My super optimistic takeaway is that Dubas really did think this year was going to be competitive regardless of the roster downgrade for futures-gathering that he had done because he had an "OMGSUCHAGREATCOACH!" and that could help overcome the drag of a decidedly worse roster. Now that... this... has happened perhaps there will be some casting of doubt on the HC finally. As I said earlier a lot of Dubas' moves lately have felt a bit like he's officially had enough of letting Sullivan have complete autonomy and he is at least going to start herding him into what he wants to see. I also never bought this "total rebuild" stuff... not while Crosby is around. So I think that they will indeed reload this offseason and while I get that that upsets people... maybe the upside is the coach might finally be feeling the pressure especially if he is handed another "great" roster next season and he faceplants.

But I dunno. That also sounds really dumb/naive in many ways and hard to believe in others.
