Dach - because hes a big, right handed centre i was fine with it, but that wasn't a good trade.I saw a comment that Dach and Newhook are Hughes' two major trades.
That is not correct.
The other major trades include Petry-Matheson, Sean Monahan (multiple times), the Patrick Laine acquisition, the Toffoli/Chiarot/Lehkonen/Kulak sales, and moving up in the draft to acquire Michael Hage.
Hughes is an active man.
Newhook- didn't like it and he hasn't done anything to make anyone think otherwise.
Petry - Matheson - got a useful players for one that didn't want to be here anymore, but he's not part of this team when they're ready to really push forward, so he needs to be dealt, otherwise it's a very minor deal and at this point you're probably getting a 2nd, or a 3rd for him.
Monahan- great trade got a 1st to take him on, waiting to see what becomes of that. Then traded him away for a 1st and used that 1st (plus a 2nd) to draft Hage. Huge win.
Laine - didn't want him because I assumed it would cost more and hes often injured and not as good as he was.
Was wrong on the cost to acquire him, but right on how he's not good. I'm still waiting for those who argued with me, or would just laugh react to admit they were wrong.
Toffoli - got a 1st, Heineman and a later pick. Don't remember what that later pick became, but Heineman has been solid. The 1st was Mesar, so a disappointment. This trade, as of right now is maybe a meh.
Chariot - got a 1st and Smilanic as the pieces I remember.
1st was traded with a 2nd for Newhook, shit deal. Smilanic wasn't even an AHLer. Bad trade in that they got those assets and they turned into nothing worth while. Maybe the habs can use Newhook and a 1st for someone useful and save it somewhat.
Lehkonen for a 2nd and Barron. Barron wasn't working out and got traded for Carrier. Next year if the Habs can trade him retained for a solid return would make this trade a win. 2nd round pick was traded to move up and get Hage. Lehkonen took off in Colorado, so this could be a nice win for both teams, right now it's a win for the avs and not bad for the Habs.
Kulak for a 2nd and a 7th isnt really a big trade, but just seems like it because the habs decided to take a chance and draft Hutson. This relies solely on a bunch of teams being like "yeah, Hutson is too small", including the habs. If the Habs really likes him, they would have traded up to gran him.
So, are we even sure we want Hughes and Co. to make a big trade for a 2nd line centre ? There's a pretty good chance they f*** it up.
