Trade Matheson

If they do trade Matheson, that could be a pretty major deal. It might be hard to do during the season...

Now? Team is still in the mix. Doubt they’re selling anyone for now.

OK give it a few weeks or a month, but there are so many teams "in the mix" I just don't think this is our year.

but maybe I'm still scared from not trading Souray...

I really hope we trade Savard, Evans and Armia.

I love the way the team is playing but I just don't think not trading those guys will age well..

It's a tough call...

We are, healthy, a borderline playoff team. And the young core has shown great resolve and buy-in.

If we are still in the WC hunt by the deadline, KH will have to balance "rewarding" the young core by either keeping the roster quality in place or potentially adding to it vs sending the distinct message that "this year doesn't matter" & selling current assets for futures... That risks seriously deflating the group and undermining the buy-in.

Hopefully, they get Evans & Armia extended on reasonable deals, and find a hockey trade solution for Dvorak/Savard (getting a mix of futures and right now assets in return).

The Habs made their bed with the truly god awful start to the season. You can’t show up to play after 25% of the season has been played.

Selling those three (and others) will help take the sting off missing the playoffs.

On the other hand you never know what crisis will hit other teams were up against — CBJ just lost Monahan for up to two months.

Yep there is a top 7-8, then a drop. McQueen's health issue makes him a risky prospect and GMs are risk averse. so thats a top 7 at that point. Within that top 7, you have of course Schaefer at the top who projects as a superstar, he is in a tier of his own since there are question marks regarding both Hagens and Martone. Misa, Hagens Matone are the 2nd tier so the top 4 is pretty set at this point, unless Frondell or Eklund have a push in the 2nd half and make their way in that 2nd tier. I like Desnoyers alot and wish the Habs draft him, but his upside is tad more limited than the other top guys, kid projects as a solid 2C, very solid in all areas of the game.

After that top 7-8, there is a signifiant drop as far as the fowards are concerned, you are looking at quality middle 6 or top 6 talents with more question marks. The Ds are fine, but nothing that exciting either, Mrtka could be the most attractive of the bunch since he flashes some upside some nights, but there is no guerantee either since he is pretty raw at that point. Hensler has been a huge disappointment and Im not too familiar with the others, but I dont feel like Im missing much.

Then after the top 15-20, you are looking at 2nd/3rd rounders in a normal year, the depth is that bad, the USNDTP is pretty weak this year, so is the Euro pool. Overall, thats not a good year to get a late 1st at the deadline, better ask for a 2026 1st.

It seems like a good strategy for Hughes this year would be to trade a few 25' picks in return for 26' and 27' picks, to GMs who are eager to overpay for a player they really want at the draft table. The prospect pipeline is already full and we cannot sign them all, so it wouldn't be a bad thing to draft less players this year.

But having so many picks is still an asset as a rebuilding team, and extending the time frame during which we accumulate a lot of draft picks provides a good foundation for long term success. Eventually, we might not be able to pay for all of our young stars, so having cheaper young blood still coming from the draft by the end of the decade would be a great idea.
