Why would we do that ? First won’t be a good one and better offers for Monahan will be there .
And Tavares won’t make us a contender next year.
The only older center I would take on this team is German :)
If we make any deal with the Leafs to save their window from closing, I'm asking for Easton Cowan. As I was following Mailloux play last year, I had an opportunity to watch Cowan repeatedly. In my opinion, with his great skating ability and creativity, this kid projects to be a strong NHLer. Cowan should be a lock for Team Canada at the upcoming WJC. The Leafs stole him at 28th OV at the 2023 draft.

Makes sense on paper but I can't see Tavares waiving his NMC to leave Toronto for Montreal... Especially with us being a few years away from contention.
Maybe he can be convinced by saying he will never win in Toronto and can't be traded to a contender at that cap hit. The habs have the ability and space to possibly retain on his contract and flip him to a contender.

Yah, massive pipe dream.

Why would the habs do it?

You get potentially high picks to take on Tavares' contract which can be used for future trade capital.

No the habs won't compete, but I do believe that for youth to develop, it helps to play with and alongside other top talent. Tavares would fit that bill.

He wouldn't be acquired to help the habs compete, but simply to help the team continue to accumulate assets. Would the leafs part with a 1st and a good prospect to dump Tavares? The habs next year could retain on Tavares remaining year to get even more additional assets.

I think it could work out as a one-year stop gap. With Dach injured, I'm hesitant to dump Monahan only for picks given how thin the centre depth is. I don't think it's good for Suzuki to be the only offensive centre on the club and I think it's bad for the development of Newhook and Slafkovsky to not play with an offensive minded centre.

Edit*
But perhaps we can be the middle man in a 3-team deal with Tavares going somewhere like Carolina or Dallas...

Getting picks and a cap dump from them (on top of Laffs picks in your proposal) to retain enough to help him fit.

If there are increasing demands on the US federal treasury without a corresponding increase in demand in the US dollar as a reserve currency, in fact the latter may actually see a decrease in demand. Events that could lead to this include the failing wars in Ukraine, Israel, etc.

ETA: Not really hyperinflation, that was hyperbole, but I think that inflation rates of 20+%/year are plausible in the next few years.

Thank you, very interesting.

The level of debt and the credit risk associated with the USA right now might also cause a problem for the demand in USD as a reserve currency but also for the Treasury Bills at lower yield. Stagflation may be another possibility.

Draisaitl is already 28. The habs cup window would have to open now and I don't think they have defense or goaltending to compete.

It's a tough fit for where the team currently is. MB really left this team in a bad state in terms of being ready to compete anytime soon.

I understand, and agree, just wondering if we should try anyway since he’s such a premium player. Or not try at all.

Draisatl
Foegle
Ceci

For

Slafkovsky
Monahan
Mallioux
Xhekaj
Montembault/Primeau
Conditional 1st 2024

?
I don't see them having much of an interest in Monahan, unless they think they can still turn the season around somehow. That's the general idea outside of that, a 1st, a goalie, 3 young piece and a vet to make the cap work.

No chance in hell Drai is being moved. The Oilers will be buyers not sellers.

Expect them to dump Woody and possibly make an early season trade. They need secondary scoring, defence and goaltending.

Let's ship them one of Monty/Primeau/Allen

And maybe Kovacevic

Ask for the world in return. Top two protected first plus 4th. If we have to take a dead contract back....drop the protection and add a second instead if the 4th.

To EDM: Jake Allen
To MTL: Jack Campbell + two 1st round picks ( or a good prospect and a 1st)

So apparently, Dreger on TSN690 this morning said Habs have interest in Xavier Bourgeault of the Oilers, their 2021 1st round pick (22nd OA).

He's considered the Oilers #1 prospects probably why Dreger said that. I don't think he's going to be more than a two-way middle 6 forward and the Habs already have plenty of prospects aiming to fill those holes.

It’s worth a gamble if it’s for one of our goalies. Habs prospects that are supposed to fill those middle six roles (Ylonen, Farrell, Mysak, Kidney) aren’t really stepping up. I think he’d be a really good addition.

I'm not sure, I think management believes they may have something in Montembault.
Allen at 1.9375M, with Montreal holding back 50% of the Cap hit? Montreal would need to add something like Kidney or Ylonen.

Don't think Bourgault for Montembeault would happen because there is no contract certainty with Montembeault.

I think EDM can get a better G than Allan or Monty, especially for their best prospect.

The best bet we have is Monahan and/or a low-cost dman.

Ceci+ for Kovacevic or Harris would give them cap breathing space.

They can dump Foegle to us.

Things of that nature

They won't use their last retained spot to get Bourgault. Boutgault and a 1st for Allen and something else maybe.

Seriously? While I understand your point, what would be the something else to get the first? I don't think a deal like that happens with salaries working out.

He may be their best prospect but he is doing nothing in the AHL And there may not be a better goalie than Montembault/Allen available. There are very few good goaltenders in existence,
