How aggravatingly predictable. Great deadline otherwise, but man, what a pathetic half measure on the one big move that actually mattered.
Rakell is still under contract. He’s a good player who is probably respected in the room. He will have to be there at least the rest of this season.

The team was clearly opened to moving him. Way too many people reported it and Dubas never denied it, even in this press conference when he had the chance.

So if you were underwhelmed by the offers, or at least, not whelmed in the right way (picks v players), what’s the better response:

“He’s a good player on a good contract and we feel he can still be a big part of our plans moving forward”

Or

“We talked to every team in the league, desperate for them to offer us someone 10 years younger and nearly as good, but no takers. We’re stuck with him until July, when we’ll try this again”

I mean I dunno... I guess I'm in the vast minority and that's fine I get it but I wasn't in a super huge hurry to move like the only guy on the whole team who can score a goal unless the offers were just stupid.

Look Malkin has probably already had all the sharp objects and things that can be fashioned into a rope taken away from him... I see no real pressing reason to put Sid through that too unless it's just too good a deal to pass up.

No, the key to rebuilding is to hold on to as many 30 something players with long contracts as possible ... Trading Rakell have accomplished nothing other than getting younger, freeing up cap flexibility and gaining more draft capital., that would be so stupid that it's beyond discussing.
it would also help in the tank. imo

Then they were delusional buying when they did.
It’s still so funny to me that they got played.

i’m just mean but Sid could use a little adversity every once in a while.

I dont expect much from Pittsburgh media but what is up with these stupid questions. "Do you expect ___ to be part of the program moving forward?"

What is a GM supposed to say to that. No hes not a part of the program, hes a bum and we tried really hard to get rid of him

It's the same song and dance every time, isn't it?

I feel like they just stick to the same ten "acceptable" questions to ask and cycle through them year after year.

I get that it must be nice for the coach and GM to be in a town with "easy" media but FFS

He had to play with Dupuis while he was in his absolute prime (Crosby not Dupuis... Dupuis didn't have a prime) for years. He's done his penance lol

Shit they even traded for Iginla to fix that and he STILL had to play with him.

i mean it’s whatever it’s clear they are rebuilding.

You can argue about how they are going about it but I am glad they aren’t going the scorched earth Chicago method. Davidson is awful and just destroying bedard. Gona be Edmonton 2.0 there. They will be good again when they trade bedard and draft a different generational talent

"There was a ton of interest league wide because he's a great player having a great year, but nothing met our asking price today."

Again, fantastic work from the Petts deal, through today, but I think we're all pissing in the wind here if we're pretending holding on to a 32 year old having a career year and shooting at like 7% higher than his career average, in an insane market, a year after he was a 40pt dude, is anything but a missed opportunity. Draft day deals barely ever happen, and yeah, maybe they can dangle Rakell to teams who miss out on the initial flurry of the first days of FA, but we'll see.

I'm more inclined to believe Dubas when he says he thinks Rakell's a part of the vision of competing again in short order than this being a way to pat the guy on the back while winking and letting the league know he'll be available in the summer. /shrug

-edit- Also, removing Rakell had the added benefit of helping this team free fall their way to a top 4 pick. It's a notably shallow 1st round, but all four of the guys at the top would be the best gets since Jake, and on paper, since Staal. That's not a small detail imo.

Quite the nice haul by Carolina by flipping Rantanen to Dallas, especially considering they weren't going to be able to re-sign him at his asking price anyway.

Thats basically what he said, just adding on the extra “we feel he can be a big part of the program moving forward,” which doesn’t mean anything unless you’re Sid or Geno imo

Let's see what the Penguins actually do this summer.

The big thing I have with Rakell is like.. he's not that player. He's having a career year. You get a 1st for him, you take the Rangers 1st and you can actually get a player that helps the team moving forward.

This is the same mindset I had with Chychrun, Walman, etc.

Get pieces that help now and retain value given their age.

Don't commit to 30+ year olds. EK65 was a unicorn in that regard, because based on name value he will always retain value.

If you have 3 1sts and an additional piece, maybe you can actually pull a Peterka at the draft. McGroarty + 2 1sts probably gets that done. Plus you're pulling a top 5 guy.

Instead you don't really have anything to bring in an actual game changer.

Also, moving Rakell pushes us closer to actually get in the top 5 this draft.
