I know people don't like the cross-sports comparison, but we are the Orioles right now. Great system. Stud prospects not on the top roster and really good young roster players who aren't going to be cheap for long. Making strides in terms of wins and losses. But management and ownership cannot just sit around and wait for those guys to get expensive and/or leave. Both teams are in divisions with huge market teams that can outrun and outspend their mistakes. Both teams have razor-thin margins of error. Both teams just sit on their war chests of capital and promise their fanbases of better days ahead.
Life long Oriole fan agrees

What would a Crouse + Schmaltz package look like?

1st + 2nd+VO +???
Looks more like this...

Yep, been saying this for awhile. Need to trade at least one, if not two of the "big 4" in a hockey trade for equivilent dman prospects. At least freaking balance out the pipeline!
Should have just drafted one while he had the chance - but that's a record that was broken a long time ago...

also IE. “Terry is cheap” view. I do not like the Pegula’s at all and sitting around breathing down our staff’s necks. But they stand to make a lot more money if they make the playoffs and get fans fully inside the building again + playoff revenue. Than they do by sticking to their “internal cap” and dealing with the same hot and cold attendance next year.

Can we stop with this fabricated rumor that has no basis in reality?

KA offered up future considerations. Arizona countered with a 4th but Adams is protecting the future so he turned it down. He’s got his eyes set on that 2027 1oa pick and the 2035 cup run.

Since the pandemic he laid off workers, gutted the front office, has maintained nearly the lowest payroll allowed and even before the pandemic he demanded RoR traded for best offer with a deadline on paying his bonus Instead of maximizing return.

the burden of proof on his willingness to spend isn’t on people saying he won’t.

Agree with most of this, but I also think folks overvalue deadline acquisitions FAR more than they overvalue 1st round picks.
The problem here is that people that love draft picks keep acting like people who want trades only want rentals. I think most of the people that want trades, want them to be good upgrades with term, not rentals. And few post I have seen want to drastically overpay for it.

I for one want KA to start moving out the dead wood on this team and replacing them with better players. The deadline is one opportunity to do it. Do I want to move our 1st for a rental? F no. However, we have 4 picks this year that will not see the NHL for 3-5 years if at all, and are 5-7 years from being consistant reliable players for a playoff push. We have 3/4ths of the now core built. We are at an inflection point........and need to inflect.

I see a lot of people basically saying the Sabres shouldn't try too hard to improve the team to make the playoffs this year, because the future. I imagine if you said that in front of Dahlin, Thompson, Skinner, etc, they would probably look at you like you had 3 heads.

I think part of the future involves keeping the current young stars happy too.
The reports around the team when Fitz got claimed was that a lot of the players were bummed out and they had a little slide in the following couple games, so shipping out one of the roster players right now might have a negative effect on the room.

There is that area between making pure rentals and making a smart acquisition to make the team better now and into next season or beyond that can and does exist. They have the ability to acquire help, they've prioritized waiting instead.

These all happened before or during the pandemic.

Laying off staff was awful (agree, part of why I don’t like them) and in hindsight our front office also needed to be gutted was overdue and has now been completely rebuilt so they’re paying exactly what they did before.

None of these things are related to roster salary btw.

Bonino back to the Pens? Interesting. I think they are trying to sneak through the matchup they get, likely against Carolina.

All teams deal with that. If the current locker room isn't mature enough to handle the dealings of their teammates, an often acceptance of the sport/league being a business at the end of the day, then Kevyn hasn't done enough to build a stable room, and this unironically would require movement from him to get more leadership in the room.

This is a thread about the trade deadline. Stop going off on tangents. This is your warning.

It is fascinating what the pens are doing. Oodles of veterans on that squad.

They could squeak through round 1 and they likely know anything can happen when a team gets there. They have done it so much and so often, seems their GM is banking on their experience.
