He didn't have to say anything on the subject. It's just a fact that players want to win and not tank like some seem to propose on here.

...it's "proposed" because it's going to happen whether we like it or not...Bargain Bin left us is horrid shape, so the only thing we really have to look forward to is getting good picks...so we have fun with it (Discard for Bedard and all that foolishness)...

I think he did. He can’t not answer the question of whether he wants to win or not.

It was the right answer. Doesn’t matter. Habs will still suck. He’s just not focused on sucking but rather playing hard and earning his contract.

With first bid on waivers, would you rather see the Habs claim:
A) A young dman who might or might not work out. i.e. Clague
B) A veteran dman who can be flipped at the trade deadline.

Who are they getting rid of first and/or putting on waivers to make space, is the question that needs to be answered first.

Assuming dmen will be:
Matheson
Edmundson
Savard
Wideman

The next three guys won't need waivers and could benefit from more time in the AHL:
Barron
Harris
Guhle
Norlinder

Assuming the guy we pick up would be better than these guys that would need to pass through waivers:
Schuneman
Bowey
Leskinen

...if there is no trade market for Armia & Hoffman by the start of the regular season, I waive them both, personally...and I keep doing it as often as I can...who knows, eventually someone may take one off our hands cuz they're in a real bind...

Might have been me. He has a NTC and I expect we would be on it, however - with Klingberg now Shattenkirk will get less minutes, hopefully he would see the value in coming to MTL and playing more.

If we could move Armia for Shattenkirk, it would be a good cap shedding move and we get a player we can flip at TDL.

Why would Anaheim take Armia for him...?

Barron and Harris will almost certainly start in the NHL.

So it’s more like a 7th D man unless there’s some stunner that sometimes happens. But still, we don’t have the cap to pick up a Twinkie right now unless Hughes can shed salary.

Even if waived, it’s been a rare occurrence that high salaried players with term get picked up. I’d imagine HuGo have a pretty good idea of what the value for their players is and if they’d even get picked up. Really only non contenders with space can afford to pick them up and why would they?

...I'm by no means saying they will get picked up, but I would do it just in case they do, as it doesn't really hurt to try...stranger shyte has gone on with NHL GMs lately...

Never know but I wouldn’t be making plans based on it happening.

I imagine we’ll start to see some movement in September leading into camp. Still a few players unsigned and teams wanting to finalize rosters.

Speaking of the Laffs

I think he's being a realist......he kind of said that he expect next year to be a tough one but after that it will be time to go for it and move up and I agree.

With the trade HuGo made lately.....Habs ends up with:

2019: 3rd overall pick (Dach) + 15th overall pick (Caufield)
2020: 16th overall pick (Guhle) + 25th overall pick (Barron)
2021: 31st overall pick (Mailloux)
2022: 1st overall pick (Slafkovsky) + 26th overall pick (Mesar)
2023: Two more 1st round pick to come, most likely a top 10 and bottom 10 pick

That's a whole lot of 1st round pick in the organization, including 2x top 5 with a good chance to add another one this year. If that's not enough to build a team, it will never be enough.

Hoffman could give them some goals. They are overstocked with D, understocked at F, opposite of us.
Oil and Habs have been natural trading partners for a decade now and the most that came out of it was moving Kulak.

Not holding out hope but I completely agree that they should be natural partners for all the reasons you listed.

...IF Edmonton would bite, does anyone think HuGo would do Barrie for Savard, a 4th this year, and their 7th back next year??...:dunno:
I remember reading something about how they’re counting on Savard to mentor the incoming rookie Ds this season. He’s not an untouchable but he’ll have a purpose.

Man, you’re trying every player in trade scenarios which further confirms how tough an exercise this is.

...Summer boredom...I think Hockey 24/7 anyways, so why not post about it...

The deal was Savard not Hoffman. Hoffman for Barrie made sense if they didn't resign Kane, they are set for wingers now.

...no, they need LW in their Bottom 6...I'm actually on their Boards right now discussing it...

Someone mention Shattenkirk earlier and this is a name that would really make sense imo. Runs the first PP instead of Wideman and fit well next to Guhle or Eddy. He's the exact profile Hugos is looking for with the expiring contract.
Shattenkirk would surely benefit from playing in Montreal and might well waive his NMC to come here if he wants a good long last kick at the can in the NHL beyond this season.

He'll get a major role on the right side of D, with nobody ahead of him on the NHL depth chart and will be flipped to a contender for a stab at the Cup come trade deadline.

By padding his stats and getting constant praise for helping out the Habs' D, Shattenkirk will just increase his value as an UFA next season.

If he does well, he'll always have Montreal as a fall back destination as an UFA because that RD isn't transforming itself overnight.

Gallagher just needs to worry about earning his spot in the lineup and being a relevant contributor

I agree with you, thick Nick is the slam dunk obvious C
