If we can't find better players to replace them, there is no point in buying them out. Unless we weaponize the recaptured cap space. But then again, the cap is rising and that cap space won't be as valuable as 2 years ago.

Given our already youthful roster, I am not too enticed to make it worse by throwing Laval kids into the fire before they are ready for prime time.
could you expound on us potentially weaponizing the recapture space, please?

Everything has been setup for this summer. This has been known for 2 years. Dvorak & Armia's contracts end. We can replace them with Beck & Tuch.

Savard's & Primeau's contracts also end. Primeau is still an rfa. We'll see how his year goes, but he's someone we can let go as we replace him in the system with Fowler.

The D is still an unknown, though. We could use a replacement for Savard, but the D class this summer isn't great. We need Reinbacher to stay healthy & make the team next year.
Who's spot is Tuch taking next year? Or do you see Hugjes making a trade to create a spot for him?

Caufield- Suzuki - Slaf
Laine - Dach - Demidov
Gallagher - Newhook - Anderson
Heineman - Kapanen - Roy
Beck? Evans?

Even without Dvo and Armia we're looking pretty full.

If they want to trade LD for RD, I'd take either Pulock or Mayfield. They both age with Matheson, although Mayfield is 2 years older while Pulock is same age.
Both contracts dont look good. Pulock is 6,15M for four more seasons till age 35.
Mayfield 3,5M for 5 more seasons till age of 37. They barely stayed healthy for full season.
I would go for Dobson ;)

I meant it as in the cap space we're gaining by buying-out Anderson/Gallagher. It's probably not the most appropriate term to describe it.

If you're buying out those guys, you're getting cap space and roster spots. If you're not using that cap space, what's the point? Using those spots to add more rookies isn't appealing to me.

Some players have a better agent than others ... or an agent who has some private pictures of GMs.

Roy is not a 4th liner, that is Tuch's spot.

And Beck is overplaying Roy in the AHL, much better compete level. I personally think that Roy is trade bait.

And Newhook is a complementary winger at this point. He also kinda lost his spot with Demidov coming in. Not sure what to do with him. Moving Anderson might be the solution.

Sissons, Carrier and L'Heureux for Mailloux + 2nd Round (PIT) 2025 + 4th round pick (BOS) in 2025 + Dvorak + Farrell/Kidney

Then trade Savard at deadline to recoup picks lost.

Do you do it?

Ah this is where I think KH will need to show he's a top tier GM. Of all the players you listed, only these are penciled in for next year

CC - Suzuki - Slaf
Laine - Dach - Demidov
Gally - [Evans] - XXX
XXX - XXX - XXX

I put Evans in square brackets because he's UFA, and that we should resign him if the price is right. I think that Beck and Kapanen can/should play in Laval next year.

So that means that all the other players need to find a "chair" and to be honest, of all of them, none are typical 3rd/4th line players. As such, I would hope that KH can package some of them for upgrade on the roster (i.e. Newhook + Roy vs 25yold-ish 2C).

Odds are that Anderson can't be traded, so that one less spot to fill... meaning that there is room for Tuch to get a job on the 4th line, but also for KH to get some vet/sandpaper.

CC - Suzuki - Slaf
Laine - [Trade] - Demidov
Gally - Dach - UFA
Tuch - Evans - Anderson

Gallagher's actual salary for the last season of his contract will be 4M, so they won't save that much cap hit by buying him out.

If you account for his replacement's salary, his cap hit will pretty much just be spread over double the years left on his contract.

Better hope he continues to play at this level for 2 more years.

Why is L'Heureux not a need? We don't any top 6 guys or prospect with that kind of edge. Sissons has 1 year left after this one. Perfect type of stopgap with a ton of experience and respect across the league. Carrier 2 more years after this one at a reasonable cap hit. He's a top 4D and a righty

I would counter lack of 2nd line able to drive puck possession & offense has had the adverse effects of more focus on Suzuki line by opponents and more pressure & time defending in Dzone thus increasing the probability of turnovers & giving up scoring chances

MSLs “concept” is all about applying pressure on the puck to ensure Habs own possession time.

With no possession threat being imposed by 2nd line the entire concept crashes & burns… which seems to be the case.

2nd line of Newhook - Dach - Armia has the worst +/- on the team… I’d say that’s more than a coincidence

The 2nd line issues are basically Dach not being able to be the trusted center we think he can be. So yeah, Team D/Youth and lack of center depth behind Suzuki are the biggest issues. Our scoring and PP/PK is actually improved IMO. We are letting in too much soft goals which kills team momentum and confidence.

We don't need to unload Gallagher. Cap issues during his term left is not a problem at all and our cap frees up even more after this season. Potential cap issues comes when we have to extend Demidov, Hutson, Dach, Reinbacher etc.

Matheson
for
Girard +

Habs can retain on Matheson to help the Avs cap and they can go after big adds at the TDL. Girard comes to the Habs to replace Matheson (short term) and then you wonder... what is the add on top of Girard combined with cap savings for the Avs? How much is that extra cap space worth it for them? They don't have their 2025 1st but we can take the 2026 1st. Anything less than a 1st added does not make it worth it for us.

We dont need top 6W. If he was a C, then I would say that this is more interesting. I'm ok with Carrier and Sissons to a certain extent, but not at the price of Mailloux and Pit's 2nd (almost 1st).

Roy isn't a 4th line player. That's Tuch's spot.

Newhook won't play center, Beck will.

We'll see how they adjust the lineup as both Beck & Tuch are making pushes to get into the lineup this year. If we trade Armia, Tuch is definitely getting a good look.

Team needs to work on acquiring 3 veteran 4th liners that are stapled on that line imo, it's something we've been lacking for probably a decade

I would venture to say that neither Newhook and Roy have a future with this team.

I no longer see Gallagher as a buyout candidate. He's playing too well. They'll probably keep him. If Gallagher keeps it up, he could be tradeable at 50% ($3.25m). Gallagher has a full NMC.

He & Anderson both have 2 years left.

Don't think it's worth the additional 2 years to buy either of them out.
I have serious doubts that Gallagher keeps this up, but Anderson needs to be gone this offseason. It's moreso about the roster spot he takes up than the cap hit, he provides absolutely nothing.

Might be caused by all the people all asking for skillz and the team ending up with nobody with the skillset for the 4th line...
