Makes complete sense, they need to make space for internal growth.. not hamper it further.
Agreed, but the Habs need another body who can chuck 'em when need be potentially.

If he's cleared the Habs might contact him. I'm assuming they want things to be kept downtown about that, especially as they're STILL waiting on the decision for Mailloux, or I missed it.

Recently, not long after the end of the Dubois saga, we discussed other potential trade targets that could bolster the Habs’ top-6 in the near future and someone mentioned Elias Pettersson in Vancouver - that really stuck with me since.

He’ll still be RFA next summer, upon expiry of his current 7.35M AAV contract (10.25M in « real money » for 2023-2024).

6’2’’ centerman, lethal on the PP - and PPG in both regular and postseason so far; he’d be an even more perfect fit if he can further develop his FO skills (43% average, in-betwenn Suzuki’s 47% and Dach’s 35%).

I was looking at the Canucks’ roster on CapFriendly for 2024-2025 and it’s shockingly barren; 9F; 4D; 1D - but at least 32M in cap space. And their prospect pool seems very forwards-oriented; they hardly have any RHD in their system.

In other words, unlike with Dubois this summer, the Habs could likely have the pieces sought by Vancouver if they decide to sell Pettersson.

What could a reasonable package for a 8 x 10M AAV sign-and-trade look like?

MTL’s 2024 1st round pick +
One F : Owen Beck / Filip Mesar
Two Ds amongst : Engstrom/Mailloux/Barron/Struble?

I don't see MTL's 2024 1st being on the table.

Pettersson would be perfect age wise and style wise, he's already one of the best three zones center in the league. I can't see the Nucks not being able to resign him though and they sure won't trade him unless they have absolutely zero hope to.

I don't see MTL's 2024 1st being on the table.

I think it will depend where the pick ultimately lands; if it’s within the top-5 and the Habs can hope to draft an elite forward, then indeed rather impossible they move the pick; an elite forward is one of the missing pieces of the puzzle after all - and obtaining such an asset on an ELC contract would be obviously optimal, cap-management-wise. (It would leave enough time for Gallagher’s contract to expire before having to give a substantial raise, for instance.)

But if it’s beyond that range, the 2024 Draft top-15 is very D-oriented - more than 50% according to some projections! If most BPAs on the Habs’ list are Ds when it’s their turn to pick, I could definitely see them leveraging that pick for a bold move.

A trade for Pettersson, who is a top 10 centre in the league, starts with Suzuki and then the Habs would have to add.

Dach and Suzuki already fill top two center positions

Acquiring Pettersson - or any impactful player for that matter (either through trade or draft) - could indeed likely mean that one of Dach/Suzuki would then be playing RW, or it could also mean the Habs can ice a balanced top-9 built around one of the strongest center line league-wide.

In any event, talent is talent and the Habs simply cannot limit/content themselves with having Suzuki-Dach as C1/C2; no matter how a meaningful target becomes available, I think they have to make due diligence and explore the cost-benefits when/if it happens.

EP40 is one of the best centers in the league imo (102 points last year!!) and any trade to get him is going to hurt. But man would I love to land a player like him. Turning 25 in November, can easily fit with the core we've got started, PP with Suz/CC and EP40 is a dream (especially with our boy Lane coming soon 😁), Dach can go to RW if not part of the package.

Now what kind of value would need to go to Van... We've seen what it took to get Dubois to LA and EP40 is much better.

Dach
1st Rd pick (some sort of lottery protection?)
Mailloux
Mesar

Or

Dvorak (warm body)
Beck
Barron
1st Rd pick (unprotected, gamble that EP40 will keep us out of the lottery spots)
+

Or

Consider offering Reinbacher+ if that's what it takes?

Just spit balling... But if it doesn't hurt to give up than another team will beat our offer.

