let’s say FLA finished 14. Wins LOTO and moved up to #4. Habs Finish 3. Keep and pick #3.

Dubois Suzuki Caufield
Slaf Carlson Michkov
X Dach X

A guy can dream, right? Lol.

However at that point, you gotta trade one for a Top 2 D.

You are missing the point completely, Huberdeau only helps suck ass less, not be a winning team. Acquiring him now, will be the equivalent of Bergevin having Price in his prime and wasting it by not having the players to surround him. So yes, I prefer sucking and drafting until you have enough homegrown pieces in the lineup to need to add the players like Huberdeau to make the difference and move the team to the next level. Trading 1st round picks for a player that will be past his prime by the time the rest of the team is in place is a Bergevin type move. Until you know what the missing piece is, #1 defense, or perhaps a goalie, getting him now is like buying expensive custom Mags for your old car, it may make you feel better, but does nothing to improve the car's actual performance.
The guy just had a 115 point season. You get him, a legit 2C in PLD, and you’re much more than just a team that “sucks less”

You don't need to trade anything. He's going to be available as a UFA. It's a free superstar. I had no idea we were so flush with superstars that we could turn down a free one.

If the idea is to draft a #1 dman then you might as well trade Suzuki and Caufield now because they will be past their prime before a drafted #1 dman is ready to make an impact.

Stop putting words in my mouth. Never said to draft a #1 defenseman. What I did say is that before committing assets or cap it is better to know what you actually need, unlike the current situation where you need everything.

Sure, you become Toronto with even worse defense and goaltending, 4 forwards and scrubs to support them

Here's my guess. Since the Habs need a vet RHD this guy is coming home on a 1 year cheap deal. :)

Not done per any means. He is a good number 4th d. His advanced stats are really good last year. People saying he is done, clearly don't watch other team's games.

1) The only reason he is not signed yet. Its because he's the 2nd best Dman still unsigned and he will get more once Klingberg will have chose a team and sign a deal. Subban not being signed is not worst than Kadris not being signed. Its not because he sucks, its because they are waiting for 1) biggest fish to sign 2) for a team to create capspace.

2) Even if we wanted to bring him back. Actually we dont even have enough money to sign Dach. We need to create space. Its sure we will trade a player.

3) Plus Hugues AND Gorton both said in different interviews they want to bring in a veteran RHD. A part from Subban who do you think is available that would fit that need? There is only 3 in the UFA market : a) 37 yo Boychuk b) 35yo Stralman c) Subban. The only way we could have another RHD is through trade, lets say Hoffman (4.5M$) vs a dman making 2.5M$ and less, cause we need at least 2m$ to sign Dach. Or Gallagher vs a bad dman with 4.5-5M$ contract.

I'm actually ok bringing back PK on a legacy deal. 1 year...1 mil.

He did a ton for Montreal and the community when there. Give him a good send off and transition to retirement. He will be a panelist on TSN/Sportsnet/CBC when all is said and done.

I think wait8ng on next summer for Hubs and signing him then is the best bet. I think his numbers will drop in Calgary this year. We will get a good idea of how many good years he has left and offer the appropriate deal based on his curve. Ideally he scores ~85 and earns a 7 x 8 contract. I'd be down for that.

I would worry about a trade and sign right now...as it would be in the neighborhood of 10 mil. Too rich for my blood.

How is it anything like Toronto? You’re not spending 80% of your cap on 4 players that can’t deliver. If anything it’s the opposite of what Toronto did. They waited too long to try and compete rather than go for it when Matthews and Marner were on ELCs.

This.

Ideally if we sign Hubs and Dubois we figure out a way to map out our big salaries that they expire when our young stars are due raises. I like the idea of ELC's, followed by bridge deals, followed by the 7 year deals. Each time they move from bridge to long term, one of the previous 7 ear deals falls off the books. Takes planning and a road map to success, but it looks like we are set up for this kind of turnover.

Like others have suggested I would wait until next summer to make any big decisions involving PLD or JH. Things can change quickly and I would be careful giving out big contracts to forwards when forwards are the strength of our prospect pool (Caulfield and Slaf). They need to be patient and allocate a significant amount of money to the defense core or they will risk becoming a top heavy and unbalanced team. Its too bad PLD or JH aren't top line defensemen, I would have a different opinion if they were.

Literally? Will PK be willing to accept the Wideman type role?

OK, maybe. 1 year $1.125M. Waive him and demote him if he sucks.

But let's not pretend that he is going to be anywhere near the Subban we had for his first 5 years here.
