You wonder with the Blues and Isles being in no man’s land if guys like Horvat, Robert Thomas could be available if the offer is good enough.
I have a hard time seeing us get Thomas without giving up Hutson/Demidov. He's their Nick Suzuki and I don't even see them retooling/rebuilding. Best case is Matt Duchene given the limited cap space the Stars have. I'd also go after William Karlsson if Vegas wants to clear up more room. Suzuki-Duchene-Karlsson-Evans would be awesome.

Let see where Cgy pick ends up, I could see Habs putting up a large package of prospects + both 1st rounders to try and pry Caleb Desnoyers (whom I expect to go between 5-7) at the draft, and then grab a veteran 2-3 year solution at 2C while Desnoyers cultivates
Would be ideal.

Who do you think is a realistic option for us at 2C?

I think Zacha is a pretty good choice that shouldn’t be too expensive to acquire.

I think if there's a position worth spending on. it's top 6 C.

We should be looking at :

- Jordan Kyrou
- Bo Horvat/Barzal
- Cirelli (cap crunch incoming for Tampa)
- Washington (Many C/Ws in their system and looking to fill up their prospect + pick pool)

That being said, we'll have a much clearer picture after the Stanley cup final.

Kyrou plays wing and same with Barzal.

Horvat is a legit target, as would Robert Thomas. Cirelli is good but I don’t think the crunch hurts them enough for them to move him?

Thomas
Horvat
Zacha

They would be the 3 most likely targets, IMO.

Robert thomas has the same value than Suzuki. Not really a likely target, would cost Demidov ++

Horvat and Zacha are more realistic acquisition, would not be againts it.

Thomas is indeed a stretch. I don’t even think STL is considering a rebuild at this point.

Horvat is the best case out of the realistic acquisitions.

This summer I believe we should try for Bennett as a UFA or trade for Pavel Zacha as a stop-gap until Hage is ready.

I’d also consider going after Ehlers this summer for additional scoring depth.

While I'd kick tires on a winger like Ehlers, don't think I'd go that route unless we missed completely on top 6 C upgrade.

If we go UFA
3- Bennett
5- Duchene
7- Granlund

If we go trade
1- Crosby
2- Malkin
4- Zegras
6- ROR
8- Hayton

1 of those 8
+ Demidov
+ 1 of Armia/Dvo (@2yr/2.5M per max)
+ Beck/Kapanen/Roy/Davidson? ready for top 9 injury call ups &/or stepping in if we can offload Gally

we'd be pretty set up front to be a reliable playoff team next 2yrs.

CC Suzuki Slaf
Laine ?? Demidov
Newhook Dach Heineman
Armia Evans Anderson
Gally (Roy, Kapanen, Beck)

Guhle Carrier
Hutson Matheson
Xhekaj Reinbacher
Strubble

You forgot to replace Matheson by a legit top 4 RHD

With Granlund or Duchene, I think you could offer a 2 year deal at a really high cap hit, say 7M AAV.

That way, in two years you can reevaluate and see if Hage is the guy or if you were able to draft, trade for, or sign someone else. We have the cap space.

But signing a guy like Bennett for 7 years is risky for me. Many players decline after 32.

Didn't Barzal used to play C? He might be better to play wing on a first line, but okay for 2nd line C duty?

We could always overpay for shorter term. Something like 4x10

you have to go after bad teams that are about to rebuild or good teams that need to sign their core and let go of slightly older players
also I think you gotta make the trade - no big UFAs will sign unless we crazy overpay.

There's basically no forward including Joe Thornton's mid-Art Ross season campaign that returned a Demidov or Hutson level prospect in the last 20 years. Robert Thomas is at best a top 20 forward in the league.
