Why does the Toronto Sports Media have a boner for bringing Luke Schenn back? What impact could a number 7 defender on one of the worst teams in the NHL possibly offer this team? Enough with the nostalgia shit.
When it comes to defenders I don't usually trust a lot of posters on these forums opinions. Can probably look at every playoff teams defence core and find many names that people on here would say would be #7 d men on the Leafs or were/are not good enough to give up any assets for. Even in previous seasons.

Why do people want former Leafs back so much?
Because people are way, way more negative and critical of their own players.
It's a cycle... Player starts here, and gets dumped on. They leave, memory of them slowly fades, and as people start largely seeing them just through highlights and casual out-of-market viewing, they start getting that grass is greener shine. Eventually, they are treated like gods and the missing piece of the puzzle we should have never let go.
But if they ever do come back, they suck again.

If mathews isn't our leader this year then iam done with him and we aren't going any where in the playoffs

He hasn't shown me that he is the 2nd best player in the league.

He'll he isn't the top player on our team.

To give up more top assets to me is stupid.

We gave up assests for these two players that i think will be signed for next season
O'Reilly 5 mil next season
Accuri 1.4 mil next season

Maybe trade for
Soucy
or
Schenn

Trade
Kerfoot to much money on the 4th line

Bring up
Holmberg

Not saying to get Luke Schenn or not, but a defensive depth defenseman is difficult for people to have conversations about because they're often not talking about the same thing.

There's a tendency to want to discuss merits of it based on the depth chart, what we already have, who will get play time. But when you get specific role players like Schenn, you're also designing for specific game situations.

For example, when you look at the depth chart, Sandin makes sense and Schenn doesn't. But if it's Game 6 and you have a 4-2 lead in the third, you probably want Schenn on the bench and don't want any part of Sandin.

The ultimate conclusion is I don't want Sandin or Schenn but just a better well rounded Top 4 guy. But if you had to choose, your answer might be different if you're talking on paper or on the ice.

Even if that were true, you don't get to switch your #7 defenseman in mid-game depending on the game situation, and you'd prefer Sandin out there for at least every other situation.

I don’t really want to see Sandin after Game 82 at all. The offensive premium he adds to the next guy is minimal and he gets manhandled at the blueline and down low.

That's the part of Sandin's game I always point out to people so in love with him. His Defense is very shaky...and his offense is barely above what an average D-man will give you (if anything at all)...so why all the love? Lilly has a much brighter future in that he is much more balanced and rounded as a player so far.

We still are not done.

I could still see a goalie or an additional d-man being added to the roster.

Maybe a bottom 6 forward? But with ROR and Acciari, it smoothens out the bottom six really well.

So goalie or d-man are left.

To me, the shopping list needs to be a LW to play in the top 6 and a legitimate top 4 defenceman.

Up front, I think the Leafs should try to create the nightmare matchups they had when Kadri was around -- Matthews-Tavares-ROR down the middle. Kampf in the #4 slot. I wouldn't go Meier, as I think the price will be too high, and the fit too heavy on skill... my targets would be Tyler Bertuzzi, James Van Riemsdyk, Jordan Greenway, Lawson Crouse, Max Domi. Somebody with a bit of size or grit; that can play a role similar to Bunting... and maybe allow Nylander to play with ROR on a "3rd line", or give an ROR-Jarnkrok a little bit more offensive prowess.

On D, to me, we're still woefully short when it comes to a top 4 defenceman. You can argue any of Giordano, Holl, Sandin, Liljegren belong in the top 4 on a given night, but I think it's still a tough argument to make. They've gotta get a guy who legitimately belongs there -- ideally with some size and nastiness. I don't know who or how they're gonna find somebody, as I'd want better than Gavrikov; and it seems he's gonna get a crazy price.

That being said, despite obliterating their draft with the ROR deal... there are still pieces of value that can be moved. If you're getting a winger, Kerfoot or Engvall are justifiable subtractions; especially having added ROR/Acciari who can both play centre. If you're adding a defenceman, Sandin or Liljegren could both be considerations. There is Nick Robertson as well, who the Leafs probably should trade at this point.

Arizona seems like a pretty logical trading partner IMO. They made 7 picks in the first 3 rounds last year. Over the next 3 years, they have 8 EXTRA picks in the first 3 rounds. If anyone is likely to prefer slightly older prospects, it's probably them.

Challenge is -- those just don't seem like Dubas-type moves. He seems to like "his guys"... and I don't believe you can motivate them to move Crouse or Chychrun when you don't have a 1st this year, and you really don't want to talk Matthew Knies.

Trade Rielly sideways for a more responsible defenseman
