Matheson will be dealt.... but probably at next years deadline, no?
His cap hit is low enough to be enticing to an ambitious team today.

Impatient fans who refuse to give players like MM a fair shake. "Perfection or you're garbage" is the idiotic stance too many Habs fans take
What’s a fair shake? Our team is bad, we’re defacto tanking. What do you want?

where are Matheson rumors coming from?
Despite my wishes to trade him a year ago, everything we've seen seems that MSL and MGMT love having him.
Matheson will turn 33 the first year of his new contract.....you cannot sign a one way d-man to a 6-7 year contract extension.

MTL says no. Frost is a one way player that needs to play high in the lineup and be fed minutes to be successful. Newhook could find success in a more limited role and that’s what we need him for.
Newhook is a basically Lehkonnen 2.0.. good to have in a playoff run as a depth player who can slot in wherever necessary for injuries.

Most people just want to capitalize on his value and don't see him in the long term plans with all the LHD and Hutson eventually taking over #1 PP.
Which is the the reality. He doesn't fit our core.. trade him btw now and TDL for a 1st rounder and a prospect back.

I'd trade for Frederick from Boston, then try and get Olivier. See what we can get for Savard and MM. Goon this season up, have some size for Demidov next year to say 'hi' if we need to. Target the underperforming teams for trades, or those who are contenders and may have an injury on the blueline in the near future. (Winnipeg etc)

Can't wait to get rid of Armia and Dvorak and get players here who care more than 2 nights a month

I'd be ok with extending Matheson for four years at 3D money.
That seems very unlikely given our depth at LD.

Guhle
Hutson
Xhekaj
Strubble
Engstrom

By the time Matheson starts his next contract, he'll be firmly bottom pair on the left side...

I'd be in favor of a 2 year deal at what he's making now, but more term or cap it would be hard to justify unless all 3 of X, Strubble & Engstrom falter considerably in their progression

More I think about it, more I keep returning to KK. Not even cause he played for us but more cause he would be a great fit. Depth-wise it would be amazing if you think about it. Decent size, some gritt, some skills, and given our troubles with centers, esp. the way Dach is struggling, KK could help since he can play on every lines.

Now I know maybe trading him for Dvorak is not attractive for them but Dvorak comes off the books next year. So it would be a weight lifted off their shoulders getting rid of KK's contract in a one on one trade. I mentioned Dvorak but it could be someone else.

I think Matheson is on the move by some point next year in an ideal situation. Meaning I really want to see Guhle play LHD as he can only play better going to his natural spot, and we need a RHD to do that.

I'm thinking Barron looks done here. So our only contenders to be top 4 RHD are Mailloux and Reinbacher. I don't see Reinbacher coming in next season and grabbing the top pair RHD spot after missing a year. So that leaves Mailloux with the only shot at it. Now if we can an Andersson, even just for next season, that would give Reinbacher and Mailloux another year of development be it at the AHL and /or NHL level. That would help give us a shot at the post season next year.

Most Jackets fans say Jiricek has been poor defensively during his NHL stints. That's not to say he can't or won't turn that round at some point but to think Jiricek could step onto the ice for our club and be an upgrade on anyone seems misguided. It would most likely be a "for the future" move.
It's as realistic as thinking Reinbacher will be an upgrade on anyone when he comes back
