To me, the shopping list needs to be a LW to play in the top 6 and a legitimate top 4 defenceman.
Up front, I think the Leafs should try to create the nightmare matchups they had when Kadri was around -- Matthews-Tavares-ROR down the middle. Kampf in the #4 slot. I wouldn't go Meier, as I think the price will be too high, and the fit too heavy on skill... my targets would be Tyler Bertuzzi, James Van Riemsdyk, Jordan Greenway, Lawson Crouse, Max Domi. Somebody with a bit of size or grit; that can play a role similar to Bunting... and maybe allow Nylander to play with ROR on a "3rd line", or give an ROR-Jarnkrok a little bit more offensive prowess.
On D, to me, we're still woefully short when it comes to a top 4 defenceman. You can argue any of Giordano, Holl, Sandin, Liljegren belong in the top 4 on a given night, but I think it's still a tough argument to make. They've gotta get a guy who legitimately belongs there -- ideally with some size and nastiness. I don't know who or how they're gonna find somebody, as I'd want better than Gavrikov; and it seems he's gonna get a crazy price.
That being said, despite obliterating their draft with the ROR deal... there are still pieces of value that can be moved. If you're getting a winger, Kerfoot or Engvall are justifiable subtractions; especially having added ROR/Acciari who can both play centre. If you're adding a defenceman, Sandin or Liljegren could both be considerations. There is Nick Robertson as well, who the Leafs probably should trade at this point.
Arizona seems like a pretty logical trading partner IMO. They made 7 picks in the first 3 rounds last year. Over the next 3 years, they have 8 EXTRA picks in the first 3 rounds. If anyone is likely to prefer slightly older prospects, it's probably them.
Challenge is -- those just don't seem like Dubas-type moves. He seems to like "his guys"... and I don't believe you can motivate them to move Crouse or Chychrun when you don't have a 1st this year, and you really don't want to talk Matthew Knies.
