Player needs to want to be here. Historically the ones we got lucky with had played for a Canadian team before (Cammalleri with CGY, Hamrlik with CGY, Cole with EDM, to an extent Radulov in QC City) so it depends how player is wired and how he sees our team. Tavares could be Sundin 2.0, let's hope the disrespect by management and fans make him want to turn into a villain à la John Cena
Agreed. But nonetheless, there has to be money incentives to.

Until now his two main trades have been underwhelming : Dach and Newhook have Not met expectations. Laine is slow and always injured.
These two trades don't look good right now. No argument from me.

That said, they are indicative of the style of management Hugo has shown so far. Once they identified a need, they acted to address it and were not shy of spending assets to do it. This sounds like something obvious for a GM, but it's quite a contrast with Bergevin, who was more focused on getting abstract "value" from his trades, often with little relation to roster construction. Thus, we had glaring holes for years with little to no visible effort to address them.

As a side note, I'd say Matheson was also a major trade. They had a disgruntled and aging Petry on their hands and managed to exchange him for a guy that ate tons of hard minutes while our youth developed, scored a lot of points and was the only consistent source of transition ability from the blueline for two seasons. He's still on our top 4 and we'll get a nice asset for him should we decide to move him. Good trade.

I think players are smart enough to see the Habs are on the up and up. If you’re looking for a 5+ year contract, then you should see the Habs lineup and be enticed, assuming your goal is to win the Cup.

We still have to overpay for tax reasons though, that’s for sure.
Yeah. I don't think I would go more than 4 years for a ufa. Probably guys like Granlund and Duchene won't ask for more than 3 years. Maybe Granlund we would need to give him the 4th year if we want to win the auction.

As for Bennett, off course he will ask for 7 years but I don't give him that because we still will have to overpay him and after the 4th year, it will be problematic. So if Bennett is the no.1 target for Hugo, I would give him the 9M$ per but only for 4 years. If after 3 years, Hage or any other prospect is ready to take the 2C spot, you move Bennett to wing or you trade him at 50% retention for the last year of his contract.

Can the Habs afford Marner?

He probably wants 7 years × 13 million per, and honestly I'm surprised the Leafs did not offer that. The Leafs without Marner are a bubble team at best.

We absolutely can afford to pay big bucks for 1 UFA. Identify your target and pay.

I agree with the fact that I prefer Hugo to MB due to the fact they at least chose a direction and Stick with it.

Ok, fantasy rebuilding proposal for kicks,

Trade a 1st, a 2nd, Dach, Newhook, and Mailloux for Thomas.
Acquire Marner for 7 years × 13 million per year.

Demidov - Suzuki - Marner
Caulfield - Thomas - Slafkovsky
Heinemen - Beck - Laine
Anderson - Evans - Gallagher
Spare: Roy , Davidson, Kappanen

Hutson - Matheson
Guhle - Carrier
Xhekaj - Reinbacher
Spare: Struble, Engstrom

Laine on the third line would have the impact that Kessel did got Pittsburgh when he was on the third line. If he doesn't play well next year then he loses his spot to a prospect.

I think we're going to throw stupid money at him. Like 7x9M or something.
Really doubt they give him more money than Suzuki. Probably 7x7. I'm just not sure about long term deal with Sam. He deserves it but he plays so intense, his body gonna be a problem in 2-3years. I would prefer to go for someone short term like Granlund/Nelson till some of our guys are ready.

Love the optimism but we are not getting Robert Thomas for bunch of crap. If they ever decide to trade him, teams are gonna lineup to get him. StLouis probably gonna want one elite asset in return, just not happening...

You sign Bennett for 7 years. You're happy the first 4 years and the last 3 years he decline, he's overpaid and you regret the contract. That's the deal with that kind of player at his age.
Yet everyone wants Crosby and his Salary at 38+ lol

Don t see Marner leaving TOR because of the 8th year they are able to offer. Thomas won t be traded by STL, would be like asking MTL to trade Suzuki.

With his financial troubles with Canada Revenu, he might just want to live in the US to avoid anything else similar happening or just simply as a middle finger by paying less canadian income tax as possible.

Would take Marner in a heartbeat. Tavares however I think he’s a class player but too slow to invest big money into and give him the big role. If he can do what Giroux did in Ottawa, then I’m all for it.

If Marner leaves Toronto, the last place he would ever sign is Montreal. He hasn't responded well to the scrutiny in Leaf land, and it would be just as tough to play here. If he leaves, I see him heading to an American team, not necessarily a contender. He seems to be all about the money over winning a cup and certainly hasn't been a guy who stepped up come playoff time.

I saw a comment that Dach and Newhook are Hughes' two major trades.

That is not correct.

The other major trades include Petry-Matheson, Sean Monahan (multiple times), the Patrick Laine acquisition, the Toffoli/Chiarot/Lehkonen/Kulak sales, and moving up in the draft to acquire Michael Hage.

Hughes is an active man.
