1. EP is playing bad and has a monster contract
2. EP would cost the CH so many assets that hey have compiled, no thanks
3. KH needs a centre but not this way with VAN
4. So many posters here dissed the PL rumors and we only have up a D man and got a 2nd back
5. Just think of what posters here would do if we gutted the farm to get EP and he floats out there
6. This server would die
The risk is exactly that in trading Dach, Newhook, our two current 1st round picks and Matheson.

It's putting all your eggs in the same basket and makes the result of your trade extremely injury/health (mental or other) sensitive.

A .82 PPG player, presently for 11.6M per seems like a big risk, even one were to assume that the production level would likely increase a better environment.

If that's really what it takes to land Pettersson, Think another/better target might be out there for less.

he is sucking good time to buy for sure.
you could be right. so you guarantee IF KH paid prospects and picks that this will turn out well?
I know he is a good player, dont disagree.
Middle ground is deplete the farm for him is risky.
if the deal was reasonable maybe

I get the buy low deal
so what would you give up for him today?

I don't think we are depleting the farm though. We have very valuable futures in draft picks we can use. Picks that fall outside of the 7/8 year spread from Suzuki to Demidov.

Hypothetical roster if we are able to pull off the Dach, Newhook, Matheson and two 1sts for EP... Yes, it's a crazy 5/1 offer and appears very high but lets look at what we have if that trade happened.

Caufield / Suzuki / Slaf
Laine / EP / Demidov
Roy / Kapanen / Hage
Heineman / Evans / Beck

Mesar, Xhekaj, Tuch, RHP, Koivu

Hutson / Reinbacher
Guhle / Carrier
Xhekaj / Mailloux

Engstrom, Struble, BK

Monty, Fowler, Dobes

This is a very solid core with most assets locked up long term or under team control. Still plenty of future picks to come and cap space to use to improve even further.

I would think it being an episode of the Twilight Zone because there is no way Van decides to rebuild acquiring farm pieces for their #1 center. ;)

Same comment I made with Laine... He's not coming to an island by himself (like Drouin).

Can't believe some of you are finding reasons to say no to EP when we have the assets to acquire and something we can afford to spare.

If EP was playing as well as last year and the year before, it's 0% chance to acquire. But now that he is on a low trend.... Nah... he's not worth it . I swear some of you don't know how to comprehend the rollercoaster ride and it's always pump up at the high points and pump down at the low points. No middle ground whatsoever for some of you and it's strange
Leverage here would be with the acquiring team.........so we could ask about them to hold 3.6M per season and we pay him 8M at that point.........could be something every team acquiring will try.

It's odd that you would reference Laine at all in this conversation... EP's situation is completely different.

Wether or not EP is "worth" the risk (cost of acquisition + contract + internal impact) should he not return to a 100pt, top 5-10 C level of impact, is relative to our organizational situation (LT cap structure, roster need, market fit etc.).

It's quite obvious why it's a bad fit for Montreal to aggressively pursue him. That doesn't mean we shouldn't kick tires, but the odds that another franchise would have a much better risk/reward assessment and be willing to offer a package that we should not even consider, is quite high.

I mentioned Laine because the same BS was said... Montreal is the last place for Laine to be (False). I believe some of you are at it again with EP. Not worth it? Come on man. It's an opportunity because he is trending low. If it was last year, you would laugh in people's face at the notion of trying to trade for him... with a untouchable narrative so don't try

It's not "quite obvious" why he is a bad fit for Montreal. That is something you just made up

its the cost is all I worry about.
as I said I cant see Dach and Newhook being the 2 roster players going back.

I will be the 1st to say I was wrong. If your proposal was met, could turn out

On HF boards, you need to start high and then go low (which is my strategy). In the real world, you start low and move up higher as trade conversations gain traction. I tried the later for a while and it don't work on social media. Too many people out there spending energy to belittle and make fun of stuff.

If EP is actually going to be traded, this will be a bidding war. Regardless of any nit picking flaws people can find, there will be lots of team making offers which will drive the price up. Laine is comparable in terms of coming to Montreal and performing well but not comparable in terms of how many teams will be in on EP and the cost to acquire.