That’s the answer I was afraid of; if Suzuki or Dach has to be included, that would defeat the initial purpose…

I guess the alternative value-wise would be if the Habs land a top-5 pick next year, but then it wouldn’t make sense for the Habs to trade for the 10M+ player when they keep the one on an ELC…

So here's the thing, Pettersson is actually a number 1 center in the way Dubois isn't (at least not yet). I don't see there being much chance Vancouver moves him, but you're looking at Suzuki++. But I think Montreal would be finally in a position to make that kind of trade. The team has amassed a lot of prospects and young NHLers, they're in a position to actually swing an Eichel-like trade.

Vancouver has the cap space to keep Pettersson though and they're going to offer him a ton of money, I doubt he gets traded.

Move Dach to 3C if needed.

Any offer for Petterson has to start with either Suzuki or Dach.

I think that Kent will stand pat, no more moves, he will let the season start with what the habs have
Personally I'm fine with this. This is a see where everyone is at kind of season. Big moves and interesting moves don't need to be made now even if it would have been cool. We can go into the season with this quantity and we can widdle it down form a team to see what is most necessary. As long as 80% of the team doesn't get injured again

Any offer for Petterson has to start with either Suzuki or Dach.

That's not how things go when star forwards are traded.

For example, Jack Eichel was traded for forwards Peyton Krebs, Alex Tuch, a top 10 protected first-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft and a second-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Alex DeBrincat was traded for a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Kevin Fiala was traded for a 1st rounder and prospect Brock Faber.

Timo Meier was traded in a very large trade (The New Jersey Devils today acquired forwards Timo Meier, Timur Ibragimov, defensemen Scott Harrington, Santeri Hatakka, goaltender Zachary Emond and a fifth-round pick (originally Colorado's selection) in the 2024 NHL Draft via trade with the San Jose Sharks in exchange for New Jersey's first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft (conditional), defensemen Shakir Mukhamadullin and Nikita Okhotiuk, forwards Andreas Johnsson and Fabian Zetterlund, a conditional second-round selection in the 2024 NHL Draft and a seventh-round selection in 2024. San Jose will retain 50% of Meier's 2022-23 salary as part of the trade.)

But hey, if the Habs want to acquire Elias Petersson, they'll need to give up Suzuki, a 1st without protection, Justin Barron, and maybe they'll have to take on a cap dump. Throw in a second. Makes sense.

The time for the Habs to acquire a star forward is probably 11 months from now. They'll have the following trade chips:

- The 2024 1st rounder.
- The 2025 1st rounder.
- Calgary's 2025/2026 pick.
- Any surplus pick they might acquire by trading some of Dvorak, Anderson, etc.
- The ability to take on cap space.
- One of Barron, Mailloux, Engstrom, Struble, Harris may be expendable if enough of them have good seasons, to go along with Reinbacher, Guhle, Hutson having good seasons.
- One of Ylonen, Roy, Newhook, Mesar, Harvey -Pinard, Heinemen, Kidney, Beck may be expendable if enough of them have good seasons, same reason.

Hughes will be able to easily exceed the established market value for star forwards.

But it will work better a year from now, as it will be clearer what the Habs need.

Canucks would likely want a young center/center prospect, just like Buffalo wanted Krebs. Obviously, Dach is more proven and has a higher pedigree, which should reduce the amount or quality of futures that would have to be included. Suzuki does that to an even greater extent.

If the Canucks want a good center, they will get one. If not from us, then from some other team.

We have the assets and if Petterson is available we should very seriously consider it, without undue attachment to our current players. This is the kind of move that potentially takes you to contention.

The Habs could set up a three way trade by sending some of the above mentioned assets for a young center. They could also just ignore Petersson and trade for an impact winger.

for EP i easily offer our 2024 1st +

hes probably a top 10 center in the league any convo for Petterson starts with Suzuki +
Let me rephrase then : I don't see the Habs being that interested in trading significant assets for EP.

Of the 2 players listed:

Eichel (who is currently closest to Pettersson in value of the players listed above) needed surgery after getting traded (and wanted a surgery method that Buffalo wasn’t willing to approve).

DeBrincat wanted to be traded and only would go to Detroit.

I think it would take more to trade for Pettersson than the above trades.
