This is how most long suffering Habs fans feel right now. We’ve been through a lot, been promised a lot, now it’s time to put up or shut up.

It’s frustrating because it’s been so long and Habs fans aren’t known for their patience.

As Larry Robinson said so succinctly in his book - “Montreal fans are with you, win or tie… just don’t tie too often”

Sam Bennett has to be the number one target of the off season. He brings everything we need and with Florida likely having little cap room to sign him AND Ekblad, his previous relationship with Hughes, his glowing words about Montreal and the ability to make a truckload of money… you have to think that’s the guy Hughes will work to get… and I honestly think we’ve got a strong shot at landing him.

Another couple of targets I would look at:

From Utah: Lawson Crouse

Crouse is a veteran power forward who seems to have kind of lost his spot in Utah after being a model of consistency for years. I think a change of scenery could help return him to his 20 goal a year form and his heavy game would translate well in the playoffs.

I’d offer up Newhook and possibly a mild sweetener for Crouse.

The other guy I’d try to poach would be Mavrik Bourque from Dallas. The Stars are in real deep water next year with the Rantanen and Johnston contracts kicking in for serious cash, and Harley only a year away from a major raise. Bourque could be the odd man out, especially as he’s heading to RFA status. Habs could offer sheet him if Dallas doesn’t want to make a deal, or they could move a couple of picks/prospects as Dallas emptied out the cupboard when they loaded up. Maybe someone like Mailloux as Dallas looks to need young defense prospects.

Habs start 2025-2026 with:

Caufield - Suzuki - Slafkovsky
Demidov - Bennett - Laine
Crouse - Bourque - Dach
Heineman - Evans - Anderson
Gallagher

Hutson - Matheson
Guhle - Carrier
Xhekaj - Reinbacher
Struble

Montembeault
Dobes
That has to be the most realist proposals ive seen in a while. I like that game plan, send it to Hughes :P

I'm actually pretty optimistic about the future of our team. In 2 or 3 years, I expect we'll have more talent on the ice than we've ever had in the past 30 years.

We've got elite potential at F, D, and G. The salary cap is going up and we're about to get rid of some hefty past contracts. We will be able to sign good free agents and fill up the holes our team has. And there's still the possibility that we get some nice catches in the next few drafts to add on to the core.

To expect generational players or to expect our team to be akin to the Pens, Wings, or Lightning of the past is crazy. Most contenders are not that lucky.

I was just hopping for more superstar calibers coming out of our tank (top picks). The only one I see is Demidov. I’m not saying we didnt picked nice players, but I was hoping more from thoses 5 years, at least a top center( A Bedard, Celibrini). And when I look at futur drafts, I see potential superstar (Schaeffer, McKenna, Dupont) that we gonna missed out because the team get closer to the pack. Even our arch rivals got Matthews in their rebuild. I know it doesn’t mean automacly succes in the playoffs. Maybe it’s my 30 years of suffering coming out tonight lmfao. I know we have so good piece and this club is gonna be more exciting than the years of Bergevin, but I was expecting a little bit more from the first true rebuild Ive withnessed as a fan. Time will tell.

Yea, I get it. We could have been luckier and drafted 1st during a year with a Dupont. I can't blame the management, though, because you can't really control that.

Overall, we've had terrible luck in the draft in the past 30 years, so in comparison I think this rebuild has landed us more talent than ever before. I'm hoping it's going to be enough to finally end the Stanley Cup drought.

Trying to get a playoffs push with Beck as your second line center playing Pezzetta level minutes is bad looking. That’s screams rebuilding team that needs other top picks.
I’m sure we could have traded Beck, Mailloux+ to Buffalo for a $7M 40pt part-time Centre. Would that have made you happy?

Rebuild is over…now it’s all about growing & adding towards becoming a regular playoff team….starting now

Beck will be eased into 12-14 TOI role over next 10-15GP. It will happen organically
I wouldn't call it over. I would say they tear down part is clearly over, they have played well enough to keep the team together and see how it goes. Now it will be about adding pieces as needed and letting the young guys develop properly. Not rushing them to the NHL.

Rebuid is over but our two top prospect dont even play in the nhl…lmfao ok

So what?

