Yeah, exactly. Matheson is terrible enough 5 on 5 defensively, he should be nowhere near any situation where we have one less player. That's the upside of doing this.

Trouba is better defensively than Matheson. I'd argue pretty much every D in the NHL is better defensively than Matheson but I've rehashed these points before and no one wants to read that again.

I'd say he's just as good as Savard and would be a welcome vet addition to mentor the young guys.
Trouba is far from being the dmen he used to be, that's why the Rangers has tried to move him since the end of last season.

My comment is more regarding trading Matheson for something we have a dire need for. Can we improve the W? sure, but this is not an area of concerns for now. If Matheson is traded, may as well to fix a problem, not make a marginal improvement.
My thinking was that we want a 1st or futures for Matheson anyhow. I'm not sure we can trade him for a clear improvement anywhere. NY is not really a good partner for trading him.

Think Petry when Habs reacquired him only to trade him to Detroit. He was just an asset coming in and gone.

He could end up simply being an asset.
I get it, but I don't think it's worth the risk.

Taking a guy and trading him 9 days later like we did with Petry is much different in the offseason then it is during the season. Does Trouba suit up while we work on trading him, does he sit out and publicly demand a trade? It's about the worst possible time for this type of distraction even if Trouba is professional about it.

Second we would almost certainly be spending our last retention spot on this hypothetical trade, meaning we can't retain at the deadline to say improve the return on a Savard trade, or to be a 3rd party broker and also get an asset. So there's an opportunity cost to think about and it's not just a free asset.

There's too much downside to acquiring him just to try and trade him.

A three-way trade for Trouba in order to hold back salary could facilitate the move for the Blueshirts.

MONTREAL (2025 first round pick from NYRs + 2025 2nd round pick from third team in exchange for whitholding Cap off of TROUBA's contract))

TROUBA TRADED AT HALF PRICE TO THIRD TEAM FOR WHATEVER NYRs DEAL WITH THAT TEAM.

Trouba wouldn't even set foot in Montreal.

Really hope he goes to Detroit. Would be hilarious considering how shit they are offensively to see him change absolutely nothing. It would fit with whatever Yzerman thinks he’s doing.

After the successes of Monahan and Laine, I'd love RD Trouba to come to Montreal with a pick attached - then get a second pick at next year's TDL. Just like Monahan.

Trouba could fill the Kovacevic role short term.
