I don't believe that Carolina is a vastly superior team to the Habs. I think that the Habs won 3 of 3 in the regular season.

It may have been injuries. But in my opinion, if players are too injured to play, maybe they shouldn't be playing. Dobson was pretty bad for example. Maybe he just shouldn't have played.
you gotta at some point give Carolina credit. I mean they won the cup. And not only that they only lost 3 game and in nearly all of their games they let in 2 or less goals outside of game 1 against the habs and 2 games against Vegas.
Carolina was a good team that won the east and had a beast of a playoffs sweeping 2 series with 10 GA, then winning the ECF in 5 with only allowing 1 goal in 120 minutes of hockey in the last 2 games and then picked up a shut out in the deciding game of the SCF.
they deserve credit it wasn't some fluke that they went 16-3 to win a stanley cup.

MSL mistake was not making a roster change after the heartbreaking loss in game 3.
Would the team have gone on to beat the Canes? Probably not but who is to say.
But after that loss they were totally dejected and the next 2 games it looked like they totally gave up. They needed something for game 4. Maybe its X, maybe its Galley. But MSL sat on his hands and basically it looked like the team gave up.
Carolina were cup champs with only 3 loses all playoffs for a reason so I don't know if X would have swung the series but they could have used a shot of life in game 4.
Yes

From #13, #14, #20, #22, #48 and #53.

If McTavish gets sent to Detroit and Hischier re-signs, then I'm hoping for Zacha or Strome, as long as we don't move Hage or Z. And I'd look at DeBrusk seriously.

My tradeables:
- Engstrom
- Beck
- Pickford
- Kapanen
- Texier
- Struble
- Carrier
- Xhekaj (hopefully hold onto)
- Matheson (very very very doubtful)
- Reinbacher (last resort)
- Guhle (last resort)

Slafkovsky / Suzuki / Caufield
DeBrusk / Zacha / Demidov
Newhook / Evans / UFAorTradeorDach?
Bolduc / Danault / Anderson
*Zharovsky/Hage for the playoffs.

Hutson / Dobson
Matheson / Reinbacher
Guhle / UFAorTrade

Kapanen played only 7 out of 19 games in the playoffs. He was as well rested as any Canes player.

Agreed that Kapanen struggled but playing Veleno was not going to give you anything at all. At least you give Kapanen more playoff experience since he’s likely to be around for the long term.
1000x this. Veleno did next to nothing all year or the playoffs. Putting any of the forwards in for him would have been better even if it was as you say just to give them the experience of a finals game or in Gally’s case a final bow in a Habs jersey.

We had the Bergevin Foxhole and until the Veleno’s, Strubles, Carriers are gone we have the Quartexx Foxhole.

Yes they were/are.

Montreal has been ahead of schedule on their rebuild for a while now. They ran into an in-their-prime, deep and battle-tested team that plays with the kind of pace that you need to win a cup. They've been an analytics-darling for years and finally added enough talent to get over the hump. Montreal's still not there yet. Goaltending and elite talent was the only area Montreal had the edge and it still wasn't enough. They need some guys to take the next step, and one or both of the next prospect wave to hit and make improvements to the roster.

Might have been the case then but as per a recent The Athletic article, Hronek would appear to be available given the Nucks’ commitment to a full rebuild.

How far should the Habs go in pursuing him? He’s soon to turn 29 and has a $7,250,000 cap hit until 2031-32.
They should go as far as needed. He would be an amazing pickup

I am getting mixed feeling on what type of #2 centre we are looking for:
1) defensively responsible because our first line got a 100pt center and there is no place on the PP1, who would you take out of PP1?

2) offensively minded center because you already got a Selke winner on the roster. A center that will make Demidov production explode.

Rich people problem!

We lost to Carolina because we had no depth and they were rusty game one.

Then they adjusted and cruised to the cup since.

Carolina clearly were non injured and fresh even against Vegas. That 12 days was brutal for us

The only thing we could have exploited was Andersen but we decided to shoot only twice a game.

That's why we need two top 6 players and new depth.

Anderson and Danault won't be back for long either

💯

And as Brindamour pointed out, they got "lucky" by being almost perfectly healthy through the POs.

The margin for success is very slim. That was a veteran team with a very large history of falling short when it counted. This year things tipped in their favor, as they do every year for every winner.

The hardest part is building a team that can win, and keeping the right pieces together when falling short... which they did.

Yes, they made some additions that worked out...

But last fall, would anyone say Ehlers was an upgrade over Rantanen/Necas?

Ehlers had 21 pts in his previous 43 PO games and was fully healthy in only 3 of 10 previous seasons.
With Carolina - 100 of 100 games, 18pts/18 PO games.

Was Miller & Nikishin a guaranteed upgrade over Burns & Orlov?

They kept a very solid core in place that has grown together through many failures, kept the faith in a coach & culture that until now was known as ECF chokers, and kept tweaking the edges until hitting the payday.

No one's talking about swapping the first line in and out of lineup... the lowest impact players in the series. But if your team clearly cannot do shit for 2, 3 and then 4 straight games, you make adjustments. Doesn't matter what and who.
I am!

Why was Caufield not removed from Suzuki's line when he was generating next to nothing? Put him on the 2nd line where he might get more favorable defensive match-up's and let Demidov play on the top line in his place. I'd have at least tried it when it became clear that 13 and 14 weren't working out.

To Anaheim: Oliver Kapanen, Alex Carrier, David Reinbacher, 2026 1st

To Montreal: Mason McTavish and Tristan Luneau

Habs get their second line center and a nice right hand shot defenseman prospect that’s NHL ready.

Ducks get a replacement center at a huge cap savings, a veteran right hand shot defenseman, a prospect right hand shot defender and a 1st.

Fair for both teams?

I've also wondered about a Kappy for McTavish swap.

I think it could make sense for the Ducks. He's cost-controlled and can play 3C behind Strome until he is ready for 2C duties, plus he costs pennies.

I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being a deal centred around them.
