Lou is looking for a vet LD as per Pierre Lebrun

That's because they're entire left side is injured. Pelech, Romanov & Reilly are all out. Pelech is out 4-6 weeks. Reilly is out indefinitely. Romanov apparently back at practice but non-contact. He's been out a couple of weeks.

They're playing 20 year old Isaiah George & a bunch of minor leaguers on LD, although apparently George is playing extremely well, though.

You trying to send them Matheson? Lol

The day we trade Matheson, it will be a addition by sustraction.

-Guhle will be back on LD, easier for him and less in vulnerable position to get drilled on his off side.
-Hutson will be on 1st PP wave. Enough said.
-no more Matheson brain farts.

Up to this point they have done a great job. If the team doesn't show some improvement this season what they do about it will be telling.
I wouldn't categorize it as great. Our D is a mess. Matheson-Guhle as plan A is horrible. If Hutson didn't make the team, we would have Savard and who else to play with them in the top 4? Barron?? Getting rid of Kova was not a good idea.

The forward group I would say they did a good job and were just unlucky. They also banked on Primeau, which is also fine as we needed to see what he was made of (swiss cheese, evidently). The D situation wasn't good though.

It would be ideal to give Guhle his 1st pairing LD spot and them just go with it. Bones on 2nd pairing and PP as you say. Still an issue with finding or solidifying the 3rd LD pairing. Arber has played a little better over the past week or so but hasn't locked it down.

Right side is the issue. With who's currently in our system, we're still stuck not having anyone that can fill this role. Savard should be on the 3rd pairing at this stage of his career. Struble is a 3rd pairing guy. Barron just cannot play 2nd pairing with Lane as both are weak defensively and take too many risks.

Ideally, we find a solid veteran RD who can hold the fort until Mailloux makes the team next year and Reinbacher, either later that year or the year after that.

Habs should!!!

But Hughes is probably asking for an eyeball, arm and reproductive organs to part with Matheson.

If they want to trade LD for RD, I'd take either Pulock or Mayfield. They both age with Matheson, although Mayfield is 2 years older while Pulock is same age.

Dobson is only 24, but isn't off to a great start (only 6 pts, -5). Apparently he's been pretty atrocious defensively according to the post on trade board. He's RFA this summer.

I doubt Lou wants to do that. He's probably looking for a depth LD for picks.

-Xhekaj and Struble will play a bit more and will probably make less mistakes on average than Matheson

But he's a veteran who plays 25 minutes a night!!!!

Who cares if he's a trashfire defensively during those minutes? He plays them god dammit!

I care, and you should too lol.

I rather distribute his minutes through 3 pairs of dman than having a trashfire dman trying to defend playing 25 minutes a game

Yeah my post was sarcasm and dunking on guys who think he is a pillar of our blueline for no other reason than because he's 30 and from Montreal.

Trust me I do care. I wanted him gone in the offseason.

If it was just depth, Lou would look at the waiver wire. That's what he did in November last year (claimed Reilly). Pelech was injured last year too...and the year before...and before...

Their LD is basically Romanov.

And Habs don't need to swap Matheson for a RHD, that can be two different trades.

Yeah, they don't need to do it, but it would be a good hockey trade. We need a veteran RD.

Which is +$11.4m. But, the total amount of contracts ending for Montreal is $15.853m and we get another $4.3m removed in retained salary (Petry & Allen end this summer). That's a total additional space of $8.8m. Add another $4m for the projected cap. That's $12.8m in space.

The only players that need signing are Heineman & Struble. That's it. Maybe Evans if we want to re-sign him. We also have one more year of Price on LTIR.

We can easily sign or take on a $6m-$8m contract on D.
Yes and they can also trade half of Anserson's contract and but out Gallagher this summer or most likely summer of 2026.

I no longer see Gallagher as a buyout candidate. He's playing too well. They'll probably keep him. If Gallagher keeps it up, he could be tradeable at 50% ($3.25m). Gallagher has a full NMC.

He & Anderson both have 2 years left.

Don't think it's worth the additional 2 years to buy either of them out.

If we can't find better players to replace them, there is no point in buying them out. Unless we weaponize the recaptured cap space. But then again, the cap is rising and that cap space won't be as valuable as 2 years ago.

Given our already youthful roster, I am not too enticed to make it worse by throwing Laval kids into the fire before they are ready for prime time.

I agreed with you. Why people want to buy out Gally contract? We still have time before we need to sign Hutson and Demidov. We are not short on money.

Dvorak and Armia contract also end this summer.

I'd do Matheson for Pulock to be honest.

Don't know what a deal including those 2 would look like though.

I'm personally not the biggest fan of acquiring Jiricek. Moreso given how our prospect pool is shaking-up at the moment.

Having watched Jiricek play a lot for HC Pizen in his draft year when we didn't know where we'd draft, and also for the Cleveland Monsters in the AHL since, I feel that a lot of Jiricek's attributes as a defenseman; the amazing shot from the point/ability to find seams to shoot through, the mix of great size, physical play, skill, as well as solid transition and puck-possession play, all of that is comparable to our own Logan Mailloux.

As such, I think that Jiricek and Mailloux would occupy the same "chair" if we had both in our system, meaning that one would make the other completely redundant/trade fodder to fill other needs.

Now, if we start to nitpick we can easily catch some pretty marked differences in the two players' toolsets.

Jiricek is a better passer, a better thinker of the game, also slightly bigger than Mailloux with more reach, and better angling along the boards. I also feel that Jiricek has less breakdowns against the cycle, and that he boxes-out his man and blocks passing lanes a bit better than Mailloux as of now.

But he's also not nearly as smooth-skating as Mailloux is, hasn't shown the same progression as Mailloux in the last year or two (an important factor in my mind), and I also personally don't think Jiricek's upside is actually all that much higher than Mailloux's if we get right down to it.

So yeah, simply put I feel it would be a mistake for the Canadiens to try and acquire Jiricek considering that we already have Mailloux and that the trade package we'd need to put forward to get him would most likely include players we DON'T want to trade, or our first-round pick this year, which we likely want to trade even less.
who would you take if Canadiens could do a 1 on 1 Mailloux vs Jiricek

Yay or Nay

People are complaining that we dont have enough vet that care and bring a "all in" attitude.... I certainly hope that they dont want to trade or buyout Gally. His overpaid, yes, but MTL does not need the cap space right now. So you keep him if he continues like he playing right now.
