Trade Deadline Thread (March 3)

Because you don't make moves to fill all your teams holes at the deadline because that's when you're paying a premium. In fact, some would say that strategy would be "very stupid". Not me, but some people.

You use the deadline to plug minor holes, needs and use them to make a push. Which unfortunately we haven't done.
Except this clearly hasn't been the case this year. Plenty of players moved on longer term contracts...

I said make moves last off-season.

ate a ton of shit about it from people here…and now here we are…needing the very things I advocated for.

do I get an apology or at least some understanding that i was right they didn’t act as they should have?

no.

we double down because we can’t do things now either…as Ottawa and the Islanders add pieces that will help them next year and beyond. Teams you are in direct competition with can help their future…but we still can’t fix the mistakes of the past.

great.

this off-season…when they again fall short of the moves that will then be THREE move windows behind what they should have done we will no doubt be doing this dance again.

Someone asked for proof they weren't cheap and I just gave them 3 major recent examples of them spending money. A lot more recent than the reasons we are getting of them being cheap. The situation of the NFL being a wealthy league has not barring in the fact they spent money.

They're cheap, just not in the roster or willing to pay their players area. Arena is a dump.
To be fair, the Sabres are still under the floor for next year with only a handful of bottom of the roster spots open. Giving out those contracts doesn’t mean that they’re suddenly spending to the cap - just that they’re not going to let a franchise player walk. They’ve been at the very bottom of spending for two years now, and next year doesn’t appear to be much different - yet. Once Dahlin, Power + Krebs get extensions then they’ll be forced to be spending a fair amount, but does that excuse 3 years of being a floor team, especially being artificially over the floor this year?

Even Arizona signed Keller to a big deal.

Tom Wilson ? What would it take to get him ? And then get jvr for a 3 rd would be possible. If not Wilson cost to much

Skinner Thompson Wilson
Van Riemsdyk Cozens Quinn
Peterka Krebs Olofsson

Til Tuch is back

We could use a watered down version of the sergachev for Drouin trade… or jones for Johansen. Would be nice to flip Rosen for a good d prospect.

CBJ has Jiricek, Mateychuk, and Ceulemans. I think Rosen for Ceulemans would be win win for both teams.

Good sized RHD, nice production at U of Wisconsin. Elite prospects says he is a good net front defender and has tight gap control. Sounds like something we could use, and probably isn’t too far away from being able to play in the A.

I take him for the cheapshots. Dish some out instead of recieving them all the time.
Telling it like it is.

We need to learn team defense, we need to work on special teams, and not to be lost is that we desperately need guys who take cheap shots at home to get the crowd going, and to get under other teams' skin.

When you can PK well, you can afford a few penalties here and there in order to steal the momentum. In the playoffs, it's essential.

Can still do this in the offseason.

Holding off on dropping a dime to save a nickel might indeed be refusing to pay an inflated price but it’s still small potatoes in the long run.

at some point you got to add or move pieces (too many similar small forwards);
you need to add a top4 D; honestly I don't know what that Stillman move was for; its not the time to add another project; you can do that if you re out of the playoff race.
there was a chance at retaining for free picks (I dont care if this is Peluga or Adams, it just didn't happen)

dont know how you look at the Chychrun deal and end up at paying a premium

also for all the GMs waiting for the summer, Chychrun and Meier aren't available anymore

One might suggest that the reason they got demolished last night is in some respect because of the unaddressed holes throughout the roster.
Buffalo isn't the first team Boston has made look terrible this season, and they won't be the last. Buffalo managed an OT win, a 3-1 loss and a pummeling last night against the best team in the NHL right now. 2 respectable games and 1 bad one against the top team in the NHL is better than I would have expected at the start of the year.

I'm all for a move or moves but no way they were going to make enough to offset how the team played last night.

Hate to break it to you and you may be surprised but guys DON'T want to play for the Buffalo Sabres who have sucked for 12 years. The only guys that would are people we'd have to vastly overpay. If every player had a 30 team no trade list, it would be us and Winnipeg. But at least Winnipeg has had success.

NYS taxes, snow on the ground 8 months a year and a small market. Only way we will start getting guys here are by trades by force where they have long term (a guy on a long term deal who a team is already looking to move probably isn't great) or building internally, and maybe they didn't like the trades on the market. Which the Chychrun deal really steamed me but we have no idea what's going on behind the scenes. The only way things will turn around is if we start to win which is going to be mostly internal, I'm hoping we can manage some nice moves in the off-season but if we don't I will start to be concerned about Adams being "scared"

Maybe it's just wishful thinking but I feel like Adams will be willing to spend assets more freely when they are a better team.

This is the chicken or the egg conundrum of the team - can they get better without plugging their holes and if they don't improve some positional players, will they get better?

sure it does, you dont lose to cbj and you just offset last night, done and done

I was speaking in general, I was more steamed about not matching that price for Chychrun than everyone else.

Let's spend that cap space to get into the playoffs to get smoked 7-1 in 4 straight. Last night proved we aren't in the same league as Boston.
I'll disagree with this a little bit. We aren't close to Boston's tier at this point to be sure...but we were playing last night without 2 of our top 3 players. Also, it was 2-0 going into the 3rd and at that point the Sabres were playing a decent road game under the circumstances. The game got out of hand in the last 5 minutes. Prior to that though, I was actually thinking that if you add in Dahlin and Tuch and maybe one half-decent deadline acquisition, a Boston/Buffalo series could at least be interesting.

There are a couple holes to fill, but this team should better next season just thru the young players gaining experience

He’d be great but I’d be shocked if the Caps would even entertain moving him.

You know better than this... nobody was expecting all the teams holes to be filled this deadline.

and i think with Quinn, Peterks, and Muffin this team does get better

if I were a betting man, and I'm too much of a betting man which is why i dont bet, I'd say the roster as is with development time sits around first wc and 3rd in the east

I know that, which is why I responded to his post which said "why make one move when we need to make multiple".