If the cost to acquire is lower than what I listed, that's a good thing! :)

Destroyed his own player?
Alvin had a press conference a few days ago where he repeated in not that much different words what Tocchet and Q. Hughes said a little earlier this month. At this point, the GM, Coach and team Captain have all said publicly that Petey has poor work ethic and is immature in how he deals with adversity and interpersonal conflicts.

We do have too many assets and can give a year's worth in draft pick without breaking a sweat, 2-3 prospect and even a couple of NHLer on top of it. We even have cap space.

We need very few players to complete the puzzle, maybe 2- 3 players.
EP would be one but we need 3 of them.

The price still need to make sense.....for both teams.....cause Vancouver is not a good trade partner, they won't be looking for our kind of assets, they'll ask for Caufield/Suzuki and since it won't work they'll maybe go after Slafkovsky/Guhle.....sure as hell they're not looking at a package of picks and prospects as it would be best for the Habs to move.

I just don't see the two teams being good trade partners at all.

I feel we have two holes. 2C and a top 4 RD. EP addressing the 2C and the top 4 RD can be addressed in the next 2 years.

I don't buy the Caufield/Suzuki narrative. Blues are not trading Thomas (for example) either. What team trades an asset like Suzuki who they developed and has a lower cap hit? That list is very low.

Best offers I have seen from other teams are:
* Barzal with small add
* Cozens/Byram

My offer trumps both. If the Canucks want more of a 1/1 or 2/1 trade, we are probably out because Dach is our only piece and he is not trending well at all. But when you add Dach, Newhook, Matheson (who keep the Canucks competitive) with two solid 1st round darts, I don't see why they would not consider it.

Interesting stuff. I'd be curious to see if EP is actually traded and what the return ends up being. Canucks need to decide before his NMC kicks in because after that, it's more challenging to find the right team and return from the teams EP accepts.

EP's best years might be behind him due to injuries, but his most expensive years are ahead of him.

Pettersson @ 3 million retained = 8.6 million

For:

2025 1st
2025 1st Calgary
Hage
Beck
Mailloux
2025 2nd

Two problems with this...

1) Pretty much $0 of cap hits going out and $11.6M coming in.
2) Where is the proven NHL assets? Good futures but Canucks will not gamble on all futures only.

Replace Hage, Beck, Mailloux with Dach, Newhook, and Matheson. Remove the 2nd.

1) No. Look again. In this deal I have Vancouver retaining 3 million to get him down to 8.6 for us.

2) I'm giving them rebuild assests. That team isn't winning anything or going anywhere.

EP's best years might be behind him due to injuries, but his most expensive years are ahead of him.

Our team doctors would be able to figure that out. Done at age 26? Doubt it very much. Same was said with Eichel.

I totally understand the concerns. What about the concern about waiting for Dach to be the player we think he can be and it taking years to find out? There is a risk there too right?

Do you think there will be another chance to add a player with EP's skill? Either through trade or UFA?

I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that this is an example of sarcasm.
I'm dead serious. What's wrong with it in your opinion?

The quote reply got messed up somehow.

Canucks will not be retaining for 7 years. You can forget about that idea.

I don't think they want to rebuild. I think they want to retool. My offer helps them retool and rebuild. It hits a lot of context for both sides which is how trades happen. A rebuild will be forced on them in about 3 years IMO.

Dach has far less potential than EP, clearly in my opinion, but he comes with a 3.5 million dollar contract that will soon expire.

The Habs have enough cap space and trade capital to acquire one great player, in my opinion. It does depend on who's available as you say, but my preference would be a young RHD or an old impact forward going for one last hurrah.

In fairness, I remember people thinking that Ovechkin was done back around 2011 or so when he got fat. He was in fact a lesser player then, he finished a season around -40 and was getting relatively few playoff minutes, he had a 13 year 9 million dollar contract and people thought he was done.

But he overcame.

The time to acquire great forwards is when they're on a low.
