I am over the moon with the Demidov pick but I have to admit quite disappointed otherwise. It appears we are headed into next season with essentially the same roster as last year.

I really thought Hughes and Gorton were going to make a trade of significance this weekend for a young forward who would really help our team. I’m disappointed that hasn’t happened.
Agreed. Give the fans something to be excited for October 2024.

it's one thing not being competitive. It's a whole other thing giving our young forwards Rafael f***ing Harvey Pinard or the power donkey to play with.

And we do need to get more in a competitive mentality at some point.

We should be between 17th and 22nd in the NHL next season. Another bottom-5 finish is going to raise some questions and with good reason.
The top 6 will be CC-Suzuki-Slaf, Newhook-Dach-Roy. Who cares about the bottom 6 for now, this team will still suck next year. Next offseason is where things should get interesting. Hutson/Reinbacher/Mailloux with a full year of development and Demidov comes over. Armia/Dvorak/Petry are off the books and Anderson/Gallagher become easier to move/buy out.

I don't see why another bottom 5 finish would raise some questions. The only player we've drafted from these past 3 drafts who is guaranteed to be in the NHL this upcoming season is Slafkosvky, everyone else is still developing. The bottom 6 is also flooded with unmovable contracts.

He can't sit still. UFA is opening Monday, and trade market has some names that haven't moved.

He needs to add a top 6 player. But having Dach back healthy alone will move the needle.

Holtz stink and as sad as it is, we don't have a guy like Cotter to offer them
Ah, so Cotter is better for them than Harris or Barron?

Well at this moment here is our line up

Caufield-Suzuki-Slaf
Newhook-Dach-Roy
Gallagher-Dvorak-Anderson
RHP-Evans-Armia
Pezetta

Suzuki gonna have a long season
Considering how good Newhook was with Armia and either Roy or Gallagher, these lines look a lot better (but we know HuGo are going to target UFA's and trades - they won't come back with the same lineup):

Caufield-Suzuki-Slaf
Dvo-Dach-Roy
Gallagher-Newhook-Armia
RHP
-Evans-Anderson
Pezetta

The bolded are spots that could potentially be upgraded.

Roy has no business on a top-6 in the NHL.

You gotta go out there and target forwards on the UFA market. Apart from the defunct Coyotes, no other team made any majour move via trades yesterday and today. I am sure no UFA of significance will come anyways. And let's face it, nobody wants the likes of Dvo, Armia, Anderson, Gallagher. Another draft, another top 5 pick, be patient and in 2-3 yrs there might be something to cheer for.

No progression in 3 years would not raise some questions?

Come on. There's being patient and being dumb.

At some point this team has to move forward.

It’s time to take a step forward. Make the team slightly competitive so when Demidov joins in 2025-26, he propels them to a legit threat.

At some point you have to give the young guys currently on the team a good base to play with.

The destruction of the team began in the 90s. Gainey gave it back some credibility, but then went bonkers by acquiring a bunch of smurfs. The BargainBin era was all about plugging holes and win now mode. Is this progression you guys want?

A big physical bottom 6 forward makes more sense for the soft Devils than healthy scratch Harris or Barron who couldn't crack the worst RD depth in the NHL.
Roy has no business on a top-6 in the NHL.
Is this based on him being our best player on the 2nd line when he got placed there? The guy has played 23 NHL games and isn't even 21, how can you conclusively say he has no business being on a top 6 in the NHL. He's not some random plug like Belzile.

When one player drafted in these 3 years is guaranteed to make the team at the start of this season, I don't see why there would be questions. There will be more than 1 for the following season.

The guys who will take us to that next step need developmental time at their respective leagues. Acquiring players who likely won't make any drastic difference and will probably cost a lot in terms of assets (especially since we'd have to trade at least one of these guys) and cap hit isn't going to really help us in the longterm.

Rebuilds don't get completed in 3 years unless you add proven superstar NHL talent. I am confident that next offseason is where we will make our big splashes. We will have a ton of cap space, Hutson/Reinbacher/Mailloux/Demidov will likely be regulars on the team, Anderson/Gallagher will be easier to trade/buy out, and Dvorak/Armia/Petry will be off the books. More roster space, cap, and quality players on ELCs. We've got a ton of picks we can package too.

No, it's based on him being a total and complete headcase.

If you knew half of the stuff I know you probably would not even have him written down on the starting lineup next season.
