I think the rumors suggesting Carolina being the frontrunner for Guentzel make sense. Lack of goal scoring has hurt them in the playoffs in the past; they aren't a team to pay up for rentals but eventually you have to take your shot, this may be their time.

It's been there biggest problem. They don't go for it.

I agree, we have other needs with our limited cap space anyhow and he only provides value on a bargin contract. It looks clear he isn’t interested in a discount and may find it hard to get paid this summer (huge luck on his part with the cap increase however).

Maybe they will run off together and we will get an update on how Dubas cleaned out Conroys bank account and left in the middle of the night, but somehow nothing of value remained.
Nah Dubas leaves him because his bank account is already empty

Just imagine, you have a team that's 2nd in the league (2021). They are just kicking all sorts of ass, but you know they need to add.....

And their move at the trade deadline? Acquiring Cedric Paquette.

They went nuts in 2020 acquiring Skjei, Vatanen and Trocheck. Probably their best deadline in recent memory as Skjei and Trocheck were decent additions.

No different than saying they were exploring trading Pettersson then a few days later he signs an 8 year extension. It's just the way of the business.
I just don't think it matters if he wants to re-sign here. he hasn't looked like a good fit and doesn't seem to have much chemistry with anyone. Barring a drastic change in play, I wouldn't sign him for more than $4-5MM on a one year prove it deal. the idea he is/was asking for max term at $8-9MM is comical. If they can flip him without a major add for Guentzel, or for pick/prospects they can use elsewhere, I'm all for it. If they can't, then that's fine too....maybe he turns it around down the stretch. I think that trade was as much about jettisoning Kuzmenko than anything else. It's pretty hilarious how quickly a year or two of additional term can go from being an asset (Buchnevich) to a massive liability if the player isn't playing well (Boeser last summer). Kuzmenko's value (at a $5.5MM cap hit) was probably (-) a first or second round pick or similar prospect.

Yup. They've been pretty good with asset management but at some point you need to go for it or you're going to lose out to a team that is going for it.

I do agree that building a consistent program that contends every year is the correct method but there needs to be a balance.

Slept on it, with Vegas and Colorado making significant progress yesterday, maybe I would prefer we move Lindholm for players that we can retain. Let’s say Vegas gets Guentzel, than maybe we trade Lindholm to NYR, they are apparently looking for a Center (still). For a KK, Schneider or Lafreniere or some equivalent to Carolina or Boston. They need to be able to be added to the line up, Necas would be a different example.
they got Wennberg

Carolina will land Guentzel, they have a buttload of prospects they can move.

I would rather flip a few assets for Toffoli or Zucker, then sign Kessel for free and add an extra body.

With Skjei the Canes also had the benefit of the Marleau trade first rounder from Toronto for nothing more than cap room. So they were willing to add someone with term.

Don’t recall them moving a first before the tdl in any of the other years since they became a good team.

Only way I have any interest in Zucker is if we're dumping Mikheyev on them. I just don't see what he offers even for a third. He's absolutely not a top six and once Joshua's back, we have the third line locked. So... fourth line?

at this point, would pivot away from Guentzel, price will be too high.

dump Lindholm on Boston. target Toffoli, who has chemistry with Petey in the past.

get a couple big bodies who can hit and play on the 4th line.

try to add a D to bump Myers down

I am at the point, where I kind of want to see Guentzel stay with Pittsburgh. Just a complete disaster in managing it from Dubas.. and other western teams can’t get him.

Depends on the priorities of each teams d owner. Some are risk averse in that they don’t want to go multiple years of a bad team and have attendance plummet.
To keep a good consistent team have to be able to draft and develop replacements for the guys that move on.

Carolina, Pesce this year and Slavin next season are due up at around age 30-31. Carolina historically not inclined to give the retirement contract and sign someone til they are 36/37. Aho was 27 when his deal was up so his runs til 35.

He's better than Suter and Mikhayev currently. They both are useless right now and it adds depth.
Mikhayev they can just buy out later use him as a rental depth winger

Tofu would be a nice addition
