Speculation: Trade Deadline Talk - March 8th, 2024

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. Patches makes no sense, even at 35, he always felt the need to be a chef and we need cooks on the 4th-line… Adding Patches means scratching Cousins or Lomberg and losing Lorentz or Gadjovich for free… Not how we operate !

Patches isn’t a need anymore, if he ever was, so he won’t be a target.

Apparently, Flames ownership told management that they can't trade Markstrom because... they think they need him for a playoff run now? What?

He has a couple more years on his contract, so maybe they just want to wait until the offseason for a better deal

Yeah, the thing I would be worried about right now with Ekblad is giving him massive term. He is fine right now, top-pairing RD aren't exactly falling off trees at the moment, not to mention the RD tax.

Then again, if we can make a good hockey trade for a younger top-4 RD, you might have to consider it.

I would be fine keeping him for roughly the same cap-hit or even a bit less if it can be swung.

It's a difficult situation. We can give him term to lower the AAV, but then we have a player signed long term who won't age well. On the flip side, I think there's risk associated with letting him go. As has been already pointed out in this thread - top pair RHD don't grow on trees. If we are in "win now" mode, then I lean toward the idea of giving Aaron term and just dealing with the aftereffects of that later down the road..... hopefully after a championship...
