Speculation: Trade Deadline Talk - March 8th, 2024

Speak to me about the potential defensemen... Just if you continue with that non-sense, you're gonna be really disappointed... Billy is banking on stability and team-chemistry, putting Cousins/Lomberg in the pressbox won't do anything good for that.

That's the reason why Pacioretty is a no-no. 100%.

He will probably be a good addition to a contender for a low-price, like you said.

If Cousins is playing poorly, he would deserve to be scratched. That does no harm to the locker room. And this is coming from a guy who has preached about the importance of building a strong culture here for several seasons and how that was holding us back. You can always use mor scoring depth. Having stability and team chemistry doesn't mean you give your starters a pass for poor play. That's all I'm advocating. He's depth. We will need it for the playoffs.

We got Tarasenko for a bag of pucks which fills the one need I think our team was looking for. And we only lost Lockwood out of it to waivers.

I’m not very interested in moving roster players or valuable assets for a rental, especially one who doesn’t fill a need and frankly doesn’t seem like a good fit.

I'm not advocating blowing our load. I'm saying if Patches only costs a 3rd or 4th, do it.

Patches would get games with us down the stretch. It would also allow us to rest starters. He wouldn't be unfamiliar with our systems. He's 35, he's not dead. Yes, I think a professional with his pedigree could handle that.

Seamlessly, of course not, but neither would Lorentz or Samo. He pretty much came out cold this year in Was and played alright, which is what you'd expect from a guy you'd trade a 4/5th round pick for.

Disagreeing with you isn't trolling, but crying for mods is absolute gold.
 
Got to think Montour is the guy out. No way we can keep him and Reinhart I think.

Only way around it is if Tarasenko looks great and we choose to keep Montour over Reino...

I don't expect Ekblad to be part of this team after the summer. Therefore, Montour stays. Zito won't be able to replace two top4 RDs via trades or off-season signings with the assets available to Zito.

I think Monty, Reino and Carter will take discounts after the Fors contract, so they can stay on the team. And I think Ek knows he’s got to look well south of $5M for his next renewal. Zito can fit them all in. Or one of them may walk if tempted by bigger money. Also, maybe OEL will somehow find a way to stay.

Zito has the Barkov/Tkachuk anchors at one end of the scale that make sure none of our guys are getting ridiculous $11M+ contracts, and he has the Forsling in the high middle to stabilize it all. Zito is doing his part of making sure we have a legit challenger for a while.

The thing that worries me with Ekblad is the term. If he wants 8 years, you know the last 3 will most likely be bad, and you worry about years 4-5 as well. It'd be great if he was willing to sign a shorter contract, but IDK why he'd do that unless he decides same as Forsling that he really wants to be here.
 
I’m not worried about retaining Reinhart, or Montour. It’s a good place to live, the team is winning, they pay only federal tax rate - I’m honestly unsure of what else they could possibly want? They’ll get paid a fair rate. If they want the extra 2 mil a year, they’re entitled to go seek it. Will it make them happy, improve their lifestyle? Will they retain their current mojo and level of play in a different environment? Or do they think life is good and want to keep it rolling?

You hope everyone comes to the table level-headed and recognizing this is all working well right now for everyone. Just my .02.

And I think that’s exactly what was weighed in the Forsling extension.

Well, that’s a good point. I mean, everyone knows, or should know, that Zito and Maurice are just puppets of HF posters, who have obviously made all the best trade and lineup decisions to propel this team to victory!

(Maybe I need to add: :sarcasm:)
