By this logic, the Rangers will never sign another UFA or UFA-to-be, unless they take a big discount like Girardi did. UFAs always get paid well beyond their "value".
To me, Callahan is absolutely worth a 6x5mil or 6x5.5 contract. 6x6 is just what you have to expect.

There is a difference between overpaying a UFA who fills a need, and one that is now redundant and will be even less important to the team in the near future outside of "omg intangibles, omg lockeroomz!!!"
Valid, fair point. My counter argument is that I am confident that Cally is having an off year, and will likely return to the level of play we've seen from him for 5 or so seasons. Can I guarantee that? Absolutely not. Can I categorically refute that he's on the decline and is started to show his age? Absolutely not. Just a gut feeling.
Will he be that player for all 6 years of his contract? That I can almost guarantee that he won't be, just like everyone else here is saying. But given that I think he'll be the Callahan of old for most of that contract, I'm okay with that last year or two being rough.
I'm just surprised that EVERYONE has automatically jumped into the "Cally sucks now, he isn't worth the contract" camp. It's a little reminiscent of the "Henrik sucks, he's over the hill, don't sign him long-term" crap that a bunch of people were spewing earlier in the year. I don't understand why this fanbase doesn't give our heart and soul players the benefit of the doubt when they (The horror!) struggle for one season.
Ottawa traded the Tarasenko pick for Rundblad, then flipped him for Turris. Phoenix then gets a late 2nd for him.
Thats why we should trade Mcilrath. Now.
I don't think he sucks, I just think he is less important to the team now and going forward. Even if he scored 40 goals this year the injuries are still a valid concern, and if he wasn't basically guaranteed a full NMC, a 6 year deal might be more palatable where they could trade him 3 years in. This is a retirement contract for Callahan, and the Rangers shouldn't be the one giving it to him.
Considering the fact that everybody that watches McIlrath on a daily basis says he is coming along great, this would be an idiotic move for our team going forward.
Or, we could listen to the people that actually watch every single one of his games for the past two years and allow him to develop, considering they are saying he is coming along great.
But hey, you're probably right.

I don't.
I say he has flashes from game to game, but also does a lot that still worries me. Definitely still a work in process.
By no means would I give him away - but if he was a key piece in a big trade, you wouldn't hear a peep from me either.
@HackswithHaggs: 2 Blue Jackets scouts at Garden again tonight for B's/Panthers as Boston/Columbus have something cooking http://t.co/f6lLZ9asKf #BruinsTalk
This has been going on for a few weeks. Bruins need defense depth.
I read earlier today that the Jackets are looking for NHL defenders...
