HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #89: 2024-2025 season part II

I think the skating/speed narrative with EP40 is a reach at age 26. Just some fans nit picking a players game when they are trending down. If there is a underlining issue with his health, doctors and/or due diligence can find that out for us.

However, it is a real debate in terms of EP40 being worth it or not. Could end up being a franchise talent added (like Eichel) or a negative contract where he is 60-80 pts on a new team. Right now today, he is averaging pt/game in his career. And I'm guilty of liking shooters/snipers so I can be gullible to it

Love Pettersson's talent and if we feel he fits with Suzuki, we should be open to it. I just don't know what other teams are offering. That's the part us fans are blind on.
I like your trade package outside of Slaf. While I don't think he will ever be the player EP is in the regular season, I think Slaf is going to be a playoff performer, and he adds needed size to our top 6. We could really regret that. While I am not a huge fan of EP, the thought of him and Demidov together does make me excited.

Throwing rudimentary economics at this year's deadline:

With the WC race being insanely close in the East, there's only a single team you could definitely label a predetermined seller right now and that's Buffalo.

In the West, there are a couple more (with a less tight race): Nashville, San Jose, and Chicago (maybe Seattle, but I wouldn't label them yet).

We have ~20 games left until then. There will inevitably be more teams to fall off and definitely become 'out' (and sell), but how many? Looks like it has the makings of a seller's market all over it. Prices will likely be be high.

This is going to be an insanely interesting deadline. Either it severely underwhelms because no one wants to pony up, or it's insane what GMs are going to be willing to pay for subpar players.

My God if we gave up that much for an overpaid cream puff like that I'd just jump off a bridge and so would most other fans. Thank sweet baby Jesus that Hughes is in charge and would never do that and not the majority of you guys, cause damn.

What player has ever gotten any thing close to this type of value in a trade? I can only think of Phil Kessel, which was dumb, and Eric Lindros, the greatest overpay of all time as the only trades where 2 first round picks were traded for one player. You love giving up huge value even though Hughes has shown himself to be 1000x more shrewd. Rasmus Andersson is not worth anything close to that.

It's HF boards, when you offer lower value, it gets laughed at. Those are very high end offers yes. In the real world, you offer low and move up higher after you gain conversation traction. On HF boards, you can't start low because the nit pickers derail any genuine conversations.

There has been very little past examples of someone like Pettersson getting traded at age 26 with a 7 year term left and basically all prime years.

R Anderson is a RD and will have a lot of interest from 6+ teams.

I'd use our last retention spot on Dvorak and see if I could land a decent asset at this deadline, I agree it will be a sellers market. This would make room for Owen Beck which i think would give him valuable experience and a reward for playing such a mature polished game.

Could be an unpopular decision in the room though so I'd be wary of that, but it would be nice to get a decent asset for a player most of us see as a guy that doesn't produce much.

The mainboards would explode if you could wrangle a 1st in 2026 or 2027 for Dvorak in a tight market lol.

Yeah, it could back fire on us if EP40 is meh but he is a serious talent right at the beginning of his prime.

Where does Slaf and Dach top out at? Not sure. Your guess is as good as mine. In their primes, I have these two around 60 pts

That will be saved for Savard. Dvorak even with retention will not return much. Dvorak should stay so we avoid hauling pieces away from Laval's playoff run.

Habs are not after 3rd round+ picks at this stage. Dvorak with retention will not get a 2nd if that's what you are thinking?

I think Slaf can easily be a 65-75 point player on the regular. He's about to have back to back 50 point seasons at 19/20 while still figuring things out and getting his man strength.

Dach I think we need to upgrade on. I am not a fan of his toolset even when he is 100% healthy.

I doubt that they’ll be looking to sell players for futures unless they go on a big losing streak. If they trade Dvorak, I can see them trying a swap him for a better player.

Yeah i know I'd only trade Dvorak for a 1st or very high 2nd, otherwise we don't need any other assets. I only think that's possible because of what's shaping up to be an even tighter trade market than last year. There will be very little available and a super experienced center at $2.25 million will have more value than a 3rd for sure.

I think if we trade Savard it hurts the team much more than trading Dvo, it puts the pairings back in a blender and we just found stability. I'd rather not, even for a good asset, I think we have a good shot at the playoffs.

I only would consider trading Dvo because Beck could provide 80-90% of what he brings while we get another decent asset in the process. It is unlikely to happen though.

I agree Slaf could reach that level (65-75). Not sure he exceeds pt/game level but you never know.

I don't hate Dach but if we can get an upgrade, we should consider it.

I 100% agree with you about trades affecting the room. It's a delicate balance. We are in a push for the playoffs, so if we trade away Dvorak (replaced by Beck) and Savard (for sure a leader in the room), we need to add something to show that we support the players. They want to win. An easy trade that wouldn't cost much is a winger to upgrade on Newhook.

