I cant believe the hate for Cally here...All these contracts are insane....In a perfect world he would sign 4 for 20 but this is big business and all the numbers are out of whack...This guy lays it on the line every night and is one of the few guys who hits and plays with some passion...Take him out of the line up and we are even more vanilla to play against...All you cap experts isn't it going up and up in the next few years? Is the extra 500k really gonna turn the garden into a boo machine every time he touches the puck?

“@RealKyper: Told #Canucks given a short list Kesler would wave NTC. Believed in mix include #Pens #Flyers #Rangers. Van reluctant to trade him in Westâ€

That is scary thinking about with what McKenzie said the price for him was.

Don't want Kesler if it means giving up Stepan, a prospect and a first. Wouldn't even do Stepan straight up.

I think at 6 yrs/6 mil...Sather is all in

Dont budge. I hate that offer already so anymore and we continue to get annihilated by this offer. Trade him and dont screw us Sather

Can't compete with Pitts offer of Sutter, Depres/Doumoulin 1st.

Would be one hell of a deadline if the Rangers can wrangle Kesler and MSL.

Cally, do the right thing for yourself and test free agency. You'll be paid handsomely and you won't be resented for taking a deal that will set the team back.

It sucks it's come down to this because we all do love you, but it's not a sound hockey decision to sign a player of your calibre and injury proneness to that length of a deal.

You've busted your ass to get where you are, you've earned it. Get all of the money you can because in the end it's a long shot to win in NY with the GM your negotiating with right now.

This sounds silly, but thanks for writing that. Cally is my all-time favorite player, and i might be the only one around here who wants to see him re-signed at 6x6. And I fully understand why most of the fanbase wants to see him traded at those terms. But I can't stand the negativity on these boards towards him. You'd think he was Chris Simon, FFS

Might be nothing but I always figured it'd be easier keeping both Stepan & McD here together.

I would be really sad to see Stepan dealt at all, let alone for an aging Kesler.

Couldn't agree more. Keep in mind this place maybe makes up maybe 1% of the actual Ranger fan base. There won't be any boos.

It's not just the money. It's also the term. And the way he plays. And his history with injuries. And that he's essentially become our 3rd line RW with MZA's emergence. We are an easy team to play against. But we also can't put the puck in the ****ing net on a consistent basis and 6M should be used to help address that black hole.

Just because some teams are giving out stupid contracts like Clowe and Clarkson got doesn't mean we have to follow that trend. Sather just did a great job re-signing Girardi for 5.5x6. Girardi is an iron-man. He plays a harder position than Callahan. And more minutes. He's a legit 1st pairing RHD, and he has been for quite some time. If you're going to sign someone for over a half a decade, you have to think long-term.

Have we been watching the same player?? He has been mailing it in for months, absolutely no heart or emotion. Oh but he had that great game against the Avalanche, right? How could I forget the one good game he has a month...he did play like he cares in the Olympics, I'll give him that. But how about for the team he captains?

Get this greedy 'captain' out of here; I'll take a 3rd pick if it can guarantee we're not stuck with him 6 more years at any amount...

I agree with this.

This x1000

I honestly think the last few moves even though I hated the Gaborik trade at 1st have actually been REALLY good..

Mcdonagh on a SWEET contract,
Didn't give in to Stepan's long term deal demands as we're seeing he might not be worth that going forward (jury still out)
The Gaborik trade is turning out to be a good one even I must admit, at worst we got a young 3C and a potential top pairing future dman in return.
We traded for Carcillo for nothing.
Girardi on a nice contract.

I am atheist and somehow praying that the Rangers didn't actually offer 6x6. If that is the case, he is as good as signed and he will literally turn into one of the most hated players on the team. Its really sad.

The thing is, all you guys extolling Cally's zealous physical play, willingness to dive in front of any shot and propensity for laying it ALL out on the ice, every night are talking about a different Ryan Callahan. The Ryan Callahan who earned that reputation was about 26/27 years old and has seldom been seen in at least the past 100 or so games. I understand the adoration that that Callahan earned but you have to realize that this really isn't the same player anymore and that he'll be even further from that heroic fan favorite 2,3,4 years from now; let's not even entertain years 5 and 6 of the deal. We all love what Ryan Callahan HAS DONE for this team but we're looking at paying him for what he will be able to do going forward. It's simply not the same.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

Anyone advocating keeping Callahan obviously has NOT been watching the games is just a casual observer of the team.

The thing is, you are advocating that Cally is a 4m player.

But how much does it cost to get a 4m player today? I mean everyone know that Clarkson is a 3m player, he got 5.2m for 7y.

Go to capgeek.com . Go through team by team. What is each team trying to do and what do they need to do? You will find that so many teams will be buyers. Will try to add, add, add, and then add some more. There aren't ANY players available.

We have made misstakes here in NY. Resigning Cally might be another one, but the option of dumping him for a couple of C-tier assets is surely very negative too.

My point is just that I don't think this issue is a matter of what Cally is "worth" on some kind of scale based on comparables around the league. We have two options, keep him or don't keep him. Nobody will trade one of those good contracts that better players have for Cally.

Slats opted to strong arm his players to sign the shortest possible deals to save a few cents on the dollar short term.

6m per in 2014 is not absurd.

I'm not advocating that he's any price at all. I'm advocating that a smart hockey mind recognizes he's already begun to show the wear and tear that his heart and soul game has wrought on his body and the intelligent thing to do would be to let some other team sign him unless he wanted to take a SIGNIFICANT discount to stay. The signs are all there. Let someone else give him 6 years. He won't be worth it in three. He was a phenomenal player for us, but no one is more familiar with him than we are and he's not the player today that he was when he earned his league-wide reputation. Let someone else be the ones to pay him and regret it later. We have the inside scoop; the best scouting report there is. We should know better than to give him this contract. The fact that we actually have a chance to deal him and get assets, of any kind back, on top of the best scouting report possible, to know he isn't worth this money, is just the cherry on top. This has Drury and Redden written all over it from the jump. We simply need to pass, thank him for all he was as a Ranger and let someone else make this mistake. We've made enough in the past already.

Once again, it has nothing to do with Cally personally, he's starting to slowly break down. We've seen it with Don Maloney and Adam Graves. When those guys got to their early 30s, their production went down.

Jamie Langenbrunner can definitely be compared to Cally and Langenbrunner went in the complete opposite direction.

Langenbrunner:

Callahan:

Langenbrunner turned 30 in 2005. His best year up until then was 45 pts in 99' and 55 pts in 03'. No other season over 40 pts in those 10 years. He missed a lot of regular season time 20 to 30. Gotta have been 20-30 games no avg. Then he iced 53, 60, 41, 69, 61 and 14 between 30-35.
