Believe it or not, he might also like playing for other teams too. And if one of those other teams gets him sooner and wants to extend him long-term right away, why wouldn't he sign with them?
Better yet, why the special onus on Dubois to bend over backwards for the privilege to play in Montreal?

And why assume that all local players should take a pay cut in a team friendly deal to play with/stay with/come to Montreal (Danault being let go for 500K)?

Reading the bashing that regularly goes on, the known toxic treatment of local players from fans and media in Montreal, shouldn't they get a supplement to play here?

It really sounds like a sub class of player/human being when considering expectations and evaluation.

Because apparently his love for the CH doesn't go beyond a better contract with someone else.
Free Agents are entitled to narrow down their destinations, but it is not realistic to expect that a 25 year old should have only one destination.

When you know you are on his list, and it is possible to leverage his contractual situation so that the cost to acquire him is less than would normally be the case, then DO IT.

I don't understand the passive-aggressive tone we hear from some posters. It is not Dubois' responsibility to bear the burdens of Drouin or Desharnais, nor to pay for the disappointment Habs fans suffered from the likes of Martin Lapointe, Vincent Lecavalier, David Perron or any other local player who did not sign here as a free agent despite Montreal being on their lists.

Well then posters should stop repeating that he really wants to play in Montreal and treat him like any other prospective player.
Yes, I've been doing that, only to be told I'm only interested in him because his name is Dubois.

There is little desire to discuss this player. Most opinions are entrenched, whether there is valid cause for them or not.

If nothing else, Dubois is polarizing a figure with the fan base.

David Perron was interested in coming here. We could have easily signed him but Bergevin tried to convince him by giving him a low-ball offer.

He took St-Louis’s better deal.

If a player in the same contractual and team situation existed, with the same stats and projected 1b Center happened to be Slovenian I'd still say the same thing: trade for him THIS YEAR and get him signed up for 8 (which would be our advantage).

other than Kovalev we haven't had a grade "A" Free Agent actively "want" to play here in almost 30 years.

Other than Edmonton's ridiculous Centre depth (McDavid, Dri and RNH) we would instantly become the 2nd best C depth in the league with: PLD, Suzuki, Dach (at a fraction of the price).

HUGO knows this, which is why it will happen at the draft.

There won't be a tank nation 3.0.. as of next year MSL will be having these guys sniffing a wild card..

If Perron really wanted to play here he should have barked, shown his loyalty and signed below market.

And since he didn't, some fans insist Hughes treat Dubois like Bergevin treated Perron and also Markov and Danault. That'll teach Pierre-Luc to respect the CH logo!

I don’t think Perron ever had any intention of coming to MTL, probably used MTL to get a better deal.
Not that I really care that we didn't sign Perron but the rumor was that we offered him less term and money.

For a market that supposedly has a hard time attracting UFA you would think that Bergevin would have put all the chances on his side to make it happen.

MB was cheap, so cheap that everyone he sign is grossly overpay… If Perron wanted to come why would he not he just give MB the option to match… 4x4M$ was not crazy back in 2018, we sign Baron for 3.4M$.

Bergevin was cheap alright. However, we are not talking about the same timeline. Bergevin tried to lowball him on his 2016 contract. St-Louis signed him for 3,75m for 2 years.

Bergevin gave him a 1 year contract for less money.

Again if he wanted to come he would have give the option to match 2x3.75m$ isn’t crazy any way you look at it there no way that is a deal breaker and that 3 time where he hit UFA and he ended up signing with a other team even if MTL was is 1st choice at some point maybe that can be true for the last deal Detroit offered more and MTL didn’t really have space but the first 2 times MTL would have been pretty desperate for top6 French player… there no way he wanted to come to MTL if he opted to sign 2x3.75m$ and 4x4M$ somewhere else.

Geez… you are in for a ride next season.

HuGo’s plan is not to be good next season and probably not even the next one after that.

Unless the Habs have a third consecutive injuries-filled season, the current projectable lineup for 2023-2024 is hardly bad enough to solely rely on draft power.

Since the Habs are likely heading towards no man land’s with or without an impactful new core piece on their top-6, might as well reiterate a Dach-style trade this summer and bolster the roster, especially since there will be 2 organisational jewels to shelter next year; Slafkovsky and MTL’s 2023 1st.
