As always, it's a question of cost and the circumstances of your respective team. How many championships has McDavid brought to the Oilers? Matthews to the Leafs? Without a strong supporting cast, it's the very rare player that can single handily change the fortunes of any team.

Indeed! Hockey isn’t a strong link sport like basketball; you need at least 11 good NHL players (7F/3D/1G) to hope to truly contend.

HuGo tends to come out of nowhere with his trades.................we can all speculate which is what the talking heads at TSN do..............but almost always, the y find a way to make trades, that no one saw coming.
The media in Montreal seems to have zero insight on anything............the guy is as good as Gainey for nothing getting out.

Of course but how many Stanley Cup winning teams didn’t have a super solid top 6 with at least 1 or 2 star players
Agreed. But we still don't have a super solid top six. We have to be realistic. We are not ready to compete. We were outplayed by a wide margin by the Coyotes. Our front line talent is very shallow and we are still carrying a number of highly over priced, underperforming veterans that are gobbling up a large percentage of our cap. And are we so certain that our promising prospects will be major contributors? If they fall short of expectations, we will continue to be irrelevant for both the near and far term future. This is not the time to gut our team's future to acquire one player, particularly one who’s never scored 40 goals in a season.

If an affordable, reliable, shut down, shot blocking, cup winning defenseman isn't worth a 1st, I don't know what is. Bigger question is would Montreal trade him now as he loves playing in Montreal and loved by his teammates.

Savard has had a huge impact on our younger D, lately since his recall Xhekaj has looked much better ever since being paired with Savard. Barring an injury, we'd still be able to get a first for him next deadline so I don't think HuGo are in a rush to trade him unless they can a ridiculous offer they can't refuse.

My guess is Savard gets traded to a playoff team next year, then gets re-signed by the Habs in the summer for a cheaper short-term deal to be a 6th/7th D for his last couple years before retiring.

Cole Caufield for Brady Tkachuk.

Come at me
No need, I already thought of it too. I'm not really a CC fan as I think he's one dimensional, small, shoulder issues, etc and BT is a better all around player with size as well. Teams are always afraid that a player will come back to haunt them, but in this case, it could go both ways.

ive loved the way Armia has played since being sent down. reminds me of the covid playoff run he went on before he got awarded his contract. I think he could be a viable trade target for a playoff team

Agree with this guy

According to D’Amico, Habs were never offered a 1st rounder for Anderson.

Even if Habs were offered a 1st for Anderson, people stop there and don't consider what the rest of the package was.

My guess is that the other teams wanted Habs to retain, and they don't want to do that on a contract with 4-5 years left on it. Any team interested in Anderson would want him with retention and it's a logical ask. But I understand Montreal refused because they'd rather avoid having nearly $3M of dead cap for 4-5 years.

It reminds me of Subban when Nashville traded him to New Jersey. There were teams interested, but were asking the Preds to retain. He still had 3 years left @ $9M. Preds ended up taking a lesser return because the Devils were the only team willing to take the entire cap hit. Preds needed the cap room, so it was more urgent for them to move PK's entire cap hit so they were willing to take a lesser package.

I don't think Montreal is in a rush to trade Anderson because they've already started created flexibility with their cap in other way, slowly but surely.

I've said it on here before, but I think Armia has increased his value since his call up. He probably increased it from the moment he was sent down and didn't pout and got to work.

Last year, he had 7 goals and 14 pts in 43 GP. This year, he has 10 goals and 15 pts in 43 GP. So his production is pretty similar. But it's the other things that he's doing that make him more effective this year than he was last year. He's not goin through the motions but creating and contributing more.

Great penalty killer. Strong on the puck and patient with it. Playing very well with Roy and Newhook. His shot is great. Confidence seems like its back.
Frankly if he can keep playing like this, id prefer him on the team rather than a 3rd rounder or whatever we'll get tossed our way
