If I had to guess I'd say it was Ceci.

It's definitely Ceci. He's on their bottom unit, and sucks big time. At $3.25m for a RD, he's still over paid. He's definitely who they want to upgrade.

He has another year on his contract. He's a cap dump, and they'll have to pay to do it.

That's what I was saying, you can't offer a 1st and a cap dump, when just taking Ceci deserves a 1st.

Evans and Kovacevic to Edm for a 2nd and prospect plus foegle as a cap dump. Edm can’t afford much salary but it would give them some depth and good pk players
is foegle still a cap dump? He's on pace for over 40 points over 82 games. That's good production for his salary.

I’d take Holloway, Ceci and a 2nd for Savard. Always liked Holloway and I think he just needs a better situation and more opportunity.

I think the offer would be more Holloway + Desharnais for Savard, 50% retained.

But are the Oilers ready to throw in the towel on Holloway?

I think any sane Hab fan would love this trade but is so outrageously lopsided that it can not be considered a reasonable proposal.

Edmonton are not trading Holloway and a 2nd for a slight upgrade on Ceci.....I mean, I hope they would but the definitely would not

I am not sure what the Jiricek situation is currently like in Columbus but last I heard he was very unhappy. I would absolutely explore trading Hutson for him if they appear receptive to the idea. It is difficult to say with Hutson as some teams may really love him and some may think that he is not NHL material.

That would be the base of the trade offer and I would be willing to add in order create the possibility of having a future RD of:

Reinbacher
Jiricek
Mailloux

potential pairings:

Guhle - Reinbacher
Xhekaj - Jiricek
Struble - Mailloux

That is a Stanley Cup recipe in the making and we would still have plenty of assets to trade for an impact, scoring winger which imo is all we would be lacking if Dach can come back and flourish.

Slight upgrade? Ceci is horrendous and has negative value. Savard is far better. I think he would help Nurse tremendously on that 2nd pairing.

It’s basically Ceci and a 2nd to take his contract, Holloway for Savard.

I am not a big Ceci fan and I do prefer Savard but Ceci is not horrendous and imo Edmonton is trading a #5/6 for a #4/5 with almost identical contracts. Holloway alone is overpayment as I think he is on the verge of breaking out and his relative value is a mid first rounder which is more than Savard is worth. Throwing in the 2nd rounder just puts the deal into a state of egregious imbalance as there is no reason to balance dollars/term due to them being virtually identical.

I think a more reasonable offer is Savard for Ceci and a conditional 2024 2nd and a 2025 4th. If Edmonton reaches the Finals the 2nd becomes a 2024 1st.

He’s not saying things we haven’t heard from others before or that we couldn’t connect dots for ourselves.

However, like every year at this time, he drops a nugget or two about the Habs and we’ve seen him be right about certain offerings over the years.

That said, it’s all submitted with a healthy dose of skepticism.

What is the worth of a 2nd round pick?
Honestly nothing is kind. Look at the habs 2nd round pick of the past decade? Nothing even decent and don't talk to me about Hutson (he is still just a prospect)
Lehkonen was a solid 2nd rounder, Ylonen is nothing spectacular but still an NHLer with upside, Struble looks like a very solid player and Romanov was basically traded for Dach. Also the habs didn’t have a 2nd rounder in 4 drafts since 2013. I didn’t add Hutson or Beck cause you didn’t want to, far from nothing even decent still.

I could see a deal with Colorado happening. we've been trading partners in the past on 2 occasions already during Hughes' time here.

Savard, 50% Allen
for
Ritchie + 1st 2024 + Johansen

It would work from a cap standpoint and addresses needs on both sides.
Maybe the draft compensation needs to be adjusted a bit. Perhaps we send a 2nd (Colorado's own) or 3rd back their way. Maybe Evans is involved.

I doubt Avs give up Ritchie and a 1st. They're basically giving two 1st round picks by giving a 1st and Ritchie (1st rounder).

I think you over estimate draft pick value.

At this time, all playoff contenders are willing to trade any of their draft pick to make them win the cup. 2nd round pick historically are not that great at producing NHL talent (maybe around 10%) and most of them will take many years to establish themselves. (5 or 6 years)

A guy like Kovacevic is 1. Dirt cheap, 2. Has NHL experience, 3. Has size and 4. he is signed for another year. There are not much risk at all and the chance of getting a similar level of player with a 2nd round pick is very low.

Final take, this draft depth stink after the first 20 names. If I were a contending team, I would have no issue trading away a low 2nd or 3rd round pick even for average assets. (Bottom pairing defenseman or forwards)
At 10% you are way too low even if you consider only late second rounders when selling to good teams.
2015 draft has 11 late 2nd (out of 16 picks) playing in the league, most with more impact than a waived 7th dman on a bad team.
2016 has 10
2017 (bad draft) has 6 or 35%
2018 is at 8 or 50%
