Probably because they already have 7 healthy Ds and they still want to give chances to Barron.
They're gonna have to cut ties soon because he hurts the team in more ways than one.
How many more chance does Barron need? We need a vets at defense. Dante Fabbro being 26 years old and RHD has perfect for us. His contract also end in 2025. So 0 risk with him.

If we wanted, we should have drafted him at 26 and not Mesar

If I’m his agent, I’m telling him to test the FA market. Many teams will be after him
Olivier I can see getting 3+ , maybe 4.

I'd pay 3.25 for him and be fine with him.

He could also get extra for the commercials he'd be in given he's from here and would be an instant fan favourite

If the Preds are blowing it up, I think ROR would be a great addition for the Habs. A reliable 2C, perfect centre for a team with young wingers. Likely losing Evans and Dvorak at some point so they need a catalyst for the PK.
Even though he doesn't have any trade protection I don't think he would be happy in Montreal. You don't really want a veteran player who is unhappy with all the young players around him. The reason I say this is that he said a reason for leaving Toronto to go to Nashville is to live under the radar.

Yet, as a father of young children, O'Reilly does appreciate the ability to take his kids to local rinks without the attention suddenly shifting his way, even if a few Nashvillians do recognize him.
"You do kind of fly under the radar," O'Rielly said. "At this point in my career, I think I enjoy that, to be able to spend more time with my kids, more family time."

Monahan and Kovacevic should still play with the Habs.
For sure yes, but you would end up with a bunch of cry babies crying about Dach and Barron not getting enough ice time to demonstrate they don't suck.

At least now they're free to try as hard as they can.

Keep enjoying Barron and Struble…. Good luck !

Finally someone has confidence in him enough to play him on a top 4 , 20 minutes a game.

Maybe you're right, but I never found him to be anything special here. I can't see how the coaching staff could give top 4D minutes to someone who was getting beat to the outside like he was with 6D responsibilities. Good for him if he's turned his career around during a contract year, but he's an outlier if he keeps it up. The Lehkonen trade I find is way more annoying.

Both were bad trades. Of course, Lehkonen’s is the worst Hughes made so far.

Dobson would be a godsend for this team and I'd pay handsomely for him.
He should be target No. 1 for us. We have bunch of assets to use and I would not mind if we even overpay little bit. We can include Matheson, prospect and pick. Isles are so mediocre, he might even consider the move.

The feeling was trade Kov to give Mailloux more ice time. Look at him now. I would have kept Kov cause big physical Ds that can play hockey are rare. Hell look at Jack, he's still trying to learn the ropes. Generally the Habs have not the most physical Ds. That was a stupid move. One of the few instances where MB was better than Hughes.

He didn’t play all too physical though, and his actual performance was not really moving the needle. He’s up for a payday as a UFA and we had at least two rookies very close to the lineup.

Cutting Kovacevic loose wasn’t a bad idea, besides, it was a favour to him too.

The bad idea was acquiring Barron in the first place and it was compounded by sticking with Barron despite his lack of growth and development. He’s afraid of contact! There’s not much you can do with someone with average talent and minimal physicality.
