Flames fan coming in peace. Does buffalo need D? I think Calgary should do a short term retool and I think tanev or hanifin could be decent targets for minimum this yr and next (hanifin for longer). Tanev is better rn and older, but he's still one of the best Defensive D in the league and can babysit anyone. Hanifin has been on calgarys top pair for a while now and is entering he's prime. I think both guys are #2/3s. Top 10 protected 2023 1st + for either guys?

Just about all the usual voices of reason are pissed as well, so, this thread is just a spiral. Need to believe there some thought going into this deadline. But at the moment, I’m just distraught. I don’t see how we make the playoffs. We’ve gotten worse (injuries) while the field around us is loading up. And Kev is sitting around with his f***ing thumb up his ass “checking in” on available players instead of f***ing getting it done.

I don't know if they'd part with a first for an older player when they just let Chychrun go to a division rival because of reticence at moving their first. I'd love Tanev but that M-NTC list of 10 I would bank has Buffalo on it.

Buffalo sports in a nutshell. There are two kinds of people. People angry at how things are going…and people who soon will be.

Was the 1st actually being the deal breaker sourced anywhere? That would be too bad if true. I think hanifin would be a better fit age wise (26, only a yr older than chychrun), but tanev would be a better fit skill wise. Granted I never liked chychrun much anyway, he's more offensively talented and flashier than hanifin but worse defensively, they are similar caliber D imo.

Kevyn tells us every chance he gets that he’s in the middle of all trade conversations.

If true…The only conclusion you can draw from that is that after this is that he’s a terrible GM.

It's the interpolation of his consistent messaging about not jeopardizing their future, mostly expressed by a couple of people who cover the team (current and former beat reporters) in a general sense and then someone who has had some small insider knowledge expressing the variation in the Chychrun deal obtusely as being the Sabres unwilling or unable to beat the Sens first pick this year.

Just saw the Chychrun trade... Not a great start to the day.

How didn't Adams beat that offer? I can only assume it's because he's happy icing AHL level Defencemen every damn game. At least he kept hold of his precious draft picks...

Parayko is still out there - but i have zero hope any more. We better hope that Granato can work miracles with Stillman.

Adams did a nice job getting something for Portillo - but as so often - it seems like one step forward, two steps back.

I'm assuming you want to hold on to Mackenzie Weegar - but he's the guy i'd really give up a lot for...

It's going to be hilarious when Adams drafts whatever defensemen is left at 15th. Reaching on players to draft for need is surely the road-map to success.
He won't do that. He'll pick up a bunch more highly skilled but soft, perimeter forwards with all these picks & think he's doing it right.

Not happening but I'd give up:
2023 1st
2024 1st
Vegas 2023 2nd for a package of both.

No protection :naughty:

Every time I open up anything I see something nhl and return to my pissed off spiral of hate. I used to work his cousin and I had all sorts of signed stuff from his Stanley cup. Had is the key word there. It’s been a bad few hours.

Haven’t been this mad at hockey since the captains left.

What is so aggravating about this situation is that the prospect pool is filled with high end prospects but it's virtually nothing but skilled forwards. If you have a glut at one position and virtually nothing in the other you should be actively looking to use some of your super surplus to fix this. The irony of course is the one trade made was one of the only forward prospects who wasn't a soft skilled guy for a defenseman widely regarded as among the worst in the league. Adams can talk about the long game all he wants but if everything after Dahlin, Power and Cobra is complete garbage it will sink his grand plan faster than the Titanic.

Corey Pronman did the work to show exactly how little you miss the picks and prospects moved at the deadline five years later.

spoiler: stop being a coward Kevyn
Maybe it takes more courage to do less when others are oberreacting

We’re a year away. I say that confidently. The offseason is when they should add big pieces.
Defensemen with term are rarely available. With multiple teams rebuilding this was probably our best shot.
My guess is that we go into next season with UPL-Comrie in net and the same shitty defensemen. We've had extreme injury luck this year except for the short stretch with multiple injuries on d. If we get injuries to key guys early next season it will be over quick.

That's the thing... no guarantee we are in this position next year. Florida went from President Trophy winner to out of playoffs in one year. All it takes is a separated shoulder on Tage or blown out knee by Dahlin and we keep pushing the can down the road.
My biggest fear is KA doing something dumb.. so I'm in fear of a dumb trade and pissed of inaction at same time. KA has lost a lot of trust with me

wgr top excuses this morning why KA did not pull the trigger:

They want another or different player (any left ?)
They want another more defensive Samuellson type player
They are waiting until summer
Power is their Chychrun
Johnson might still be coming
Player may not of wanted to come here
AZ bet the Ottawa picks will be higher than the Sabres

me adding one: The New COO nixed the financials

--------

The remaining TSN Trade Bait list is not pretty

Think we got good value on Portillo. Portillo and Bloom for Stillman and a 3rd is slightly less nauseous than anything isolation. I am frustrated like many, but not surprised. Fits with our penchant for conservative GMs in the time I've followed the team since early 2000s (outlier being Murray of course). How many of us would have thought we'd miss Regier's calculated aggression all these years later...

Hang in there. In the scheme of things we're still in a good position. It's just infuriating that Adams seems to have this blind spot.

I've been the biggest complainer on these forums about improving the D since the first days of Tim Murray neglecting it. I woke up this morning at 6AM, read about the Chychrun deal & I'm in a bad mood all day as a result. But big picture - we're talking about meaningful games in March. It's a step forward compared to the last number of years.

This stuff lately reminds me more of later-stage Golisano Regier than early stage Rigas Regier though. I feel like I've seen and heard everything Adams is doing and am mildly triggered that it's SSDD.
