Gallagher won’t be the 13th.

Maybe they find a trade partner, but they won’t put him in the press box. They won’t do him dirty like that - he’s still wears a letter.
I agree. I think we can trade him while retaining 50% for the last two years of his contract. At 3,25 M$ he is a useful player.

There is no need to trade Gallagher, he’s had a solid rebound season on pace for 20G, and with the cap set to skyrocket and the core minus Hutson locked up, cap space over next 2-seasons isn’t a big deal.

Over course of next 80-100 GP, if all progresses steadily, Heineken will likely displace Gallagher on a 3rd line w Gally slotting down, and potentially being dealt the last year of his contract

Only if we need to do it. Right now, we would have to add someone through UFA or trade to get to this cap strap situation. What we have currently works and Gallagher can just expire.

Personally, I would consider that for his last year (50% retention). Easier for other teams to take a chance ($3.35M) for one year vs two and it also applies to the Habs cap (1 year vs 2 year hits).

If Dach didn't have his injury last year and broke out into a 60-80 pts center, then I'd get a little worried for his raise. Gallagher and Anderson's contract overlap Dach's new one by one year.

I agree but there was a context to my comment. All in all, I don't want Gallagher's contract to be a limitation for us to get better players that will push us to the next level.

They should say the only player that they never trade is Demidov. After that, every prospect have their own price. Bullshit, they won't trade a young player. They did it Barron and Harris recently.
Gorton specifically stated “we have a plan and expect to compete for a long time and we won’t be trading young players who we expect to be here for that”

Barron, Harris were clearly not players HuGo felt were part of the longterm plans…

It is a big deal to keep throwing him out there. It’s not even about the cap savings, it’s about him being terrible. After a decent start to the season, he’s regressed to being a liability. From 13 points in the first 23 games to 7 in the last 25 and mistake after mistake on the ice.

Oh, the full quote is more amusing. So everyone not on the team playing outside of Demidov and Reinbacher are probably trade options.

Paul Byron was wearing a letter and we waived him a few years ago.

Don't know why Gallagher should receive special treatment? We have been more than generous and patient with him the past 5 years. He needs to go.

So next year I would love the following lines :

Slaf-Suzuki-Caufield
Demidov-Dach-Laine
Heineman-Evans-Armia
Olivier-Beck-Anderson
Gallagher

Use Newhook with other pieces to get help on the right side of D.
Had to look up the cap hit just to see. Rounded up, new deals for Heine, Evans and Army. New deal for Olivier based on what he's asking for.

$7.6M - $7.9M - $7.9M

$950K - $3.4M - $8.7M

$2M(RFA) - $4.5M - $4M

$4M - $850K - $5.5M

$6.5M

$63,800,000

Next year... this is the underlying structure I want the team to build around:

CC - Suzuki - Demidov
Laine - XXX/Dach - XXX/Dach
Heineman - Newhook - Slaf
Armia - Evans - Anderson

Guhle - Carrier
Hutson - new RD
Wifi - new RD/Reinbacher

Yeah we definitely need a no.2 center if the plan is playing Slaf on the 3rd line but I'm pretty sure it's not the case. I think Demidov coming in will have a big enough impact and will start him with Dach and Laine, with PP1 time.

For me Newhook is trade bait like Matheson. Don't see a spot for him long term.

Reinbacher definitely makes the starting line up next season and 15-16 minutes is the right spot for him at the beginning.

Need a top 4 RHD absolutely our biggest apparent hole on the roster. Matheson is only staying if we don't find that player.

Pieces available for a trade :

Newhook
Matheson
Mailloux
Kapanen
Roy
Mesar
2025 Habs 1st
2025 Calgary/Flo 1st
2025 Pitts 2nd
2025 Habs 2nd
2026 Habs 1st
2026 Habs 2nd
2026 CBJ 2nd

I guess we have pieces to do something profitable for the team long term.

There is no point of making that trade but If I had the choice between Hutson or Seider, I would probably go with Seider. He brings more on the table, especially in the playoffs
Seider absolutely schooled Hutson yesterday. Put on a defensive clinic while adding 2 assists. Seider is an elite complete tower of a defenseman, the type you need to rely on in the playoff. Like Hutson a lot like everyone, but it would be a tough call to make between the two.

The reason I wouldn't do that deal is because we have Reinbacher that will essentially be the same kind of defenseman as Seider. Not sure he will be as good but he will be pretty solid.

I'm getting a bit frustrated with Slaf being hot and cold. Part of me think that he's been given the key to the 1st line a bit too fast and he need to "earn" it. Playing with good players on the 3rd line could be a good learning time and I'm curious to see what him and Heineman can generate of the forecheck. I'm not sold on Newhook either as a 3C so he can be replace by someone else in a trade, but that is a lot of moving parts to acquire: 2c, 3c, top RD.

Granted, Demidov hasn't played in the NHL yet and I put him on the 1st line... my line a re more projection of what could be the team mid-next season. So that why I think Reinbacher could be part of the D. Ideally, I would drop Carrier with Xhakaj, Guhler with Reinbacher and Hutson has a new partner.

I wonder if there will be any advanced trades during the 4 nations break. GM's will have a lot of time on their hands. Maybe they focus on scouting.

4 nation cup break (Feb 10-21). Trade Deadline is March 7th

I feel like it's going to be a deader dead deadline this year.
