Unless VAN would like a package centered about quantity (they'd need to take back crazy salary to make it work) I wouldn't bother for EP or JTM.

Petterssons highs might be higher, but Suzuki is reliable, never injured, a fantastic leader creating a locker room atmosphere players coming in remark immediately. He's a culture setter and never pouts. Gervais had great words in his book for Suzuki. A Pettersson trade makes sense for other assets (Caufield, Dach, Beck, Hage, Mailloux). I don't think Vancouver would be interested though.
For Pettersson I’d go with Matheson, Beck + 1st

I think the salary matching of the trade is the easiest part. Dach Newhook and Matheson gets is done, or any of those 2 + Dvorak. They might want Dvorak contract in the package it since he’s expiring and they have to re-sign Boeser this year and Hughes in 2 years. All 3 of Dach, Newhook and Matheson would be useful to them.

The tricky part is if they can flip whatever players+picks+prospects we would send them somewhere else to replace Petey. They have their 1st (might be a good one this year), Lekkerimaki and Wallinder already as valuable chip trades. If we send them good picks+prospects on top of those 3 pieces they already have, they should have enough ammo to do a quick re-tool if they find sellers. NYI, Rangers, Buffalo, Calgary, Nashville, St. Louis or Detroit ??

Caufield? Why would we trade our goal scoring machine? After 30 years of starving for goals. At 11.6 million they can keep him. I agree Suzuki > Pettersson, it's not always about points.

I love the idea of a big gamble as much as the next guy, but Pettersson is too much risk imo. Ever since his contract extension last season his stats have taken a considerable nose dive and apparently he's been struggling with tendinitis.

If we made a trade for him and gave up multiple prime assets like Caufield/1st/Mailloux/Beck etc... and he ends up just being 60-70 point guy making 11.6 million, then that could single handedly sink our rebuild.

According to the deal but future second line of Pettersson, Laine and Demidov is tempting. Pettersson be a 100 point playing with those 2

Pettersson @ 3 million retained = 8.6 million

For:

2025 1st
2025 1st Calgary
Hage
Beck
Mailloux
2025 2nd

I would not deplete prospect pool like this for any player when the contending window is not even open yet, 6 good Games are not enough to make MTL a contender (fyi SJS just beat TBL too ;) )

VAN is my second favorite team and they d want NHL players rather than prospects given the fact that Demko and Hughes are in their prime.

Theoretically we don't need those prospects or picks, especially if we are solving our 2C problem for the next 5-8 years. I wouldn't give them any of our young roster players. If you're trading Pettersson it's probably time for a rebuild in Vancouver, might as well trade Hughes as well.

Demko plays hockey? ya i get it with Hughes, he's a great player (easily top 2 dman with Makar) but that team is basically a 1 man team, VAN is nothing without Hughes

No thanks to EP. We shouldn't chase players like that. We've kept the costs down for our first line, and Laine, demidov and hutson will need contracts soon. I get that we have the assets to afford him in a fair deal, but we should be targeting less expensive additions

You don't trade a 24yo franchise player you build around him. Hronek is a good physical 3D when healthy (overpaid still), Miller and EP are a good 1-2 punch. Demko is a very good goalie coming back from an injury. Add to that Garland Boeser Debrusk as good top 6 wingers, Joshua Blueger Sherwood as gritty bottom 6 guys, Soucy as good bottom pair D...

I don't see where it is Time for a rebuild. I think EP or Miller get traded in the offseason if they can't solve their issues which would allow cap Space to sign a guy like Bennett.

The most likely trade I see between both teams is Matheson to provide VAN with more puck moving. You put him next to Soucy for babysitting purposes in the Dzone ;)

Canucks are going to want now, not futures. That trade won't go. You be looking at a Pettersson deal build around Caufield. Or a Beck/Matheson combo.

I bet if it was up to Trochek he would be packing Pettersson bags now. But Miller age keeping him from doing that.

If I had a bet it be Miller and Kreider for JT.

Only thing that would make sense in terms of evening the money in/out as much as we can is to offer Dach, Newhook, and Matheson and offer both our 1st rounders (after the lottery) as the real sweeteners. Massive quantity package that is probably deeper than what Hughes/Gorton prefer but it certainly sets up the Canucks to remain competitive and hit with two solid picks likely in the 10-15 range. One will be probably 8-12 and the other is probably 12-18. Those two picks combined are worth a 5-10 range pick value.

Dach, Newhook, and Matheson = $11.14M.

Crazy 5 piece offer but it's something we can live without while we add a center to pair up with Suzuki. What do other teams offer for EP? Not sure. I have seen Barzal with small add and Cozens/Byram offers.

Just a friendly reminder that star players rarely go for what they’re presumably worth. I’ve lost count of how many HF meltdowns I’ve seen where Habs could’ve easily matched an offer for a star player but didn’t get them.

Doubt EP or Miller will go for anything close to what some of these proposals are giving away.

There is plenty of room to sign Laine, Demidov and Hutson and still fit EP in. If cap space is the reason not to trade for EP, I don't agree with the narrative.

* Savard, Armia, Dvorak, Matheson, Gallagher, Anderson = $28.23M
* Price = 10.5M (we didn't need his contract on LTIR to start the season)
* Cap will grow from $88M to $95M+ by the time Laine and Demidov needs raises. That's another $7M more (min)

That's $45.73M freed up in 2 more seasons. Yeah, Guhle, Slaf, and Hutson to get raises as well and even when you add Demidov and Laine, it still fits easily.

Habs are in a great salary cap situation and if we can trade for EP or anybody with a talent like that, we should. He fits the core age around Suzuki to Demidov and this should be our strategy. Adding pieces around Suzuki age or in between Suzuki/Demidov.

I think we should not trade for Pettersson, it is a huge contract and we should invest the money to RHD. Obviously, 2C is extremely important role in the team, but with little bit of patience some of Dach, Hage, Beck or even Kapanen might work out well for us.
For RHD, we are currently playing with Matheson, Carrier and Savard where none of them is a long-term solution, so you have. Savard should leave after this season, Matheson has one more year and Carrier is 28 with 2 more years, so we need at least 2 players to fill the spots. Reinbacher is injured, Mailloux is not progressing this season, Engstrom might play right even if he is a leftie.
RHD is a very rare commodity, between age of 24-28 there are just 38 players in whole NHL. We should be aiming someone like Nick Perbix, Will Borgen or Braden Schneider.

We have generous posters in here. Giving up assets left and right like candy.
Remember some offers for Patrick Laine last summer?

Slippery slope on EP40...................not sure if we should entertain at all. And then, the other side of the coin is make the guy happy by leaving a toxic show and get a 100pt player??
