If Marner leaves Toronto, the last place he would ever sign is Montreal. He hasn't responded well to the scrutiny in Leaf land, and it would be just as tough to play here. If he leaves, I see him heading to an American team, not necessarily a contender. He seems to be all about the money over winning a cup and certainly hasn't been a guy who stepped up come playoff time.
The player that I would most want from Toronto 's core is Nylander, but that said it's Marner that might be available.
Marner hasn't stepped up in the playoffs, but that's partly because the playoffs are harder, and Toronto is a top heavy team. The offense would be more spread out in Montreal, so he could either step up more, or absorb the other team's tough matchups and let the other lines step up more.
