Trade Proposal Thread #88: 2024-25 Season

Why the other vet D as depth? You don't trust Struble?

Not that I don’t trust, I don’t think he’s that good. Vet D depth always comes in handy. Overall, I’m not impressed with thier D youth outside of Lane, Guhle, and Rein. The rest are all blah.

Yep. They have to improve the D core this summer by adding quality vets if they want any chance of being in the mix.
agree they need a right-handed shot
They can't rely on Orville redenbacher to be this stud defenseman when he hasn't played half a dozen games in the NHL
Or 20 games in the AHL

So this scenario you proposed doesn’t really happen basically ever

Not sure how you get from a to b there but if we only want to keep it habs related and the question is to give a recent example, I don't think we have to look too far back. See what has been said in the Laine threads with respect to a contract extension.

“I would trade Matheson + picks (CGY first/MTL first 2026) and prospect (Roy/Struble/Beck) for a RHD prospect NHL ready.”

You have to give to get but Beck may not need to be included (cost controlled middle six C is very valuable, esp. if Dvorak is let go and Evans signs elsewhere).

Also, if that CGY pick is 11th OA or thereabouts, I would rather make the pick and offer something else.

On that note, in a recent article published on The Athletic website, several NHL journalists came together to propose realistic transactions for each of the 32 teams, in anticipation of the trade deadline.

It was Arpon Basu, a journalist assigned to covering the Canadiens' activities, who took charge of this exercise to represent the Montreal organization.

Here is his proposal:

In Montreal: David Spacek

In Minnesota: Joel Armia

And this^ is why the Montreal hockey media is dead.. quite frankly, HF is far more a reality than anything LaPresse or The Gazette could publish.

Dobes needs to play, and the AHL is where that will happen. Hughes is fine, but we risk missing out on a real solution. G have been traded already, and the options are slim. We can't keep playing Monty every game. I also understand you dont think chicago has interest. Keep repeating it. The fact is, we need a proper 2G. We didnt bring in a vet D for nothing. Management wants to see progress and wants to support the kids.
Probably waive Primeau when Fowler signs. Dobes or Hughes called up

He small. I would try for Marrelli instead. Watched Generals game, he's got a chance. Chesley try to get also.

We didn’t acquire an anchor contract, the discussion is about a proposed and hypothetical extension. My point is there hasn’t really been the case the Habs have really ever acquired a player who (1) came with great hype and fanfare and (2) had an anchor contract that ever got in the way.

Arpon Basu is like a barnacle. After all these years he’s incredibly bad at his job, I don’t think he even really understands the athletic and sporting dynamics of hockey.

That said, not sure if that’s a bad trade or not. We’ve heard good things about Spacek Jr… hope he is more fit than his father.

But Spacek-Hamrlik was a great pairing for the Habs.

Minnesota absolutely says no

If we do trade Evans, unless we can get a 1st I don't want more picks

I would target 2nd/3rd round RD and C prospects drafted in the past 2-4 years who have been progressing well

Would you trade....

Nick Suzuki
Alex Newhook
Jayden Struble

for

Elias Pettersson
2nd round pick 2025
Not trading Suzuki for a guy with a larger cap hit and less production than Suzuki

If Pettersson was a 100pt player still, then you can see the upside. But he’s not remotely that guy, and maybe won’t be ever again. So we’re not paying to downgrade.
