Sure, his value increased... from Max Domi's. It just hasn't increased as much as you think. As you stated he was 1 year removed from a 27 goals season; yet, other team's fans will point out he hasn't scored 20 goals since. Listen, I know his value increased because he was coming from an injury and 1 goal in 20 so games, but I think you need to find a middle ground to your expectations. Best is to keep Anderson, because his value is not at its highest. Anderson needs to put up 25 goals seasons on a regular basis to have the value you want him to have.
Trading Domi for Anderson was a huge, huge gamble at the time. The Habs not only didn't know what it was gaining in the transaction (an awful injury plagued season followed by a surgery from which some players never came back the same), but the player they were trading away could also return to his former production. And Anderson would only agree to a long term contract on top of that, it took balls to do that trade for both teams.

His value at that point in time cannot be used to evaluate his actual value. There are still question marks for his health in the future, but they are nothing compared to what they were at that time.

As it's been pointed out, Anderson was younger, had 27 goal a year potential he hasn't matched. Domi's value was higher when they traded for him too, not far removed from 13thOV, amassed an impressive 70+ points the season before, other team's fans on the main board critisized heavily the trade and screamed at the risky contract. The contract is still risky but I get your point that he proved it wasn't a fluke.

Both Domi and Anderson had 1st rounder value at the time of the trade. Anderson's is still around the same.

They just never happen during the finals. The NHL doesn't like it as they want the focus to be entirely on the cup finals.

Teams are also still evaluating everything and whether we like it or not, who wins the cup does influence decision making as far as what did they have that we didn't, etc.

You've got the NHL draft coming up in a couple weeks where they will all be in the same location, it's more likely to increase the pace of discussions and decisions.

I can't think of one major trade that happened during a cup final or a play-offs run.

We desperately need a top-2 RD that can run a PP. That should be top of the list for players we acquire.

I really think a Dvorak for Lundkvist trade should be considered. A bit on the small side, but I think we can work with it considering the other players we have. Rangers have a surplus of RD prospects and a clear need for a C like Dvorak.

I'm fine not having one this year

Unless we get a top 15 (preferably top 10) pick for Anderson with no retention or bad contracts coming back, I would rather just keep him. Like Lehkonen, Anderson’s value comes from more than just goals and assists, and GMs know this.

Lehkonen was traded with minutes to spare. HuGo would have just kept him. I see the same situation for Anderson. He’s just as likely to be traded as he is to be part of our opening line-up, and I am cool with either scenario. Anderson is good for Suzuki and Caufield. That shouldn’t be understated.

Miles Wood intrigues me and always has, he’s best suited for a system that emphasizes speed & less structure … MSL hockey.

Could be a buy low moment.

...not that I don't like the player, but how many Anderson's do we need on the team??...if we can dump Gallagher (who I love as a fan but realize his contract is an Albatross), sure, but that isn't happening without painful retention, so...

I don’t get the Anderson comparison. Wood had a career high of 32 pts / 19G some 4-years ago, coming off $2.75M contract is RFA and only played a handful of games this past season.

Not sure NJD qualify him to be honest.

...just meant that they play the same sort of heavy North-South game and both have been known to go through periods of a stonehands issue on occasion...

Terry Ruskowski was one of the ultimate cement hands and managed to pot 50G multiple times next to 66 - I can care less if the pucks go in repeatedly off their helmets or their asses.

Just find a way to get 20G+ in the net, and bring that north south heavy game

As an aside, regarding Anderson, what seems to be lost on most, or simply disregarded due to bias, is that he’s a pure transition game scorer, which is dependent on having a strong transition capable D group, which the Habs have lacked and continue to at the moment..

Is Vegas still right up to the cap after the Dadonov/Weber trade? I've seen a few posts about wanting to get bigger, there's a couple guys in Vegas who are big and need contracts (RFAs).

Nicholas Roy and Nicolas Hague could be good targets, both at or under 25 yrs old and over 6'4". Vegas could use some draft picks as well, which MTL have an abundance of.

Brett Howden could be interesting too, left shot 6'3", under 25, RFA.
Doubt they move Hague because I don't think his salary would be that bad. Roy might be interesting, I'd flip Evans+Poehling for him if they want to get more for cap hit. Feel like Roy could make a good 3rd line with Drouin and Armia.

Barron will be tested a lot. And Wideman is still around to play on the PP.

Roy is better than Evans or Poehling.

I know, that's why I'd trade both for him.. Evans and Poehling have only 2.8M cap hit while I think Roy alone will be close to 4M so maybe Vegas might make swap if they feel like Poehling has upside and Evans' post St.Louis production is for real.

Romanov has not shown to have potential to be a core player.

I don’t think it’s irrational to dismiss that list of players either, considering it took the Habs ten years to draft a single *potential* core player in Caufield.

Waiting two more years for two more years of draft picks so they can become impact players in 2+3 more years is really… not my idea of a good time.

Perhaps the players already drafted, such as Farrell and Roy, become NHLers in the next two years and impact players within two years after that… that’s still the 2026-2027 season we are looking at, at the earliest.

I don’t have any interest in a crappy team for four more years on the hope and dream that half a decade later it’ll suddenly turn good. I firmly believe it’s important to constantly acquire good and cap efficient players at all times — someone like Laine, if he’s available, can only help.
Again, I really think that what you're doing is treating all uncertainties/potentials as zero, and that's probabalistically irrational. There's a difference between having one lotto 6/49 ticket and having 13 million of them. If you have 13 million lotto 6/49 tickets, you expect a pay day.

For first rounders, even Bergevin was able to acquire two core players over eight years (Caulfield, Sergachev), with Guhle and Mailloux still uncertain. And on the trade market he acquired Petry, Danault, Anderson, and Suzuki, and on the UFA market he got Radulov and Toffoli. That's what a mediocre GM was able to do.

Reviewing the current situation:

Suzuki, Caulfield, Wright, Romanov are core players in my opinion. Romanov I expect to be second pair.

From {Calgary 1st, Florida 1st, 2023 1st, 1sts acquired for Petry, Anderson, Dvorak} we can expect 1 or 2 core players.

From all of the 2nd through 7th rounders of 2022 and 2023, we can expect 1 core player.

They should be able to acquire 1 core player from free agency/trades, which I think is quite conservative.

From {Guhle, Barron, Mailloux, Xhekaj, Primeau, Dobes, Roy, Farrel, Kidney, Kapanen, Touch, Mysak, Gorton, Ylonen, Harris, Poehling, Evans} we should expect two good players in my opinion.

That makes 10 good players.
