Weird by the Sabres since they already have Power and Dahlin. I wonder if they flip Byram elsewhere?

Yeah. Ottawa's a cautionary tale of loading up on left shot D-men. I'm also not sold on Byram, I'd rather have Mittelstadt. But Buffalo was in a bind after paying Thompson and Cozens and then having Mittelstadt outplay both of them in a contract year. Plus they're loaded with forward prospects.

Jeez nice trade buffalo and col.

Wish the Habs could do something like that.

We don't need to, we already have Mittelstadt at home.

Wow well I was dead wrong about the Avs failing to add a center. Had a feeling Byram would get traded eventually. I don't understand this move for the Sabres.

True, but we still need to to it again. Problem is that MTL does not have a Bryam-level D to offer

Well, I’d say Guhle isn’t tremendously off base but it’s not someone we’d want to trade for Casey Mittelstadt. Lol

Would you trade Guhle for him when we already have Dach? I wouldn’t. Not even close.

We do have Guhle if we really believe in Hutson, Xhekaj and Struble/Harris/Engstrom. Or if we pick another defenceman this draft.

I really like that move for both sides. Buffalo has a ton of forward prospect depth and can replace Mittelstadt in the aggregate, and Colorado still has so much skill with Makar/Toews/Girard and desperately needed a real 2C. Buffalo gets a ceiling raiser and Colorado gets a desperately needed floor raiser.
Well said. This is one of those rare trades where the transaction involves highly valued, young rising stars that addresses the needs of their respective new teams.

So the Avs clearly have done some upgrading of their lineup. Wondering how this impact the arms race

Just a bit to early to trade Guhle. as you say some other could replace him, but far from any garanties right now.

no. for sure. but a Bryam-level D also means one that is "available" for a trade. Right now, MTL can think of trading Matheson, Savard, Kova, Harris and maybe Struble. none of them have the appeal of Bryam.

Damn. That’s one deep defensive unit. With Landeskog potentially coming back, that’s dangerous.
They just traded Bown Byram for Casey Mittlestadt.

Byram has a thick record of concussions.

Still has a high value due to potential and age. But you are right that Buff is taking quite a risk here.

If the Flyers didn't waive RyJo I figured Allen for RyJo made sense given that their goaltending has been horrific with Hart gone

I would have no interest in a player who has had a number of concussions at his age. Just like no interest in Drysdale since he is always hurt.

Having all your top 4 dmen be left handed seems like a terrible idea. Byram has really declined since the Cup run and is extremely injury-prone. Mittlestadt finally became the player the Sabres hoped 6 years after being drafted, and in his 7th year he's proving that last year wasn't an anomaly. I really don't understand how the Sabres don't get more here or at least trade him for a RHD.

They seem to be building a good blue line. And with their young forwards like Peterka, Quinn, Cozens, and Benson, as well as Thompson, Savoie and Kulich coming up, they feel they're probably in good shape up front and this was a chance to strengthen their back end even more.

Their D now consists of two 1st overall picks and one 4th overall pick.

I suspect this year is going to go down as the trade deadline with the most extensions and the least trades in NHL history. We aren't even seeing the AHL level players on NHL contracts to boost affiliates teams trades.

The market must be crazy expensive or the contender GM extremely cheap...maybe both...for it to have no velocity.
Unless you consider the TDL the last hour before the deadline i'd say it's a crazy TDL so far. For me the TDL is like the last week before the deadline.

I can't believe Colorado traded Byram!
Why that was the logical thing to do.

He probably wanted more money then the Sabres could afford (they have a lower internal cap).
