorer, but Callahan is a more complete player who is the captain who would most likely have a bigger impact on this team in the playoffs.

Also, how are you guys complaining about Sather right now? Wait until after the deadline, because no one has any clue what's going on behind closed doors.

Yeah I'd rather Sather take his time and make the right trade or whatever then jump the gun just because forum members want something to happen

If it means not signing Cally to a ridiculous deal then yes I agree as well. Problem is well all continue to speculate on extension for another four months and I don't think the board can handle that. Lol

What I'm more worried about is Sather having another four months to consider a deal. With our luck, he'll see the free agency landscape change and/or reconsider his stance and he'll be back at the table trying to get something done.

Yes please. Give up more if needed, even. Kristo, McI, etc.

I don't think that works cap-wise.

I think we'd have like 7 coming off and 14 going on.

We'd have to move another contract. Next year, fine, we buy out Richards and don't sign Callahan.

Move Callahan this year and we should fit.

“@DarrenDreger: As @NYP_Brooksie first reported, Rangers told this aft Kesler would not waive his ntc to rejoin Vigneault. No offer, but interest from NYR.â€

Hahaha that's what I and a bunch of others thought until an earlier Tweet saying Philly, Pitt, and NYR were in.

Can someone dig up who tweeted that so we know who just lost credibility.

Don't know if it was BRB or BRF that said it was a tactic to get the price up. Looks like you were spot on.

No to Eric Staal. The man's cap hit out-grosses several small nations.

It's not like a contract is a one sheet. There's insurance, and other details to worry about, and it takes time to read and weed through all the details.

My guess is that the final offer has been made, and it's just language at this point, or the final offer was made, and rejected, and the Rangers are in the midst of shopping him.

I refreshed the page twice and got 503 errors. Refreshed again and was disappointed to find out that no trades had happened.

I wonder if Carolina will trade Eric Staal. Face of their franchise. Humangous beeg cap hit.

If so, we need to be on that.

8:17 and callahan is still here

Not that I think Cally has no chance of resigning, but the deadline implied Sather would focus on trading him. As in find the best offer. The deadline didn't mean he would either sign on the line or promptly be traded instantly.

Also, does that "talk about the rumor not the source" rule have a brooks exemption? Clearly he rubs people the wrong way, but the guy knows more about the sport and organization than nearly everyone here. He obviously has legit sources. The constant whining about a guy that actually covers hockey is getting old.

Besides playing on the left I don't know how Cammalleri helps us out. If we want to have a generic hockey player I'm not sure he's better than Fast and Miller anymore. Big minutes and power play time for a guy whose stats are bad. Minus 24. If we want someone who fits in the team and does a few things other guys don't do, ask Buffalo what kinds of picks they want for Stewart.

Trading Callahan for futures and being a buyer in the offseason seems like the only rational course of action for me unless something really interesting comes up (not Mike Cammalleri) but Rongos.

The Rangers should do nothing. They shouldn't trade Callahan, they shouldn't talk to Callahan's agent until after the season. They shouldn't trade anybody unless it REALLY improves the team. They should just do nothing.

I know the "Why can't we make any trades" crowd will be upset but I don't care.

After the season, Callahan will have his best chance to collect the money he wants as a UFA. Rangers have no leverage then..

We lose Callahan for nothing? That's a plan? Make trade that doesn't improve the team??? Who's advocating that?

They're not contenders that's for sure.... so there they stand once again

just making/missing postseason...

“the price is still too high in the moment but this is a negotiation that seems to be changing by the hour. There is going to be on-going dialogue between the Rangers and Stephen Bartlett who represents Ryan Callahan but the Rangers are still open to pretty much every single option. Could they negotiate an extension and keep him as captain of the Rangers, yes they can do that. Could they find a suitable trade partner and trade him by the trade deadline, yes they could do that. As I said, there is nothing imminent on that front and they will pursue every option available. (Darren Dreger)

They could also agree to a deal in principle, then go through the language over the next few days or weeks. I just think that IF they do come to an agreement, then this is the most likely time for it it to happen. Sather has the trade card to play, and if the deadline goes by then what is Callahan's incentive to sign prior to hitting UFA. Of course the Rangers could just hang onto him even if he doesn't have a deal like others have mentioned and just let the playoffs play out.

Been a tactic for almost two decades

How about more skill? Since, you know, this team couldn't score in a whorehouse.

Nah, let's just get lumbering gorillas and put skates on them. Becuz SIZE!!

well it looks like one Hemsky jersey will be sold....

8.25 is absolutely common for a person of his level. What would you want to pay a #1?

It also brings him until he's 31. It was actually a fantastic deal with no recapture.

I don't think theer would be any issue retaining him as well, considering we'd own all of his brothers.

I understand not wanting Kesler and Spezza, but Eric Staal is in his prime on a completely fair contract that doesn't last for a decade and could possibly be had.

Staal
Staal
Richards
Moore

For this year would make us insta-contenders. And in future years if we get a good 3C or develop Miller, or retain one of Steps/Brassard.

Really doesn't make sense to me how you think this cap hit is bad.
