The biggest need for this team right now is stabilizing the defense. Hutson-Matheson as a 1st pair is not durable as an option. Hutson needs a guy with great mobility but way more solid defensively. He literally needs a RH Guhle.

Offensively I think with the arrival of Demidov, we will be more than ok, I would even say top 10 in the league. I would add grit and toughness on the bottom 6 though. A guy like Olivier would be great.

Actually it's the exact opposite. Need Matheson and Newhook. Evans and Armia can be replaced with players who have some scoring ability.

based on what he's said and what they want to do, Matheson isn't getting shopped until next trade deadline. Assuming they don't resign him

Yes it would be hard to do especially if they continue to climb upwards.

I'm ok with signing Armia if he wants to stay here and accepts a 1-2 year deal at less than he is making now (which I doubt, but maybe)

I'm convinced Evans will want the best contract possible. This is his one chance. He is very replaceable. If we sign him to that deal we are taking away space and cash.... I want us to be a contender in 3 years. Evans is not a 3C on a contender. Pass unless he signs for 3 (maybe4) years.

Personally I think the Habs may be a slightly worse team next year and sellers again for the last time in many years.

Of course I am also really hoping they win the next 10 games and make a historic run with Dobes carrying the cup at the parade!

I don’t think Evans is easily replaced. Like Danault I feel his lost will be felt in a major fashion if he leaves. Those types of reliable player aren’t dime a dozen in the UFA market and cost value on the trade market. Beck ain’t the replacement yet.

Ghost is done. Don't want him for 2 more years. He wouldn't have signed here anyway.

If they keep Dvorak, Gallagher, Anderson, Armia and Evans on the team they could be worse even with Demidov. At the very least Dvorak should be gone and Gallagher needs to be bought out. Evans can go if he doesn't come cheap. Add Beck, Davidson and Demidov, Reinbacher if he is ready, and there is no chance they are worse.

You don't have to buy out Gallagher. You shouldn't leave too many spots for rookies or you're going to rush some of them.

I think Dvo and Armia spots (and Pezz I guess but not for a rookie) are enough for next year.

Keep or replace Evans. Replace Pezz with some tough vet.

Try to replace Savard with a legit top 4 RD to push Carrier down. If Mailloux/Reinbacher end the year on fire, entertain offers for Matheson.

Beck, Roy, Farrell, Davidson, Tuch and Kapanen fight for Dvo/Armia spots.

If there are some interest in Anderson/Gallagher, you obviously listen but no negative value trade (retention is ok if needed) or buyout.

I feel like we can replace Evans with a slightly overpaid veteran C for a few years to bridge the gap. The problem with Evans is that he will want terma and if you don't trade him you miss out on the opportunity cost.

the problem with Danault (and Petry & Gallagher) was that we didn't get anything back when they left... imagine how much further along we would be now if we had traded all those guys before their big contracts...

Newhook is on of the few guys who forces the D to back in. He creates a lot of chances that currently have not had any results. I feel like there is more to Newhook and to early to give up on him. Trust me he pisses me off some games but the work ethic is there.

If they trade Matheson who is going to take his minutes. Since the Carrier trade Matheson is playing 25 minutes a night on average (and has been playing better since he doesn’t have to face as tough of matchups as the Guhle-Carrier pairing helps with that). I’d argue that other than Guhle taking power play 2 minutes the defenceman are playing about the right amount of minutes for their talent level right now. It’s a good reason why they are 12-4-2 in this games.

Without Matheson the defence probably looks like:

A right shot defenceman similar to Guhle would be ideal but what team is looking to trade that player? If a team has a really good right shot defenceman in their system it’s rare to see them traded. Hopefully Reinbacher can be that player but I think he’s at least a few years away from reaching that level.

Habs biggest need is a solid right shot Dman and a top 6 forward. If Hughes/Gorton are able to do this it will greatly improve the teams chances for playoffs. We got guys sitting in the wrong chair and not sustainable long term. Find the 2 pieces that will work for you long term. They have nobody on the farm other than Gustav Lindstrom, Logan Mailloux and Orvil Ruchenchuker is still rehabbing his knee and Mailloux is not ready. Stock piling picks etc will only get you so far management owes it to the team and the fans to make these improvements. Nothing is impossible when you legit want to win. We have all seen teams like Carolina, Vegas and the Leafs always trying to improve. Habs are being left behind and that is on management. If they are unwilling to make these fixes they are better off to sell UFA players and tank.

Slaf's regression this yr and impending UFAs (Armia/Dvo/Pez/Evans/Savard) will force management to kickstart trade talks if not already begun. Unfortunately, these guys bring little value. Slaf is still young and is still seen as part of the solution, however that contract might make it or break it for Kent.

I would keep Evans in the fold but he will ask for the moon. Better to stockpile on picks than trade for B/C prospects who are given a second chance. The results are still inconclusive on Newhook and Dach. Barron is somehow turning it around in Nashville, but is far from being that projected elite D.

Next year, you have bigger names that you can ship (Matheson/Laine) who bring more value to a team.

Anderson/Gallagher are BargainBin era costly investments that are still haunting the club. They have improved this year but are not top six talent anymore and I just don't see how another team will ask for them, unless retention is involved. I would hold on to Anderson as he is a poor men's third liner with grit.

Overall, Hutson is a pleasant surprise and I do hope Hage/Demidov will blossom. Just keep drafting right and things will fall into place. Trust the process. In brief, Habs have nothing of value to bring guys to improve the team, unless you start talking about Suzuki, Caufield/Laine/Hutson and possibly Matheson (who is no so great defensively). I am not sold on Guhle either, but he might actually develop into that top stay at home D.

If Anderson/Gallagher can be dealt easily than you might actually have a legitimate chance to grab Rantanen for 14 million/yr. Yet again, that's a pipe dream.

Seattle has no interest in trading Beniers and even if they did that contract looks awful for a player who we already have a much better version of in Suzuki.

He can be a great #2C, exactly what we need.

Hard to imagine the Habs being slightly worse next season; the addition of Demidov alone should give them quite an edge compared with this year.

The crux of a successful transition from sellers to buyers will be what the Habs decide to do with Matheson, Newhook/Dach and Evans - and maybe to a lesser extent Armia and Gallagher.

Matheson is not a viable option long term; do they package him for a RHD or use him a stop-gap for Reinbacher?

Evans is a viable option long term for the bottom-6/PK, but can common grounds be found on a reasonable contract?

Can Dach finally establish himself as C2 with Demidov and Laine on his wings? If he can’t with them, hard to envision him being able to with anyone…

Can Newhook establish himself a C3? If not, finding an external LHC solution is paramount.

Armia is a viable option short term for the bottom-6/PK, but would he be open to a short term contract?

Gallagher is done, can he be traded with once the Habs recoup their retention spots or simply bought out?

At 50% an acquiring team is paying Gallagher 3.25 mil. I doubt anyone would be willing to do that (unless MB can get Blake to take him). Just buy him out.

In : A center like O'Reilly from Nashville and a RD like R. Andersson from Calgary

Both are good vets with few seasons left on their contract. Perfect target to let our young players develop and adapt to the NHL.

We have many chips we can use to complete the trade : 1st pick (top 5 protected) , 1st pick Calgary , Roy, Struble , Matheson 50% retained , Mesar , Engstrom
