I don't think the Habs should be looking at top6 wingers.
Well i would not hold my breath on this one him but signing Rantanen would mean we could use one of Caufield or Slafkovsky to get another center or a top 4 RHD

Getting a top 10 forward in the league without giving up assets is a no brainer for me, whether it's a center, a winger or a D.

Rantanen could be available (13M-14M/year) ... So how about:
Laine - Suzuki - Rantanen

Rantanen played C when MacKinnon was out long term, didn't he?
It would be the most Montreal thing I can think of!
You have to assume Laine stays for max 6.5M for that to happen. It's fun to dream!

Slaf - Rantanen - Demidov
Caufield - Suzuki - Laine/Dach (whichever is worth a damn in 2 years)

Schaefer(!) - Guhle
Hutson - Reinbacher
Xhekaj - Mailloux/Engstrom

Realistically though, I see no particular incentive for him to even look at our offer.

I mean he's only 23, and every player moved out of Buffalo has done fairly well in their new organizations if not taken huge steps up (Reinhart, Montour & Mittlestadt).

Chances are high Buffalo is looking at it only because Cozens is signed to $7.1m contract for the next 6 years. They don’t want to pay that if he's only a 40-50 pt guy (currently his pace is 38 pts for this season). He's averaged 51 pts over the last 3 years.

To be fair, Buffalo doesn't seem to be able to judge their own players properly. Like at all.

Cozens isn't great, but he's just under 49% on the dot.

He's above Evans and just below Suzuki.

Obviously it's the cost and if Buffalo is actually looking to deal him, I'd hope the Habs are all over him.
I just think it needs to be pointed out that the Sabres were all set for Cozens to be the 2C and it doesn't seem like they are confident in him being a center (which makes sense with his hockey IQ being very questionable), especially at that contract.

Maybe, but he's taken the most feceoffs on the Sabres, so they must like him.

1st in PP fsceoffs by almost 70

2nd for faceoffs shorthanded. 7 behind Mcleod, 14 ahead of 3rd
2nd in defensive zone draws.

They use him a lot on the draw. Now, whether thats because they dont have anyone else is another question.
Who would he play over?
Pezzetta.

If he did play
.

A blind squirrel once found a broken clock when Monty was claimed off the wire.

The other times I can remember when the Habs got lucky before that, were with Kovacevic and Byron. It can happen that a player off the wire is worthwhile but rarely of the caliber of a Monty.

If the Habs are not in a playoff spot come February they have to sell Armia, Evans, and Savard. I hope Hughes does not think for a moment to retain them. I think Dvorak won't have an audience at all so he'll likely stay put.

They can up the more-or-less hopeless AHLers like Farrell and Kidney and rip to the end of the season.

Byron was very good too until he stupidly accepted that fight.

1000%. Montreal shouldn’t become the island of misfit hockey journeyman. Have a ton of depth on the farm and assets + cap to trade for superior players. Enough waiver pickups and get some real talent they desperately need to add.

Pezzetta's role is not something Nylander can do. Having Nylander on the 4th line brings nothing (except maybe a detriment).

Folks, please get this simple idea in your head:

No waiver pick up will fix this team.just stop with the constant waiver watch

Fix? No. Gain a good free asset? Possibly.

If there is a claim that could be a Byron, Montembeault or Kovacevic (Fabbro comes to mind), they should do it..

He has 3 years left after this year and the young centers Montreal has who could be #2 centers....Hage and whoever they draft this year will be ready in maybe 3 years.
I don't know who your source is but i'm pretty sure he has indeed 4 years left after this one.

Habs didn't want to give this term to Marchessault last summer so i don't think they will for Kadri either. It doesn't fit with their upcoming window.
