For Ekholm? Why not? He's more of what we need on defense than Chychrun is, IMO. He's tough, rugged, physical and has a ton of playoff experience. Yeah, that contract may not age well......but I'd think even at the end of it he'll be at worst a serviceable 3rd pair/PK guy.
I’d much rather pay 2 1sts for Chych than Ekholm. Give me the guy 8 years younger with all the same intangibles and more offensively gifted.

Wonder if the Hawks will trade Murphy next, I know he was on some peoples radar earlier in the season. Seems to have recovered well from the concussions which was a concern.

Jersey has the best chance to extend Meier in the league, imo, but it is doubtful he doesn't cost a premium.

They have great center depth, are on the cusp of being a contender, and have multiple Swiss players on their roster.

Buffalo has nothing currently that fits the criteria that would tempt him to sign. Smallest market in the country, high taxes, zero endorsement deal opportunities.

Huge contract overpay would be the likely only reason to sign here, but he can get a huge contract overpay in 2024 with a massive cap jump and a desperate ufa market.

His last contract negotiations with Wilson got him that poison pill contract. Negotiations with his agent will be difficult with the QO as the elephant in the room.

You are very adamant that he would have re-signed in Buffalo. What support do you have that the rest of us aren't seeing?
Oh this is so f***ing exhausting. It's been laid out before.. why are we even discussing this when it's not even a possibility anymore.

All that loser mentality spiel was said for ROR when we traded for him. "Oh no .. he was really difficult with contracts in Colorado"

Do I really have to sell you on what this team can become? I guarantee you teams/players look at this team and see success in the future.

He came from California..I doubt our taxes are going to scare him off.

He can have his own cheese at Yancy's Fancy .. Meier's Mozzarella Cheese.

Money does not seem to be his primary objective.

You sell the potential of the team..who he gets to play with. You sell the lockerroom and the attitudes of the players and coaches.. The culture that the front office has built. You sell the community.

Timo Meier isn't Panarin or Kane or any of the other I need to play in the big market snobs. ... Meier played his entire career in the shadows in San Jose .. Buffalo is a bigger hockey market than San Jose.

There is absolutely no reason to think he would not re-sign here unless you are stuck on that loser mentality still

Aside from that fact that everything also works out for TBL could someone explain how these teams are getting better long term?
Long term? They're probably not getting better (I mean, anything is technically possible).

These are short term upgrades in an attempt to win now. Either GMs feeling the heat to finally get out of the first round (see: Toronto) or others looking at an aging expensive roster that is against the cap and knowing they (the GMs) won't still be around for the rebuild so might as well spend now.

lafferty is a decent bottom 6

but Mccabe suddenly being better than in buffalo is laughable. He will become Toronto whipping boy.
Difference is he won't have top-pairing responsibilities and matchups in Toronto.

At 2M on your third pairing, I think McCabe is a good piece.

I question giving up that value for 3rd pairing guys, but it is the price contenders tend to pay to plug holes that they think gets them over the hump.

It will not take 2 firsts for Ekholm if they are not retaining, which we do not need them to do. It would take 3.5 years of retention to get into a pair of 1st's. So maybe a cap strapped team would do it. Rumor earlier in the year was 2x2nds or equivilents.

That was Ted Murray in a nutshell. He wasn't afraid of overpaying and getting players he targeted. Unfortunately he might have been a decent scout at one time. almost every move he made turned out to be a detriment. Cause he didn't acquire players. He acquired parts that didn't fit or pan out.
I think he just traded for drinking buddies: Kane, Bogo, Lehner, ROR...

How about Adams gets creative and takes a cap dump for some trade ammunition

This is what I suggested in a Chychrun trade. How about taking on an arizona cap dump? Or from somewhere else, to help sweeten a deal? Sabres should have the room as long as it's an expiring contract. (Maybe even someone like an Okposo caliber but has 1 year left?)

Are there any potential sneaky good low cost rentals on D out there? Something like a 2nd or later draft pick for a bottom pair D or 2? It may not be a help the team in the future move but it is also staying away from the high cost rentals game we absolutely do not need to be in, and maybe shows the team and the fans that ending the streak and making the playoffs this year is an attainable and worthwhile goal. I'd sell a 2nd to have a better shot at getting in this year. 1st or player/prospect trades only for longer than rental help.

I'm like Missouri now: show me. Stop telling me. Enough letters. Words are wind, etc.

Valimaki would have been a nice player to trade for cheap before he was waived.

Same intangibles???
Chychrun has played 9 playoff games. Ekholm has played in 70some and played in a Stanley Cup Final.

I can understand not wanting to pay 2 1sts for Ekholm.....but Chychrun definitely does NOT have the same intangibles. Not close.

I like the lay low strategy and see if you can snipe something cheap near the end. The Atlantic teams have damn near shot their bolt.

Tampa, Boston, Florida, and Toronto have a combined 3 1st and 4 2nds over the next 3 years. Carolina has as many decent picks as those 4 teams.
