The Rangers have Casino Night tonight. Making a trade on the day on the charity event would send a bad vibe. Its been very quiet. Outside of the Ryan Miller and Steve Ott deal to St.Louis, there was has been nothing. Usually there would have been some movement the weekend before the deadline. Rangers management will be there and so will Callahan. The problem is the cap is going up and there are no players in free agency. Callahan and Bartlett made the concession before the Olympic break. If you look at Buffalo,Tim Murray is going to totally break that team down. They traded Miller. That's a 5 year rebuilding plan. Does Callahan want to be part of that? The Rangers aren't winning the Cup but they will be a competitive team. The Rangers will make the safe move and re-sign a popular home grown player.

I don't know which is worse: that Sather is willing to give him the 6 year deal at $6 million per, or that Cally still refused it?

Wonder how much say Gorton has in these talks, we all think he will be the one running the show once Sather is gone right? He is the one that has to live with the end of these contracts, not Sather.

How many years does he have left really running the team before he takes another title and just gets to collect a check? 71 in September.

Getting St. Louis doesn't make sense unless we unload Cally's contract.
If we retain Cally, I think MSL's dream of being a Ranger for anything short of a gross discount is unobtainable.
I think MSL is the move for the future and Cally is the move for the now. Sather seems to lack the future foresight needed.
MSL offers flexibility needed for future decisions. Cally extended cripples this team moving forward. Disappointing.

Agree with almost all that Rust, though again (Im somehow in the position of speaking favorably on Sather's behalf), I think the GM has this one read right; and I think Callahan's fate has been decided.

My guess is the NYR are already looking for secondary scoring help, which is why the spate of Moulson & Hemsky rumors.

But my guess is Cally's agent is setting the floor for when he becomes a FA with this latest revision to his request.
The Cally camp will be able to say we would accept $6.5 per, but only as a hometown discount. We still want closer to $7m for 7 years; meaning if you want Callahan on your team next year, be ready to commit around $45m, minimum.

And, mearly speculating here, I wonder what part Pat LaFontaine's resignation could play in all this; it could well have been his brainstorm to target Cally as a FA. It certainly wasnt the GM, who is newly named. With PL stepping down, Im not sure where that leaves Barnett and Callahan, and maybe neither do they.

The only Cup we've seen was because an abrasive coach who didn't mince words gave a rats ass about popularity.

Patrick? Turcotte? Gartner? Amonte?

All popular. All soft. All gone.

The Rangers are not winning a Cup with the players they developed. They might win a Cup elsewhere, but not here.

24 years since Sather built a team that reached the SCF.

You'll see. Half of Bostons or Chicago's current roster will be Rangers in 10 years.

Stan Bowman isn't looking to make a major move. Kevin Hayes isn't signed. The Hawks #1 pick in 2010. 24th overall. If the Hawks don't sign him by August, they get #54 in the 2015 draft. Will Bowman move him? Chris Dilks is a college hockey blogger. He ranked Hayes as the #1 prospect in college hockey.

1. Kevin Hayes, Forward, Boston College (Chicago Blackhawks)

His linemate Johnny Gaudreau gets more headlines, but Hayes' 6-foot-2, 200-plus pound frame allows him to play a power forward game. It's something coach Jerry York is trying to get him to do more of, and when he's at his best, he looks a lot like a David Backes.

The acquiring team could sign Hayes or just be interested in getting the 2nd round pick in 2015.

Hayes has the necessary size to play in the NHL. The Rangers need size and strength.

Brady Skjei is ranked #16.

On 98.7 ESPN Radio last night, Dave Maloney said that the Rangers were “exposed†this weekend in back to back games against physical teams.

Maloney said that there are questions up front with the Rangers size and whether they are big enough down the middle.

On the post game show with Linda Cohn, Maloney was asked if it’s concerning how the Rangers play when matched up against a physical team, “It will be a concern come playoff time. You can bluff your way through with possession. Maybe bluff isn’t the right word….. the Red Wings have been a team that Alain Vigneault looks at says “listen, if we can have the puck, be hard on the puck and be willing to engage, we will be fine. That said, it’s back to back nights where they seem a little deficient with the physicality.â€

Dave Maloney is preaching to the choir on this topic.

My guess is 99. I think he came a lot closer to being named coach than many realize.

But that's just me, guessin'... haha...

I certainly don't want to hear how "I always wanted to stay here; there's no place else I'd want to play" after he nickel and dimes us up to 6.2M from our already ridiculous 6x6 offer.

So what it all comes down to is the 'C' on Callahan's jersey. Right? What he's asking right now is: "Do you want me to be the face of your franchise?" Because we are not paying those kind of numbers for his skill or his potential.

To put some perspective on things. Dustin Brown signed a 8y/5,9m extension this summer. Gabriel Landeskog signed a 7y/5.6m extension.

IF Cally gets signed, I'm guessing it's gonna be something like those deals.

Let him pull a Cano and go rot in Buffalo. I hate how this is dragging on, got a really bad feeling about this whole thing. I'd rather let him walk than have him at 6.25X6. Even 5.5X6.
