Trade Ideas with non-compliant salary cap teams:

Scenario A - Toronto:

i. Brodie + 2024 1st vs Future considerations (Toronto saves 5M AAV)

ii. Brodie vs Armia + 2024 3rd (Toronto saves 1.6M now; Habs save 3.4M later)

Scenario B - Pittsburgh:

i. Petry + 2024 1st + 2025 2nd vs Future considerations (Pittsburg saves 6.25M for 2 years)

ii. Petry + 2024 1st vs Armia (Pittsburg saves 2.85M for 2 years)

iii. Carter + 2025 2nd vs Future considerations (Pittsburgh save 3.125M)

Feasibility/Follow-up required to enact Scenario A/B:

Be it Brodie or Petry, the Habs however don’t have the room to keep the acquired cap dump on the roster; using a retention spot to send him away as soon as acquired thus seem logical.

Bearing that mind, it essentially amounts to a 3-way deal dynamic and pulling the trigger entails that the Habs find a way to convince the team where Brodie/Petry ultimately lands that Montreal’s role in the trade warrants a high draft pick, not only the usual mid-rounder incentive.

In that regard, Brodie is not the optimal candidate: retaining 2.5M over 1 year only is not enough to warrant a high incentive.

Petry however is another story; retaining 3.125M until the end of 2024-2025 (6.25M) is substantial, to say nothing of the fact that Petry half-price could later be resold by the acquiring team at 25%; Petry @ 1.6M on an expiring deal could fetch quality asset(s) on TDL 2025.

Considering this, a more feasible Scenario C could involve both Pittsburgh and Anaheim:

Pittsburgh : Saves 6.25M in cap space for 2 years; becomes cap compliant and has about 3M leeway for further moves.

Montreal : Retains 3.125M in salary for 2 years and obtains Pittsburgh 2024 1st because of Petry’s remaining term; probably the best odds of an impactful retention spot when compared with Monahan (already under 2M), Hoffman, Armia or Dvorak this year.

Anaheim : Obtains Petry at 50% and Pittsburgh’s 2024 or 2025 2nd. Petry’s reduced salary shouldn’t hinder Zegras and Drysdale’s new deals, he can still pull 30-40 points seasons and Anaheim also banks on reselling Petry at 25% next year to further optimise the initial deal.

Win-win-win?

Can’t believe today’s deal!

Petry @ 4.6M + 2024 2nd round + Legaré + DeSmith for… Hoffman and Pitlick - and no salary retention whatsoever from the Habs! - that’s literally obscene.

It’s basically amounts to killing four birds with one stone:

1) Forwards’ logjam for 2023-2024 solved at the NHL level with Hoffman and Pitlick’s departures ;
2) Goalie depth to either sale DeSmith or keep him if Primeau is picked up in the waivers (unlikely) ;
3) A young RW to bolster the Rocket ;
4) Petry should fetch interesting asset(s) if traded with further retention, either before the season starts or around TDL*.

*If Petry remains a Habs in the short term (maybe to rebuild/optimise his trade value on a first pairing assignment with Matheson until February), curious to see if the Habs will trade another D (Kovacevic?) this offseason or if they’ll simply send a waiver-exempt D to Laval.

Can we retain on Petry again?

Gotta think DeSmith is going to get traded too with Allen/Monty here
We can, salaries can be retained twice. Similar to when the initial team and a 3rd team retained on the same player at last trade deadline.

Jean-Sébastien Day left for Europe. That's a shame, he did good in Laval and was so enthusiastic about joining the Habs org. Seems like HuGo want to clean house in Laval for whatever reasons.

If you had told me we traded Hoffman for a second without retention I would have laughed at you.

Now you tell me we got Desmith who is a credible backup and Petry back at 4.6? That's just ridiculous. We couldn't find ANYBODY to trade Hoffman a couple months ago.

That's why I think they should have qualified Gurianov.

Forgive me if this has already been brought up since it's a few days old, but I just saw this:

I don't know enough about Boston's roster/prospect pool, but with Bergeron retiring and now Krejci soon to announce his, Bruins will surely be looking for centers. I know they were rumored to be interested in Scheifele.

So which teams will need a RHD? Who are the best trade partners for Petry?

Dallas Ottawa Seattle Tampa Bay Toronto
But he has a 15 team no trade

A few observations on potential Petry swaps that would work cap-wise this offseason; remains however the incentive to determine in each case. I essentially focused on UFA 2024 RHD since the acquired player/contract would hopefully be sold again at TDL to start making room for upcoming RHDs in 2024-2025.

Dallas could indeed use a RHD ; a swap with Hakanpaa (1.5M AAV - UFA 2024) should be enough cap-wise to build something around.

I don't really see Ottawa or Tampa Bay as trading partners this time around. Seems impossible to work cap-wise with these teams, even with Petry at 2.35M.

As for Seattle, Schultz (3M AAV - Expiring UFA 2024) works cap-wise as the basis of a deal.

Swapping Petry at 2.35M with Barrie or Klingberg (5M or 4.15M AAV respectively, both UFA 2024) would in principle solve Toronto's cap compliency issue.

Other candidates:

Nashville? Barrie (4.5M AAV - UFA 2024) or Carrier (2.5M AAV - UFA 2024) each work cap-wise; Carrier's age (26) probably makes him the only target maybe worth considering keeping beyond TDL 2024.

Vancouver? Swapping Petry with Myers (6M AAV - UFA 2024) would require quite an incentive from the Canucks.

Los Angeles? Matt Roy (3M AAV - UFA 2024) would likely be the contract coming back.

What about Detroit, Petry's presumptive favorite destination? The only candidate that'd make sense for the Habs as the returning contract would be GhostBear (4.15M AAV - UFA 2024), who the Red Wings just signed, so that'd be peculiar to say the least.

Losing both will weaken Bruins this coming season

Europe may very well be his first choice at this point. After 10 years of mostly AHL, I certainly wouldn't blame him for wanting a change .

Petry to Red Wings seems like a good match in terms of Det’s needs & available cap space / AAV - not sure what return would be.

Petry won’t go to the West

I wonder about Florida as a potential landing spot for Petry.

They lost Gudas and Staal to free agency and both Montour and Ekblad had off season shoulder surgery. Ekblad is expected to be back for camp but Montour is likely missing the first month of the season. Petry would be a good fit there as a veteran presence who would replace some of that lost offence/playing time.

No idea what the return would be, since Florida is low on picks and prospects, but I’d push hard for Gracyn Sawchyn to be included if we retain 50% of Petry’s contract. Kid has potential to be a terrific player.

Assuming you mean Jean-Sébastien Dea? He signed with Arizona last year and has been gone from Montreal/Laval for a whole year
