Trade Deadline Thread (March 3)

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
I was mostly fine with the off-season moves, but I thought Jokiharju was going to be a league average second pair defenseman and Bryson would be a pretty good bottom pair defenseman. That hasn’t really been the case, so circumstances change.

Most of us thought that Bryson would be a fine 3rd pairing LHD and would pair well with Boosh. No one....and I mean no one saw the cliff that Bryson fell off of coming.

There are plenty of periods and some whole games that Joker looks like a fine 2nd pair defenseman. But the other times? Boy howdy does he make some poor choices. If the dude could ever be consistent, he and Power could/should form a nice pair. But I'm losing hope he'll ever find that consistency.

Honestly I think you're a little bit off base here. Many of the posters who are a little aggravated by Adams inaction didn't bitch about the offseason moves. Personally I defended many of Adams moves this offseason and felt most of them were perfectly fine. I'm still aggravated by his inaction thus far to address needs though. Not saying no one did this offseason, some absolutely did.

As the team progressed and the picture came into view of what was needed and what wasn't you hope the GM see's it as well and does something to try an address it. Even if it's putting a band-aid on it until the offseason. I just don't see it happening right now, and I'm questioning whether Adams actually addresses the areas of need in the offseason or if he makes minimal moves like last year.

The team is progressing faster than expected, sometimes you have to adjust your game plan because of that.
Well said. I think one of the other issues that has come into focus is that some young guys and/or younger vets are floundering in their current roles. Not wanting to block them makes sense, but you also have to recognize when they're simply not good enough for the role they're in (Bryson, Clague, Olofsson; close to here with Joker, but in terms of him being a reliable top 4 guy compared to the other 2 D who look like they're AHL only) or are still on their development path (Peterka) and need to be upgraded. And acquiring a middle of the pack 3rd line winger and/or a viable #5 or #6 d-man wouldn't be too horribly costly, and could be enough to push the team into the playoffs. I've watched the Bills pull the "we played well at the end of the season and it'll carry over to next year" card, only to open the season 1-4 and be dead in the water by November, plenty of times. IMO, Adams needs to recognize he's getting potential career years from guys and give them a better shot to get in. Not saying they'd win a playoff round, but *that* experience would be more valuable than "we were close at the end."

I’m not speaking about Crouse specifically. I was referring to the idea a trade would somehow satisfy the fans. There will still be complaining and attacks in the GM even if he makes a trade. The focus will just change.
Yup. Everyone bitched about this off-season. And how it was going to produce a bad team. When the team became good, the goal posts have shifted.

i hate to say it but this subforum has crossed the threshold into becoming a very negative community where our most frequent posters are negative (it’s the friendliest way I can put it). Every thread is just constant negativity. It’s apparently what the majority of posters want, and that’s totally fine. I understand it, buffalo teams both just had long droughts.

But apart from the bills thread maybe, I don’t think I have any interest in visiting any more.
BS. Up until the events of this week, there was very little criticism of Adams because he had done mostly a good job and there was a lot of hope he'd do something useful at D or G, even after not doing it in the summer, or the deadline before. Yes there were some posters in the summer disappointed that we didn't do more to address D and G, myself included, but not because we needed to make the playoffs this year or any unrealistic expectations.

Meanwhile, what are the biggest things holding us back this year and beyond? Still D and G!

With yet another window passed, and it being a window where several pieces that would have helped us moved for reasonable prices, it is perfectly reasonable to criticize and question him for those missed opportunities. If he makes a good trade that addresses D or G, he will get the commensurate amount of credit.

The negativity in this thread has been mostly specific and based in actual circumstances, with a couple of exceptions. We are far from people bitching about everything little thing just for the sake of it and panicking, and those characterizing the opposing arguments that way are just being dismissive of your fellow posters and of reality.

You're right on. The volume and pitch of the lowest-quality criticism is stifling and bordering on pathological. It muddies the legitimate gripes into one big mess.

Would we be allowed to start an optimistic thread where we can only discuss the (many, many) interesting and encouraging things about the team? If so, someone with more tenure start it up and I'll see you there.

Go look at the Granato and Adams threads. Every time this team has hit a 2 or 3 game skid, and sometimes after one bad loss, there have been people complaining about them.

It has been like clockwork.

That thread used to exist, back in the day.

I don't think anyone predicted a bad team. Can you find a single post predicting a bottom 5-10 finish?

I think most of a us predicted a team slightly short of the playoffs. Which is exactly where we're trending.

With actual off season additions that "just short" predication would have improved to "comfortably in the wild card".

Window hasn't passed yet. Trade deadline ends tomorrow at 3 EST.

