Trade Deadline Thread (March 3)

The problem is it’s not accurate.

I can name at least 5 players who’ve barely scratched the surface of their potential; Power, Sammy, Quinn, Krebs and Peterka. They’re all basically rookies.

There is a lot of upside yet to mined from this roster. That doesn’t mean tweaking can’t be done. But the current roster is far from a finished product.
UPL is also a rookie and he is our starting goaltender. It is possible he will get more consistent with experience (I want an upgrade though).

SN talking about that Vancouver is still over the cap for next season. Damn.
Nhl network had Getzlaf on and he told an interesting story about how he had a trade done to go to Vegas in 2020 and called his GM at 2am and said it didn’t feel right and the GM agreed.

He then talked about how the deadline, as a star player, was always about looking around seeing if the organization was going to bring in another piece to the puzzle…and that was exciting. Amazing how uniform every former player is on what the room thinks, isn’t it?

also IE. “Terry is cheap” view. I do not like the Pegula’s at all and sitting around breathing down our staff’s necks. But they stand to make a lot more money if they make the playoffs and get fans fully inside the building again + playoff revenue. Than they do by sticking to their “internal cap” and dealing with the same hot and cold attendance next year.

Can we stop with this fabricated rumor that has no basis in reality?
When people tell me who they are, I believe them.

Been travelling for work this week, so it's been a chore trying to keep up with this thread, let alone post anything.

Here's kind of my summary of thoughts on trade deadline week - Of the guys that have been traded the only ones I really had any interest in were:
1) Meier
2) Ekholm
3) Orlov

Regarding Meier & Orlov, there's no way I would have spent the assets without knowing if they'd sign a contract extension. The rental price was way too high.

Ekholm is an awesome player, but he has a fairly hefty cap hit, he's older, and comes with term. While I really wanted him, I'd have to think long and hard about making that kind of deal. I also don't know how much Barrie factored into it for the Preds, do we have an equivalent piece that was as interesting to the Preds? :dunno:

Ideas that I was lukewarm on:
1) Lafferty
2) Jeannot

I wouldn't have beat Tampa's offer for Jeannot, there's just no way. It's not even a debate about the value of draft picks, this is all about market value for a player like Jeannot. Our team is not in the position where we can give up 1st rounders plus additional assets for a bottom 6 role player, yet.

I might have done the McCabe/Lafferty deal, but again, the price was higher for both of them packaged together than I really wanted to pay.

I literally have no interest in the other players. Most of the other guys have serious warts and are pretty overrated by outside fanbases.

So lastly, the Chychrun deal.

This trade seems to be the straw that broke the camels back for a lot of Sabres fans. His price tag wasn't as hefty as I thought it would be. But personally, I was never on board because he just hasn't been able to stay healthy. I don't think Chychrun is going to have better luck with injuries as he ages, especially with the style of game he plays. I could be wrong though, Tanev has been mostly healthy for a little while now after a bunch of early career injuries. But we lived through the Bogo annual memorial injury thread experience and I'm not really interested in going through it again. I'd file the Chychrun situation as one that I'd be really excited about if it happened, but also terrified of the worst case scenario playing out.

If Chychrun turns out to be mostly healthy and an impact player for the Sens, then good on them and I'll happily eat crow with this opinion.

Overall, I'm frustrated that the boys have dropped a couple in a row with the playoffs right there within our grasp. I'm also frustrated that they haven't made a move to give them a push, and there are definite spots they should be looking to fix/change in the bottom 6, bottom 4, and in goal. But if we go out and get a JVR I'll lose my mind. Ideally I'd like to grab a couple of role players, but if the young core doesn't perform, we're not making the playoffs no matter who we add. And right now with Tuch and Dahlin injured, and Power showing his age, that's exactly where we're at.

Cutting payroll, staff and not utilizing cap space to get assets or players in an era where cap is a giant asset.

When did they tell you? Can’t be a serious question.

Kypreos has a Twitter Spaces going on right now.... thats a real cool idea... Wish some better hockey minds were doing that for Deadline Day