The prospects that are not in the NHL yet seem to be progressing just fine. Would you rather they be in the NHL and getting kicked in the teeth every night like Bedard?

From Utah: Lawson Crouse

I’d offer up Newhook and possibly a mild sweetener for Crouse.
Why are we giving up a sweetener for Crouse when Newhook has been pretty damn good lately. Scoring more points. And is 3 1/2 years younger and making $1.4M less per season. While being an RFA instead of a UFA at the end of the contract.

Has Crouse been a better player the last few years? Slightly. But those are all years Newhook hasn't had yet.

I'm keeping Newhook.

I just don’t whos in our system is gonna be Stankoven available for trade. I mean people dont even want to trade Hage and he is not on the lvl Stankoven was at the same age.

We haven't drafted him yet. It took Dallas 5 drafts to get as deep as they are. It helps that players want to sign there, too.

2025 is only our 4th draft with this group (2022, 2023, 2024). We need 2 more good drafts (2025 & 2026) before we can start throwing real prospects into trades.

Unfortunately, 2025 is a weaker draft, but we'll see what happens. Maybe Cullen Potter or Cameron Schmidt end up in our system then traded for help at 2027 TDL.

Hage is a top 10-15 prospect in the world right now?! I like Hage btw. It’s like you guys have no idea who Stankoven is. He was the mvp of the AHL as a rookie and star at juniors lvl. He did pretty good in the NHL with one of the most stacked offense. He’s gonna be real good in Carolina.
Yes Hage is not Stankoven

Wasn’t encouraging to hear Hughes said he didn’t had the munition to get a top 6 center for the futur today. Guess what, we won’t have more ammunition this summer lol

Hughes takes the L today. Statut quo is bad. Refusing to trade Armia for a second because you said so to suzuki, it’s sad. Either sell or buy a little at least to help them.

Hughes will have to get better pretty quickly at hockey trades. Trading a player for pick or negociating a contract, he’s good. But hockey trades? He takes the L pretty often since he’s here.
Prices are too high at TDL. Summertime has Black Friday sales on NHL players

And that’s fine.

But I also wrote “and possibly a mild sweetener”, ie a third or fourth round pick. Nothing of significance.

Newhook has played okay lately, but he has done that before, where he’s good in spurts and then disappears completely.

I’d rather have the guy that is a tenacious forechecker that always is close to the league lead in hits and has been a career steady producer, while also being able to drop the gloves (taking some of that burden away from Anderson and Xhekaj). I don’t think Newhook is as hard to play against and I’d like a third line that has opposing defensemen awake at night knowing they’re going to be punished physically.

But that’s just me, I can see where you’re coming from.

There's going to be teams that if they crash out of the playoffs, or not make it Will be looking to make a big change and the Habs can be in on a surprise piece.

Having some more ammunition would have been nice, but they really need to make a big trade and a sizeable signing.

Boston could honestly be looking to move on from McAvoy and Pastrnak. Bruins don't seem like they're "not in the same division" bs, so there's a chance.

Unless they're simply aiming to retool with some ufas and trades.

Dallas likely can't re-sign Duchene and possibly Seguin,.so there's a potential stop gap at 2nd line centre.

If McAvoy become available, you need to be all in on that

Prices are high for a reason: you’re improving the roster for the playoff games to come. It can make the difference between winning and losing a series.

Hughes doesn’t believe in this roster’s ability to compete in the playoffs, so he didn’t want to buy any short term help.

This is fair enough but it feels strange to neither zig nor zag. If he didn’t love the roster to invest big (totally correct) he could have acquired some modest depth just to reinforce in case of injuries.

Anyway, it isn’t a disaster, it’s just a bit confusing and feels like he is not as decisive as we thought.

Mcavoy is exactly what we need, but they won’t trade him to us. Carlo/Marchand are nowhere near the level of McAvoy and I do think player quality makes a difference when trading with rivals.

No doubt we gonna trade some picks but are you really getting top talent with mid first rounders and 2nd pick? You get projects like Dach and Newhook.

The Habs have done very well in the second round recently. They have a 25% success rate in the past two decades, where that means players like Subban, Lehkonen, Romanov, Hutson, and now possibly Beck and Kappanen.