As a person who was preaching patience and saw most others preaching the same thing for most of the year. I completely disagree that this forum has been a pessimistic black hole for the season.

Most people were having rational calm discussions about the teams future without the need to be a doomer and I don't think most people are doomers now. Some of us are dissatisfied and have voiced our opinions that we think more should have been done. That is not being a doomer or being too negative, it is voicing an opinion on the state of the team. Yes, there are a couple posters who have had a pessimistic view point for a really long time. There are also posters who will defend every decision made until the end of time. The vast majority of posters here reside in the middle.

If you don't like or want to hear other peoples' opinions then why are you on a public forum designed specifically for that type of interaction? Not everyone is going to agree with you. It got too much for me for a time in the middle of the last 10 years there. I didn't complain about what people said, I took a break.

I have to say…it’s really something that what is being called out is having the opinion that they needed to address team needs last offseason on D…when it’s not only STILL ACCURATE but we’re watching other teams do it while we continue to fail at it.

There still aren’t magic pieces coming in the pipeline. They’re still shit from Joker down.

What should be discussed instead is people who were wrong in their assessment in the off-season and the ones who are sticking to it after being proven wrong. Not the ones being proven right.

I'm pretty sure all fan bases in all sports are "crybabies" when their teams don't win Championships. Check out the Eagles board after the Super Bowl, and they've won the thing recently.

There's maybe 1 or 2 posters on here that are legitimately calling for Adams head, the rest of us just want Adams to give our playoff hopes a boost, but if he doesn't, we'll be fine, the pitchforks will stay in the shed. Also, having high expectations isn't a bad thing imo.

The biggest thing holding us back is our forwards' ability to play in their own zone. As soon as that gets fixed, we're a playoff team with zero modifications to the on-ice talent.

Put a top 4 D and a very good goalie into the mix and we could morph into legit contenders...............IF (and only if/when) our forwards put in the necessary work in our own zone.

Ahhh yes. There’s like 6 people in here trying to keep up the consistent positivity but I just KNEW someone would swipe in with not everyone has to agree. LOL.

ANYWAY.

Kevyn has 24 hours. Plenty of help still available.

Fair enough. I'll take your word for it. I honestly don't think I've opened either of those threads in months, if ever. Maybe subconsciously it's because I knew it would just be what you're saying.

Anyways, I am an optimist and consider myself a reasonable man, so I rankle a little bit at being characterized as emotional and unfair as I criticize Adams for what I see as clear failures, even amongst his successes. I recognize that your comments may not have been directed at me, so I will relent.

Better coverage from the forwards would help, sure, but I think you're way underestimating how much the D and G contribute to our ability to keep the other team from scoring. They're called "defensemen" for a reason.

That's exactly where I am as well. I've been reading/lurking these boards since 2003, and whenever those threads are bumped, especially after a loss, I don't even bother opening them.

I am by nature a fairly optimistic person who strays from negativity. My thoughts have always been, why do I want to spend my time speaking negatively about something that is supposed to bring happiness to my life? If I'm feeling angry or frustrated by the team, I just don't pay attention to it for awhile. I don't need to bask in the shortcomings of the organization, or to be around to say "I told you so," or to puff out my chest and post incessantly when things aren't going right just to try and get people to agree with me.

I do understand that everyone uses this board for different reasons, and of course, to each their own, but if I find myself posting in bad faith, it'll be time to close it up.

this isn’t the place to post about posting

To be clear, if you’ve got observations you want to make, pm the mods. This isn’t a site for complaining about people who disagree with you regardless of what positions you hold.

Reimer - washed up. Talbot - not an upgrade. Adams has mishandled the goalie situation and here we are. Only hope I have is a blockbuster for Saros.

I would venture to say that there are more GA from blown coverages or turnovers from forwards than there are from the defense.

Saros has never dealt with an in-season trade before like Reimer and Talbot have. That is a factor and guys that deal with it for the first time, like MAF to Minnesota last season, rarely goes well.

So, there is a sizeable chance that if they trade for Saros now, he does not have the immediate impact that many would hope for. He would certainly be a massive upgrade for 23-24, though.

I think there is plenty of blame to go around.

That is to be expected from the youngest lineup in the league.

Only aspect that Adams has not screwed up is the forward situation in terms of getting skill at that position. Goaltending and Defenseman structure & depth/pipeline he's really screwed up. Unless things change drastically, they are maybe 4-5 years away from actually fielding a cycle of prospects of bringing homegrown talent into the lineup. And that's if they focus on the position at all.

But hey, Adams is taking the patient approach, so that shouldn't be looked at as a negative.
