No way. They are trying to develop players. They need to give the 2nd unit at least 30-40 seconds of ice time (at least after they fall out of contention) and especially when the 1st unit is doing nothing. Gallant was an imbecile for using the same PP unit the whole 2 minutes even when they were absolutely useless. Which is why Lafreniere, Kakko, Chytil, etc haven't developed.
Good points, while we are still developing kids...............that said, when we get better, we should abandon that train of thought, when and once we get there.........

Hey, a PLD deal can still happen. Just give him 2 more years and he’s sure to want out. :sarcasm:

Meantime, is Hughes at the lake?
I’m surprised no one blamed old going to la on being the master revenge on the habs hahahah
Knowing mb , it will become the habs savior non évent

I wonder how much time off these GMs really have. You just never know when an offer can materialize.
No different than many bosses and business owners. They likely take vacations, but have their phone and computer handy. Kent Hugues can be at the cabin or on the beach and still be in contact with Toronto about Murray or with Ylonen's agent and the legal team in the office.

I'm not sure how much of a balance MSL can strike between developing young players and pumping up the trade value of old players. In the absence of injuries, I expect some players will be write offs.

Can you write down a satisfactory healthy top-12 that balances these competing priorities?

Anderson-Suzuki-Caulfield
Slafkovsky -Dach-Newhook
Ylonen-Monahan-Gallagher
Evans-Dvorak-Armia
Sit: Hoffman, Armia, Pitlick, Harvey -Pinard, Pezzetta

I tried. I couldn't get it to work.

Slafkovski - Suzuki - Monahan* : Coud be a very interesting pre-TDL 2024 line; hopefully galvanizes Slaf’s development all the while raising Monahan’s value as a TDL 2024 trade asset.

Newhook - Dach - Caufield : The 2019 Draftees’ line; no trade asset to dangle; pure development through top-6 minutes!

RHP - Dvorak* - Anderson* : Could be an efficient two-way 3rd line; hopefully raises Dvorak’s value as a worthy TDL/Offseason 2024 trade asset - and raises Anderson’s value as well, since he could become a trade asset mid-term himself.

Then it gets much trickier… Obviously injuries will occur; Ylonen should in that case be the first called up to top-9 duties development-wise; Hoffman, trade-optimization-wise*.

*Although one could argue that developing Ylonen is also a trade-optimization move since he could become a trade asset himself considering the influx of wingers coming up - and that Hoffman’s intrinsic value cannot be build up enough to warrant the ice time required…

And since Ylonen is waiver eligible, I keep him around in the NHL; Evans as well of course.

That would leave Pezzetta, a prototypical 13th forward.

And then the contracts the Habs are stuck with for the foreseeable future alternating with Hoffman (until the latter is hopefully traded ASAP) as 12th forward: Gallagher and Armia.

Makes sense. These types of high powered positions demand that one can never quite shut off the valve.

Sorry bit hard to see Gallagher Armia and Hoffman being so far down the depth chart.

Well the aim was to build up lines that could bolster trade assets and development of the next core, hence why Gallagher, Armia and Hoffman were given the lowest priority in terms of ice time when everyone’s healthy.

Then again, I hardly see any of them actually deserving regular top-9 minutes next year.

The Habs’ already tried a « redemption line » of Hoffman-Dvorak-Gallagher, with very underwhelming results if I recall correctly - and if it occurs again, I think that line likely gets outplayed by the RHP- Evans-Anderson one anyways.

I don't think anyone is signing him up until the investigation is completed. Even an AHL deal is not going to happen me thinks, as he is still part of an organisation at that point.
Agreed, I see now that I wasn't clear in what I wrote. I meant before signing and waiving him, the results of the investigation need to be divulged.

I like that...
4th line of Armia - Evans - Gally, with Hoff & Pitlick waived & sent to Laval till some teams offers us future considerations or to ride out their last contract year.

Ylonen/Pez as 13th-14th fwds stepping in for injuries.

If Dvo trade materializes, Monahan or Newhook can go to 3rd C role & Ylonen gets a shot at regular top 9.

The talented youth (Heineman, Farrell, Roy) stay put in Laval until they force their way into top 6 NHL spot (unlikely) or get called up once injuries or trades open up top 9 spots.

Matheson will likely be traded for a 1st rounder and a good prospect the same year that Hutson joins the NHL in three years.

Engstron will likely become Xhekaj's pairing partner on the right side (Engstrom can play RD on a lower pairing with zero concern).

Hutson - Reinbacher
Guhle - Mailloux
Xhekaj - Engstrom

I would not trade Hutson. There re no Ds with that upside or style of play in the Habs' system, nor has there been in, perhaps, ever!

I'd rather risk his skill; set doesn't translate to the NHL than lose that kind of play driving, puck-moving potential with so much hockey IQ and such sharp on-ice vision.

Even if Hutson files out, we have enough depth to ice a solid D-Corps.

Mathewson - Reinbacher
Guhle - Mailloux
Xhekaj - Engstrom

Guhle - Reinbacher
Engstrom - Mailloux
Xhekaj - Harris/Barron
The other thing is if Hutson can be a force on the pp, it will attract good ufa forwards

Monahan, if healthy and productive might not even get traded. He could be re-signed to a 3-yr deal around 4.5M. If he like his situation in Montreal, he might sign that medium term deal with some security (13.5M). Three years salary for what he had made in two when fully healthy...

Years 30, 31 and 32 for the Habs. Good veteran to keep around to support the continued progress of the younger forwards. Skilled depth that can contribute on the ice at a better than average production level.
If Monahan is healthy at tdl and has been productive. You trade him no question to a contender.

And if that happens, the Habs might have pulled the greatest trades in recent times of any NHL club. Nashville also got a haul for Jeannot.

indeed , man imagine texting on a long chair on the beach and making millions a year just to negotiate hockey contracts.

It's vacation all year
