Vegas’ first rounder in 2025 is … crap.

Hanifin is an absolutely outstanding player.
I know he is but the complaining about what the market returned is crap too right?

The thing is that Calgary got burned that off season with Johnny hockey and Tkachuk and they don't want to get burned again, if better actual offers were out there Calgary would have taken one of them right?

We bought early and it looks like this year the bargains are coming in late.

It's to Conroy's credit he's looking out for the team long-term instead of managing towards job security.

Thought Seravelli summed it up well:

He was going to get a first for Hanifin but why allow it to potentially get pushed out to 2026 draft? I get the 2024 draft is t viewed as a great draft but should have just kept the 2025 as is and not risk pushing that back.

I mean in that case, why not a 2028 1st? Or 2029 1st? Tell you what, how about just an IOU, we’re good for it!

It's the next available year and if Calgary gets the 26 one chances are it's a higher pick as Vegas is 2 years older right?
Conroy had one of the premier trade pieces for this deadline and he basically let Vegas decide the terms. It’s hilarious.
The markets decides the market not HF Board trade scenarios, Hanifin had a small list and Calgary had to sell and it looks like a bargain bin day for the most part today.

I just don't understand the outrage Calgary didn't leave a better offer on the table out there right?

2024 is not considered a great draft. Already have vans first in 2024. I get wanting 2025 to spread it out. Just the condition that LV could trade it and push it to 2026 is just odd.

It is odd but obviously Vegas might use it somewhere else so they asked for and got it.

My issue is with Calgary giving Vegas the option to decide, Calgary should be the one calling the shots here.

Why did Hanifin have a small list? He only held an 8 team no trade clause.

I don't believe this is the year to go all in. This year is to sign EP and get exp. See how Dallas has Johnson and Stank compliment their top 6, that could be Willander and Lekk and even a more mature Pod in 2 years. Now with EP signed, there is no gun pointing to our head to "win now or else".

The window is the next few years.

Calgary obviously didn't mind so thus my question why is everyone so upset?

Because it's not like the other 24 teams were all in on trading for him in reality?

Obvious non playoff teams wouldn't be trading for a rental, nor would teams needing a center be looking for a Dman if they felt comfortable with their back end.

The 8 team list this late really means that in practice only a handful of teams were in a realistic position to be in on Hanifin.

Vegas' first in 25 or 26 might end up being a decent pick given aging curves. But I also think Conroy is probably helping other teams beat Edmonton.

We lack speed badly though up front, hes fast and can put up points, not great defensively but I assume thats why he wouldnt cost much. I do agree you dont spend much for him though and he should not cost alot.

Whatever speed Mikheyev had is missing after his injury.

If it’s like a 3rd and a C prospect I’m good with that

It’s an absolutely terrible return for a player of his caliber, full stop.

It would be more accurate to have Lindholm on that list than Mikheyev given TOI/GP, but the real problem is you have Mikheyev, Garland and Lindholm jointly making basically $15M AAV and playing like third-liners. Add Boeser, who has largely been salary-inefficient after the first ~30 games, and you have a top-six problem. Hoglander has been a net positive given his salary and production in average minutes played.

Toffoli is interesting

The way he was handled was peak Jim Benning
Plays well in the playoffs, has good chemistry with Pettersson, most people assume we re-sign him. considering what we gave up for him.

Benning Proceeds to NEVER even make a contract offer to Toffoli, and he signs a relatively cheap deal, that is EASILY manageable.
Benning turns around signs Virtanen, let’s stecher walk, trades for Schmidt, let’s Tanev walk, and signs a substantially worse player in Tanner pearson 4 months later for absolutely no frigan reason

Toffoli fit so well when he was here. I would pay for him but not as a rental.

I'm ok trading Podkolzin, I think in terms of value it's as high as it's going to get. I think the Canucks gave up hope that he becomes a top 6 forward (what he was originally drafted for).

So bye bye Podkolzin. Make sense if Silov is part of the package as I think the Canucks are moving forward with that Topiloko dude.
