First order of business is a proper backup goalie. We have some winnable games coming up on back to backs:

Dec 20/21: Wings twice
Dec 28/29: Cats/Bolts (yikes)
Jan 3/4: Hawks/Avss
Jan 10/11: Caps/Stars

We need a backup that can at least give us a chance against the Wings, Bolts, Avs and Stars.

no we do not
need tougher players to play against.
Are you serious? On the same page(previous comment) you are talking about Frank Nazar. A 5ft9 player. I prefer to be patient and give Dach one more year over adding another small forward in our top 6. Do you honestly believe Nazar would have a great impact with us? On our already small team?

Let wait a little bit before calling Dach a bust.

Need a 2nd line centre
KH has some really work to do
Need a top-6 C, whether first or second line. Just not limiting the size of a potential trade, the quality of a draft pick we end up getting, a potential UFA pick-up, or the unexpected development of a prospect already within the system; Hage, or a player like Demidov getting transferred to C, for example.

Also need a bonafide top-4, shutdown RHD who can support the play offensively, at least in transition, someone to pair up with Hutson. Reinbacher is a D projected as such, but the injury situation has the jusynout on him reaching that ceiling? Still, even with Reinbacher panning out, unless Mailloux becomes a legitimate top-4 option, we still lack a another top-4 RHD.

We also need another solid G who, at the very least, can be another cog in a platoon G situation with Montembeault.

Montembeault -- especially with the work load this season and the inadequate D in front of him -might prove capable of a starter role, but I believe he might be just an average starter at the NHL level. If that's the case, we need a higher percentage of wins from a backup than we normally would need.

If anything, this season allow us and team management to narrow the "needs" moving forward. Now, what MTL is missing is also something a lot of other team need and which is in short supply. I think fans should remains patients as these holes are hard to plug.

Lots of work for KH

Hagens/Misa/Pray for Beck
Pray for Reinbacher/Mailloux or get that in LD Schaefer
Fowler

KH said multiple times that accumulated draft picks will not necessarily be used to draft, but also for trades, and he specifically went as far as talking about overpayment to plug holes.

I think it would be time to overpay for someone like Andersson who would truly plug a hole, not only now, but also be part of the future core at 26yo.
so far only newhook he used that theory for I am correct?

you'd think it'd be possible to get an upgrade on the cheap. what are some available targets?

We can just waive Primeau and have Dobes as backup. We're not in compete mode anyhow.

So what's the plan with Evans?

What's the most you'd be willing to give him, and do you risk hanging on to him this trade deadline only to have him walk in the summer?

Say Evans starts negotiations at 4m x 4 years, do you walk?

I think we'll extend him at around 3.5x4. Trenin just got 3x3.25 and then you have guys like Kampf/Girgensons who got 4 years at 2.5 as low end comparables.

The habs probably can't afford to lose two whole bottom 6 C's with the UFA market being so hopeless, especially if there are still question marks on Dach by season's end.

I'd counter with 3.25x4 and hopefully settle in the 3.5-3.6 area. It's probably not worth the trouble of finding another elder statesman bottom 6 C to help the kiddies along when we've already got one at home.

Isn't Quebec's health care system already burdened? Now you want Hab fans to remain patients. What if the doctor tells them to leave the hospital?

4m x 4 I actually run.
We need to see how good Owen Beck can be with NHL players before we decide on what to do with Evans.
I think we have far more important priorities than signing a player who is likely to be a redundant piece in the not too distant future.
If Laine remains healthy this season we HAVE to be working on an extension. That would be like our high end UFA splash.
No painting ourselves into corners with bad contracts for aging 4th liners thank you very much.