The picks we get from Dvorak and Savard would be greater than the assets to get a winger to replace Newhook. Beck would be an upgrade on Dvorak. Struble is a downgrade on Savard, though. Newhook becomes depth. In the end, we come out on top in both assets and team strength overall, IMO.

Don't even think about it. Yes, Teams are after depth at center all the time but even at 50% retention for Dvorak, the best we can get is a 3rd rounder IMO.

The only one we might get offered a 1st for is Evans. We need to let go the idea that we are hauling in more future picks as sellers for this deadline.

We already have two 1st, two 2nd's, three 3rd's, and two 4ths and our pool is loaded with B and B+ prospects.

For Slaf, I never expected him to be a PPG player. His size and ability to make space out there won't show up on the scoresheet sometimes. Last season, he made so many plays happen and was a real force out there. Come playoff time, his game will translate super well.

The only guy on your list who might be available is McLeod...because Buffalo and he's RFA this year.

But Buffalo will only trade him to make their team better and the Habs aren't interested in making their team weaker just to replace Dvorak.
I agree, all the names I mentioned would require overpayment in trade. Therefore, I think they will look for 1-2 years stop gap who would give our C prospects more time to establish. I guess they will extend Evans, so we would have Suzuki, Evans, plus one of Beck, Kapanen, Hage. I guess they will just try someone like Gourde, Namestnikov or maybe if they go wild Duchene (if he does not extend in Dallas).

Two mid first round picks and Newhook is an overpay for a signed top3 dman, in your opinion?

Yeah I'm just gonna have to disagree, I don't think you have a very firm understanding of real player values based on the trades you create. Dvo at $2.25 million has real value but he's arguably more valuable to us as a kind of self-rental.

Anyways I'm doubtful any of the trades posted in here happen, I expect us to stand pat at the trade deadline and KH tells the boys he thinks the team in the room is the one to get the job done. No point in taking part in the inflated prices this deadline is sure to be.

One for one, sure. But Vancouver would never do that.
Off course not.

And I'm not ready to give up on Slaf and pencil him as only a 2nd line winger.

Any trade between the 2 teams for me would need to fill needs for both teams.

Vancouver would need a temporary stop gap at center on the second line and they have been on record wanting to acquire a top 4 PMD.

Habs need a top 6 center.

So right off the bat, the base of the deal could be Dach and Matheson going to Van and EP coming to Habs. And of right now, don't think Van can see Dach as a proper stop gap on their 2nd line so a deal couldn't occur right now. But if Dach is keep getting his groove back on the second half of the season, I feel like it's a deal that could make sense for both teams.

Off course I think Habs would probably have to add a good prospect à la Mailloux or a pick to make the value more even.

Yes

Dvorak is not returning a late 1st or 2nd in any circumstance bud. The only value he brings is 4C and faceoff wins. Teams don't offer late 1st or 2nd's for a piece like this. Teams will be higher on Savard than Dvorak bud

I very much doubt NHL GM's are low on Dach like fans are. They know his true potential and are aware of injuries holding him back. Not like he is a good 1/1 offer but I think fans are guilty of being low on him. He's got just as much value as Cozens IMO. Numbers will be similar between these two in the next 5-8 years

Difficult to know because it's so early. I like Slaf a lot and I'd have him topping out around 50-70 pts range. Big range yes but that's where I see him falling.

Beast in the playoffs? He needs a lot more maturity and better puck management in key areas. Still on the road where you see very nice things and also see some blunders with his puck management.

I wonder if the Canucks would be open to Gallagher at 50% retention. Gallagher goes home for 2 more years at $3.25M.

* EP40 (7 more years @ $11.6M)
for
* Slaf (8 years at $7.6M)
* Dach (1 more year at $3.362M and then RFA)
* Gallagher (50% retention... 2 more years at $3.25M)

Slaf and Dach (with a new contract after next year) likely is much larger than EP40's cap hit.

$14.85M in for the Canucks and $14.21M for the Habs. This actually saves the Habs cap space starting when Dach needs a new contract.

I would absolutely hate this trade.

Man, that is awful.

Dvo at 2.25 should get you a 2nd. He's a 56% face off guy this year and sound defensively. On a contender, adding a 4th line center with that faceoff % and a good pker in a sellers market should yield a 2nd.

No I know Dach could still develops to a decent top 6 player with size but as of right now, he is not there and the jury is still out there as if he will get out of his funk. And for a team like Vancouver who wants to compete now, I don't think he is the solution as of now. But who knows, if Vancouver really wants to rapidly deal with the manner and Dach gets better and better as the season goes, maybe a deal can make sense at the deadline. But right now I don't think it does for Vancouver.

It's worth noting 65-75pts is EP40's floor.
